Game is really good. A bit difficult, but I think that's good here. Finding / building a chaotic wand and seeing what happens has been a blast!

The gameplay was fun, but the real draw of this game is the characters. I found myself getting misty-eyed at the end of the game even for characters I didn't think I would like. If you like other Supergiant games, definitely give this a shot.

I was hesitant about buying this game, but I absolutely should not have been. This has been far and away one of the best platformers I've played in a long, long time. It's tough, but worth it. Charming cast, cool secrets, and I haven't heard myself say "That's so cool!" this much at a game in a while. If you like platformers, DEFINITELY give this a shot, you won't regret it.

Great atmosphere, tight controls, and fun abilities made this one of the most enjoyable single-player experiences I've had in years.

Owlboy is ok. I spent the first ~3 hours playing offline, so my playtime does not reflect the fact that I have completed the game.

The pixel art is obviously incredible, and gives many characters most of their likability. The soundtrack is enjoyable, though not as memorable as some other games.

I have a few larger complaints and a few more nitpicky ones, but let's start with the big things first.

During my playthrough, I felt like I spent about half of my time in dialogue or cutscenes, instead of actually playing the game. While there's an open world, there's only one "main" town, and even then you only visit it intermittently, and it doesn't get that "home base" feeling. There are no shops in town, and the NPCs have relatively little dialogue (~2 dialogue interactions per instance). The NPCs you carry with you have more character, but everyone else just felt flat, with each character having their singular Trait. Additionally, despite having this large open world, there is veeeeery little to do outside of the main storyline, which leads to a lot of useless open space with maybe some enemies thrown in, and almost no reason to return to places with your new partners outside of the lackluster coin collection. Even when you do collect the coins, they are only usable in one "shop" - mostly to achieve health powerups. The cannon minigame was fun, though.

As far as gameplay goes, of the three NPCs you partner with, only two get more than ~2 hours of gameplay, and the last partner only has his gimmick / power used for one level. Enemies or platforms will occasionally come out of nowhere from across a screen transition, and, while the game is by no means difficult, these sort of "surprise!" deaths sometimes felt cheap and led to me having to repeat sections that were otherwise very easy. Boss fights are very often just groups of normal enemies, and have little character. Levels feel largely the same, and more often felt like they were driven more by gimmicks than tied together by a central mechanic.


These nitpicks don't ruin the game, but still felt like they made the game less enjoyable than it could have been. There are several stealth areas, which honestly do not feel like they fit the game very well. The game does not teach you some of its mechanics, and discovering them on your own without any signaling can be tiresome - the direction you are facing affects whether or not you are able to spin the "screw" platforms, for instance. Not every object that you're able to "screw" with your spin move looks the same, and sometimes are not visually distinct from the rest of the level. The controls are passable, but not great, and cycling through your partners while also trying to dodge around in a fight can be a chore. This is especially when you waste the cooldown on the shotgun thinking you had a different partner out. It's not game-ruining, but it can be bothersome. The same can be said about the lack of a map system.

Overall Owlboy is definitely not *bad*, but it feels like it could have been so much more. If I could give the game an in-between score I would, but really I didn't feel impressed by any of the game's level design, mechanics, or story. Geddy is great though.

Everyone should spend at least some time learning a fighting game, they teach you more about yourself than any other genre out there; Street Fighter IMO is the best at this. It knows what it wants to do and it does it well.

It's quite short, but really charming. Probably the best argument for games-as-art that I've experienced lately, and boy is it an experience.
