Early Access Review
I didn't mind when I heard that KSP 2 would be coming out in early access since the first game was amazing well before its full release.

What I do mind is that this game isn't early access because there are unfinished features (which there are plenty), but because it's literally impossible to play.

It seems I can't do anything without something going horribly wrong, and this is coming from someone with nearly 400 hours in the first game.

Here's just some of the game-breaking bugs that I've encountered:

  • I can't un-dock without seeing "mission terminated" (craft does not explode, it is perfectly fine - tried while paused as well). Nothing that I did seemed to prevent this throughout even through several quick-loads, etc. This was especially disappointing after lag-filled, buggy slog to the Mun.

  • Quick-loading in the Mun's orbit (and maybe in other places, didn't waste my time) sends the craft spinning out of control. It even sent my engine hurtling off my rocket.

  • My orbital trajectory often completely disappeared with seemingly no chance of recovering it.

Performance is another issue, although for me it's more understandable than the bugs (what I originally expected from Early Access). I'm averaging ~15 fps at 1440p on low settings at the launchpad and in Kerbin orbit (even with extremely low part counts) with a 2060 super and a Ryzen 7 3800xt.

Despite the bugs, there are several improvements over KSP 1:
  • Building ships is significantly better in KSP 2 (even though I can't use them)
  • Tons of new information displayed in the UI
  • Delta V estimates in VAB
  • Part coloring
  • No more root part troubles

Unfortunately these benefits are far outweighed due to the bugs that render the game unplayable.

This disappointment is accompanied by the many features that KSP 2 is missing from the first game:
  • cannot view fuel content of tanks in orbit (maybe a bug, could not see fuel amount even in part manager)
  • no resource mining
  • no campaign or science mode
  • no trajectory shown when focusing on a planet that a craft is intercepting (again, not sure if a bug, but I can't even tell at this point - it's that bad)

I would recommend to stay far away from this game for a long time since, for a game that was announced in 2019, it still has fewer features and significantly more bugs than the original game. Go and mod KSP 1 since it brings it far ahead of KSP 2 without the bugs and the high price tag - mods even surpass the graphics (one of the few improvements) of the new game.
