Base game good, mods however make it great. The game engine has limitations that mean the game can never be entirely "realistic" and mods that claim to add realism often tend to make it less so or interfere with basic game mechanics. And at the end of the day this is a game as much as it is a "simulator" tho it is possible to play it the way you want - as realistically as practicable or as absurdly unrealistic as mods allow.

There are also limitations to the engine - rain coming through roofs, corn plants clipping through vehicles and trailers and so on. On the whole though the quirks are not enough to get in the way of you being able to enjoy the game. While some may prefer to spend their time contemplating how realistic the tyre compression is on the tractors, I'm more interested in making a profit.

The only note of caution I would raise is that the difficulty setting will greatly impact your game play experience. On easy the game is very forgiving when it comes to crop prices, on normal you need to think about what you're doing but will still be able to make money at a reasonable rate and on hard the prices are much lower and make for a tough play through if you aren't experienced at the game. Additionally the difficulty setting is tied with other game settings such as fertilisation states, whether ploughing is needed or not and the growth rate of crops; decisions about these settings will either add difficulty or reduce it. An argument can even be made that with ploughing being far less common nowadays in some parts of the world that having it turned off is more realistic for some people.

I am by no means an elitist so I play on normal so as to actually progress in the game at a reasonable rate rather than scraping out a living with a grimace on my face. If you ARE a masochist, by all means go with hard difficulty, slow growth rate, ploughing on, 3 stage fertilisation and high fuel usage. Let the realism flow.

At any rate, highly recommended and in my humble opinion still worth it in 2024.

... and unless you have the patience of a saint I'd highly recommend one mod if you use no others - ANIMAL TABLE MANNERS. You can thank me later.

Bought and paid for this DLC but it no longer works for FS17 (for me anyway). Reports as an error in the log caused by incorrect mod description ID. Worth noting that the latest patch for FS17 is not the latest patch number listed by Steam and that many of the mods formerly for FS17 are also now updating to FS19 mod ID codes and causing load errors in the log. Manually readjusting them to FS17 codes unbreaks them. As the paid DLC is locked and cannot be edited, I can't fix the problem and see no value in taking this up with Giants or Steam. Just money down the drain at this point. Buyer beware.

As many others have already stated, this is essentially a CKII Beta. Those familiar with that game will at least be able to understand the basics here, albeit that many of the systems and features of CKII are either missing or incomplete. As a test bed for CKII there's some interest here for the die hard Paradox fan, but from my thankfully brief experience of this title, I would advise you to go play it instead.

If you're here for the Sengoku Jidai period in Japanese history, then I would recommend Shogun 2 TW or Nobunaga's Ambition. I'm rather partial to Shogun 2 myself.

In its current state, Sengoku is effectively an unfinished game that lacks polish and content. As such it can be tedious to play at best, downright frustrating at worst.

However. if you're looking for a Daimyo death simulator, then look no further. This is the game for you. No sooner will you get a new clan leader than he'll be dead. You could argue that life expectancy in those days was pretty bad, which is true, but this is a game, a strategy game at that. Having the character you are playing constantly dying on you gets a little tedious after a while.

EDIT: NOV 2023 - DO NOT BUY!!!! Ubisoft are planning to kill the online content to this game in early 2024 - this will break the only good thing about the game - the Dynasty system. Without the online connection, all the extra content will no longer be available apparently. Unless a patch is applied to allow it to be accessed locally, the game is in effect DEAD, Ubisoft are trash tier publishers.

WARNING: Steam lists this as being for Windows XP and up, but that is no longer accurate!

One of my all time favourite games - one I have played extensively and would love to continue playing. However the DRM for this game requires you to use Ubisoft's proprietary game launcher which no longer supports legacy OS (in my case I'm still more than happy running Windows 7). I was forced to use a 3rd party website to obtain an old version of Connect and by trial and error find a version that still worked (133-1-10715) with Win 7 AND would let me log in to the servers without throwing errors. Errors are caused by newer versions of the Connect launcher looking for Win 10 files and not finding them on older OS.

The game itself is great fun - if you can actually gain access to the game you paid for and own legally. Sigh. All Ubisoft needs to do is remove the bloody DRM from the older games and just let Steam or GOG etc handle it.

Posting this review on day of release (here in NZ anyway). Overall a good addition to the game, but with one game breaking mechanic I'm afraid. The old Waaagh! mechanic was never any good and certainly needed to be addressed - CA for the most part has done a good job with that, but they've introduced what might possibly be the most annoying gameplay feature I've encountered thus far.

