The game play is somewhat straight forward, but there are a lot of different things you have to manage. You think you're doing good, then next thing yo uknow a group of alpha beavers start eating your tree and a few pirates drop in to raid your base killing some of your colonists. It is a fun game, but you may lose track of time if you really get into it. There will also be lots of death until you get more experience. So, don't get too attached to those colonists or any tamed animals you pick up along the way.
