Fallout New Vegas is the best of both worlds.

Fallout 1 and 2 has great storytelling and is generous in roleplaying options. But the isometric turn-based gameplay is very dated and not for everyone.

Fallout 3 and 4 bring Fallout to the 3D world with more quick combat with optional VATS but easier gameplay that anyone can get invested in. But the storytelling can break older lore and these games can be surprisingly linear and restrictive when it comes to roleplaying options.

Fallout New Vegas picks up on the combat in Fallout 3 and improves it by actually letting you aim accurately and having more diverse combat options. The writing team in Obsidian also made speech options and a story arguably just as good as the original games. You get the gameplay Bethesda games are known for, and you get the storytelling that the Interplay games are known for.
