Fracking Universe is a must-have mod in the workshop

Otherwise, the game is just kinda fine.

If you're a fan of rewarding exploration, this game is pretty good.

The game isn't paced well.

For this genre, I think the slow push through the eggs is tedious: Push forward, kill the spawn. Push forward, Kill the spawn.

The builds are significantly more limited than advertised.

Idk, its not super fun compared to vampire survivors, DRG survivors, and even some aspects of Soulstone Survivors.

I like the aesthetics. I like the concept. It just feels a little empty and not well thought-out.

Quite fun! A nice change of pace from your typical factory-like game.

The most recent update fixed literally every bug that I was running into so I have no complaints.

If you like logistical problem solving, silly physics, base-building, and cartoony graphics... well this game might just be for you.

Hell... if you'd rather farm, you can. Make some soup while you're at it.

or Smelt so many chunks of iron ore into a single bar that you should theoretically have a black hole instead of an Iron ingot. Make that ingot into a dagger. Sell it to a Jeweler and be rich. Don't ask what the jeweler needs the dagger for...

My negative review:
So far, there isn't a lot here. You can farm, but there isn't much of a reason to.
You can fight, but there isn't much of a reason to.
You can talk to people, but there personalities can be summed up in one word.

This game is going to require major reworks with the systems. Item usage, in-game things to buy and reasons to buy them, make your characters have character and give the player some choice in the conversations. The way the game is, now, you can't fail. There are no wrong choices. There are no consequences. At first it was relaxing, but my word is it dull.
The parts with the most effort are the art, sound, and the overarching story. Everything else is a shallow experience.

My original positive review:

The biggest win for me is that they compromised with people and made it 40 dollars with a promise of 2 content editions for 60. 60 seemed like a lot for the base game and I did say that this would be a guaranteed purchase from me if it were 40 or lower because I love this style of game.

But the gameplay... its so smooth and intuitive. I love how everything feels. its impressive.

If you like stardew valley, harvest moon, really any of these rpg farming sims, then this is absolutely a great game to get.

4 hours in I've yet to see a bug, but the freedom of movement did get me stuck exactly once. (which wasn't a problem because they have a very forgiving unstuck system that just plops you on the last place that counted as a path)

Very feel good casual playstyle - the end of the day isn't a punishment that takes something from you if you don't get home in time.

If I had to nitpick, I'd ask that we have a way to pet and brush our tiny floofs at the same time without having to walk away and walk back to have the options reappear. Maybe letting the pickaxe special target a spot on the ground by holding F allowing us to hit more optimal spots.

Thats really all. Like even animals getting between you and watering has a fix with the animal lure. These devs thought of almost every tiny annoyance and provided a way to avoid it.

Its like vampire survivors in gameplay style with its own unique twist.

If you like that kind of game, you'll like this one. This is more challenging than vampire survivors which I can appreciate.

The color usage can make differentiating friend from foe difficult at first, but you get mostly used to it after a few hours. Options to outline enemies doesn't do much to help that.

Either way, I'd give it a solid 7/10. Fun and arcade-y

Fantastic story. It really hits close to home for me as I was bullied relentlessly in middle school. It felt like no one would ever stick up for me. Close friends didn't help or mention it. Teachers ignored it and pretended like they cared but never actually helped. I ran into the guidance councilor's office crying once... just to have her kick me out and tell me to get back to class...

I'm almost 30, now, and I have a tough shell... I confront things head on and I don't take anything from anyone... Push before they push you... Its not a good way to be.

... If you see bullying happening... please help stop it... doing nothing leaves scars that won't heal on their own.

As for the game, itself:

Great stealth mechanics, movement is fluid, controls are intuitive (though space for crouch is an odd choice, but you get used to it).

A great survival horror game that had me panicking at times, but not so scary that it was hard to push forward.

o.o ...but those manikins are pure nightmare fuel...

you jump in, you're met with little instruction for what gives relevant gear for you current power level, only your actual level. So if you're max level, but have T3 gear, you're still pointed at bosses that will wipe the floor with you.

Then you get bombarded with the pay-to-win crap at the nexus, a battle pass, and all of that monetization crap. The game is a ♥♥♥♥ show of the worst of free-to-play games and it didn't used to be like that.

The difficulty isn't that bad, but why bother spending the time when others are just buying their way to quick decent gear to jump into higher content.

If you like this kind of game, then enjoy it... but it certainly isn't for me.

The most detailed game I've ever played and I love dwarven aesthetics enough to take the time to learn it.

I never played the original, but I've played this and its been a blast, albeit frustrating at times when there is an issue with some process and not enough indication as to what the issue is... like doctors not doing surgery. That took about 2 hours of googling to figure out.

If you don't have the patience for a learning curve so steep its like climbing a cliff face upside down, then you won't enjoy this game. Its not mindless. it takes a deep level of focus and curiosity to learn what uses what materials or why one job isn't being performed, what goes into making an office an office (it can be a chair in a single block room, by the way)

I've done fortresses without save scumming just to see how it plays out
I've done fortresses with save scumming to see if a dwarf could be saved from his doom
I've done fortresses with enemies enabled to see what attacks me
I've done fortresses with enemies disabled in remote locations to try and learn how to achieve stability and have a generally happy population

You can put yourself into this world's history (literally a mode for reading about the history of your autogenerated world) and when your fortress inevitably falls to some unknown terror or accidental FUN then you can abandon in to its fate and create another fortress inside the same world and keep going.

Does this game have issues? Yeah. All games have issues
the most pressing for new players are:
- inadequate explanations to processes and mechanics
- inadequate action cancel explanations

I'd probably have given up if the wiki wasn't there to rescue me. But thanks to it, I've been able to keep trying and now I'd call myself a proficient Dwarf Fortress player. A far cry from legendary, but all dwarves get there eventually if we keep trying.

Strike the earth and have fun!