As the Greenskins, you work towards building enough reputation to trigger a Waaagh! No problem, let's go! Doomstacks incoming, let's smash something... Trigger the Waaagh! Oh wait, I've just lost most of my movement points - and couldn't even chase down a legless sloth... and that's for 20 turns. Be prepared to be trolled massively by the AI as they run around trashing your frontline settlements while you wallow around feebly trying to intercept them. Might not be so bad if CA would address the punitive unit upkeep costs to the player to allow us to field more armies. Bwahahaha! Pigs might fly too, right?

As it stands, this "feature" of the DLC is at best infuriating, at worst, a poor attempt to balance the power of the Waaagh! (which is unintentionally driving me bonkers - thank you so much CA). As Grom, trying to deal with Clan Mors during a Waaagh! with trashed movement points is utterly awful. They can hit me at will, I can't hit much of anything... Worse, even if you do manage to fend off enemy raids and go on the attack you still have to travel to get to their settlements, and the nerfed movement range of your Waaagh! encumbered armies makes that much more of a chore - even march stance will only help a little and of course leave you vulnerable to enemy attack. Sigh.

I find the logic of this rather poor to boot. The units in the Waaagh! are the same as those in my army - if my regular army can move a certain distance in a turn, then why not the Waaagh! forces as well? I may - or may not - have yelled at my screen more than once about this. My PC did not answer back, nor give any reason for such a bloody annoying mechanic.

I would also note that when playing as Yvresse, the need to manually fight battles that are overwhelmingly in your favour just so you can be sure of capturing a prisoner is somewhat - tedious. Some more thought on auto resolve settings here from CA would have been welcome - seems a smidge trollish forcing the player to fight minor battles to ensure capture of minor enemy lords, some of which still won't end up in your dungeon and may or may not give supplies. At least this game feature has diminishing returns later in the game and can perhaps be less annoying as time goes by in campaign as at some point Yvresse will be fully restored.

CONCLUSION: 7/10 - Reluctantly giving it a thumbs up on balance of all content but with a cautionary note regarding two somewhat... annoying design / balance choices from CA. In particular, the Waaagh! redesign to me has proven bitter sweet as I waste turn after turn bogged down by the movement penalties that come with it. 20 turns of Waaagh! may seem a lot, but when you're chasing your tail for most it, it can't end soon enough. Bah humbug!

Was looking forward to this game, but very disappointed to discover glitching shadows that only get worse the more you speed up the game. Tried to ignore it, but unable to. In light of Giants' response to those noting this glitch on their forms as "it's just the way it is, sorry" I have requested a refund from Steam. VERY unhappy to have to post this.

Last entry from the Diary of Gary the Zombie Deckhand:
Dear Diary,
I regret that it has been a while since I last entered anything here within. Since our ship was wrecked off the coast of the Star Tower, things haven't gone so well. I find myself most mortified to report that I am now a Zombie Deckand (NOT a dickhand, despite what some people say!) in the employ of a markedly peculiar vampire pirate by the name of Luthor Harkon. Apart from a constant craving for BRAINS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was doing rather well and finding the Zombie Pirate life quite the lark. Well, apart from the odd appendage falling off here and there, and a bad case of crotch itch. I'm getting a bit mouldy.
But alas, just as our Cap'n was starting to make a mark in the world, that elven fellow up north, oh what's his name now? Tony? Ted? Tyrion maybe? BRAINS!!!!!!!!!!!! declared war on us - I have no idea why - we're nowhere near him. And then those awful lizards did the same thing... There's a rumour going around the Zombie Dickhands - sorry, deckhands - that something called "AI Diplomacy" was to blame, or perhaps one of the elder gods didn't want us having any fun.
As a Zombie, I don't really care much as long as I get me grog, and me BRAINS!!!!!!!!!! but our cap'n be mighty pissed by all accounts.
Had best go, our cap'n be chewing on the carpet again and I don't want to be around when he stops. I hear we're maybe going to do something called rage quitting but I'm not sure. I had such high hopes for my new career as a zombie pirate, but we ain't seeing much sea action what with having to fight multiple wars on land. It's almost as if we weren't meant to have any fun at all.
BRAINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

EDITED 10/11/18: All joking aside, was looking forward to this DLC and pre-release lets plays seemed to suggest AI Diplomacy may have been fixed as wasn't seeing much in the way of trolling war declarations from distant enemies. However, both my starts as Luthor Harkon thus far have had this happen and of course not too long into the campaign Tyrion is already a monster power house and my single army stack can't be everywhere.

Elves to the North of Me, Lizards to the West and here I am stuck in the middle with you - well, me myself and I to be exact...

