Literally my only issue is that they took away the Quake 1 air strafing and it's enough to make me not want to play the game. I don't care if you can go fast with the sword, all you do is press a button and then it goes fast.

The air mobility is what made Quake 1 combat feel smooth and when you used the mobility as means to traverse around the levels fast, that's what felt truly satisfying and rewarding. Speed gained by pressing a button is boring. Please bring air strafing back!

EDIT 12/19/2019: Ok, they added air strafing. Game is literal perfection now, go get it.

Is this some fixed up version that I bought? Because I havent come across any issues that this game infamously has. Maybe the friendly AI can still surprise though, haven't got quite that far yet.

Game is reasonably challenging, you run out of ammo easily, but only if you don't explore. Strafe jumping is possible, so it should be a good game for speedrunning as well.

Story is a bit cringeworthy, but nothing more or less you'd expect from it's era. So far I like it on par with Quake 1 and 2 single player and I feel like every time I complete a level, I become a tiny bit more Romero's b*tch.

It may have not been the best game ever (as advertised), but it sure as hell beats a f*ck ton of other commercial games even released today imo.

Used to play the web version of this and played 2.0 too when it was on free weekend a while ago. One thing hasn't changed, the playerbase is still childish and unaware of anything. I have yet to lose a 1on1 game even once and half of the time I got called a hacker. Skill level is overally weak which makes the experience lacking for me. If you're an experienced aFPS/FPS player looking for a challenge, this is not your game.

Pros:
+ Variety of video/rendering settings
+ Good visibility between players and maps (optional)
+ Alt button for the jump fire mode = more coherent read of the end game accuracy
+ Client-side hit detection = ping advantage goes both ways.
+ For simplistic theme the visuals are alright.

Cons:
- No server browser (tosses you into random game)
- Awkward screen stretch for lower resolutions, no support for 640x480 >:( !
- Soundworld is weak and uninformative
- Mouse input feels unnatural and wonky
- Map layouts are borderline random with little to no regard for gameplay
- Unity (lol) engine

It only took me 2 minutes in the tutorial map and I was already digging this more than TF2. Fortress Forever is a source port of the original Team Fortress mod for Quake released somewhere in the 90's. You could say it's a rip off, but then again it's made by the same community which probably made your experience joyful in the original game as well. If your d*ck goes hard for two of the following things: TF2 and bunnyhopping, Fortress Forever is a private self-cleaning ejaculation purse for you. There's a fine line between easy and difficult movement. It's relatively easy to bunnyhop, but combining that with rocket jumps and conc-jumps with ramps and slopes makes it a fascinating combination of possible routes and scenarios.

If you're used to modern games, the weapon balance might come as some shock as the weapons in general don't deal as much damage as you'd expect them to. That is because when you're playing as a scout for instance, your objective is emphasized on flag running and swift maneuvers instead of spontaneous fragging sprees on where ever you could reach faster than a Heavyguy could for instance. When you decide to take on a gun fight, it wont be as simple as twitching your mouse over and sometimes hitting a lucky headshot. No, this game grabs you from the nuts and forces you to put some effort to it. Skill and practice is rewarded, unintentional advantages is not.

The bottom line is, none of the oldschool weapon/movement gimmicks or exploits are gone, instead they're cherished and encouraged by the community all the way from the tutorial to those bored f*cks who spend hours teaching new players new tricks and routes. Speaking of tutoring.. There seems to be a variety of flag capture mod types which I'm still quite not used to, there's not really any user friendly implications to what mod you're currently playing, which is my only complaint so far, but that'll pass soon due time I'm pretty sure.. Oh and last time I tried sniper class was broken, or the server had disabled the class. IDK, no implication to that either and I'm not sure whether it's the game's or server admin's fault.

In any case, if you hate hats and how casual TF2 is, then grab a free copy of this and come catch my flag wigging scout butt in game. If there's shortage of players in the area you're playing, join Quakenet #ff.pickup and get involved with the flutter neckbeards.

It's so much like Metroid that I was convinced the entirety of my play through that I was playing a genuine NES/SNES Metroid. I'd go as far as say it's even better than Metroid. It has a clever way of copying stuff from Metroid while keeping the dynamics new and fresh. For example, instead of morph balling through narrow cracks, you drive a remote drone and later on in the game you get an ability to teleport where your drone is. This allows you to navigate to places that the drone couldnt reach, inside areas where you could not get in without the drone in the first place.. If you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ know how Metroids play like at all, you know what I'm talking about. Just play it damnit and enjoy the eerie music.

If only we could wiggle and spin in air in real life like how we can in Reflex, I'm sure all of humanity would have significant improvement in their sex lives. Anyone into Quake series, competitive and challenging FPS shooters will definitely want to keep their eyes on this. Reflex is currently on pre-alpha preview with a handful of bugs and few obvious user friendly elements missing, but the core mechanics are there and it already feels better than most of the commercial games in today's stock. The game in alpha state is only 8 eur or 10 usd, purchase includes all future builds and releases as well. The goals and efforts the developers put into the making and planning of this makes that feel almost like stealing!

You can run around alone in a map offline and easily get caught up with the smoothness and responsive input. The rewarding feel from learning new trickjumps and mechanics can't get any better than this. When a multiplayer game is fun to play just by yourself, then something is definitely done right. Netcode is still work in progress so don't except much from online games at this point, it's playable up to 50 ping though. Also, if you've ever wanted to make maps for Quake and never quite figured out those complicated editors back in the day, this is like minecraft in comparison. If I don't see this as next highlight in esports scenes or competitive gaming in general in the couple following years then there's something horribly wrong with the society.

As a die hard Quake fan and a skeptic towards numerous of arena shooter revival attempts, this one is spot on real deal! I highly recommend it. If you don't have the money for it then hit me up and I'll buy it for everyone in your entire lineage.