I get the feeling the malice penalties are such that you're never going to be able to rest easy.

Further gameplay suggests that while you will probably be declared on and that establishing Pirate Coves may make this more likely as you seek out richest ports, it appears manageable more or less, or at least it will be for some Vampire Coast LLs, most likely Harkon and Noctilus due to being a safe distance away from Tyrion etc.

The new Search Ruins mechanic of puzzles is challenging and far better than the old system, although sometimes no less annoying. Digging for Treasure mechanic I found to be a bit hit and miss and although heros are supposed to be able to do so as well as Lords, this seems a bit buggy to me and have found myself being asked to travel a LONG way to get to some of the locations. On the fence about that.

Pirate Coves can have many applications, from making you a lot of money, to earning you Infamy or spreading vampiric corruption - the latter can be of as much benefit to other Vampire Coast LLs as it is to you - especially when applied liberally around Ulthuan if you are playing as Luthor Harkon for example - make your money from the high income ports, and spread corruption in the rest to help weaken the High Elves for Noctilus and Aranessa for example. Be aware that if a settlement is razed, you of course lose your cove and that there's a 10 turn +100% cost modifier applied after you establish one just to try and stop you steam rolling.

I have not encountered any bugs / crashes at all.

Ultimately, the DLC is pretty good and fun to play BUT(!) you will need to be a bit more careful about how you do things, and Tall rather than Wide is doable but a bit hard to maintain late game if not supported by Coves and a lot of battles etc. I'd highly recommend establishing as many Non-Agression pacts as you can on tuirn 1 and keep at it - it's vital given the state of Aversion malice modifiers given to the AI - I was jumped on by Clan Pestilens and Lizardmen within 3 turns first time as Luthor simply because I didn't make nice with Skrolk. Even Noctilus jumped on the bandwagon.

Of note also are the starting locations and their stated difficulty. I'd say that as Noctilus or Aranessa you are going to have a more interesting time of it in some ways if you choose to take on the High Elves - Tyrion will bring you pain, sooner or later. Whereas Luthor starts within easy reach of viable land targets and expansion possibilities - the stated mailce between he and the Lizardmen is a problem, but then it's no more or less of a danger than envoking the ire of the High Elves or Tomb Kings etc. Cylostra Direfin's start location is indeed tricker still as she will attract the ire of the Dark Elves if she chooses to unite her starting provence and has to contend with Chaos corruption in her starting region from turn 1 - although expansion against the New World colonies to the south is then going to catch a certain Slann Mage's attention, sooner or later.

Growth is key here for your LL's ship, and while it's tempting to go for all the bright, shiney new toys, if you don't shore up growth of your ship, you're going to suffer - the buffs that this ship gives in combat are important, and in the long run you'll get them faster if you start with growth and go from there. I highly recommend the second addition to your ship should be the artillery building chain as it gives you in-battle artilley support similar to the Black Ark abilities and can be a great help, as indeed is getting mortars early on.

CONCLUSION: 7/10

Note: Changed from a thumbs down to thumbs up after more extensive play and getting a slightly calmer perspective on mechanics, although AI Diplomacy is still a bit annoying - the "Aversion" malice against you, while good in theory, is a bit tiresome when applied far and wide.

Like many others reviewing this DLC, I really did enjoy the base game - there was a steady progression in difficulty but never any real trolling of the player. However, as much as I'd like to give this DLC a thumbs up, I can't. The thumbs up / down system on Steam is idiotic of course - most games are a mix of good and bad and a rare few are truly 10/10 or 0/10.

In the case of this DLC, it's a 5//10 at best for several reasons. Only three missions, and little to no interesting additions. The worst aspect however, is that right from the start of the first mission you're facing wave after wave of enemies with zero dungeon development. In other words, you start from scratch as in the first missions of the base game, but are facing two open entrances to your dungeion and over powered hero stacks from level start.

The design of these missions all but eliminates any fun from the game and allows for more or less only one play style - balls to the wall or forget it. Turtles need not apply - and even hares might want to think twice. While I'm sure some will relish the challenge, I'm not sure simply overwhelming the player from the start of the first mission is a challenge as much as it is poorly thought out level design. I enjoy a challenge, but I don't much care to be trolled, and this feels like a troll at times. Very little humour to be found when Talya dies defending the dungeon for what feels like the hundreth time.

It might be fair to say the base game campaign was a little on the easy side, but I think the game designers have gone too far the other way with this DLC. It doesn't really allow for differing play styles and for me personally it pretty much destroyed a lot of what makes the game fun - base building. You're too busy fighting for your life from the start to enjoy much of anything...
