Star Conflict could be described as "CoD in space". That is a very basic statement, and most certainly needs some extra details, so here is my review on Star Conflict:


Star Conflict is a F2P Multiplayer dogfighting game. The gameplay could be compared to games like CoD&Crysis 3, but it does have a bit more to it than you would imagine.

But before delving into the game itself, let's talk a bit about the performance; it runs butter smoothly on max settings with my, above average, rig (i5 [email protected] + R9 290x). I have seen many, MANY games that run far worse and don't look nearly as great.

now as that is out of the way, we can start to talk about the mechanics in general.
You have your basic progression in new ships (~50 ships, even though their prices do go up very quickly, which we will discuss later). In addition to that, every ship has a couple slots for weapon and abilities. Each of them can be changed (note: I have yet to be able to change a weapon yet, so keep that in mind) and upgraded. There is some confusion about it, as it seems that you have to jump between afctions if you want thing like railgun rank 3, and did not select the correct faction for it.

The gameplay feels really polished. Movement feels smooth, and you'll get the hang of the controls very quickly, thanks to the great tutorial they provide. The tutorial is short enough that it doesn't get boring, but explains everything that you may not know.

But now, the ugly discussion; "How is the business model?" (AKA. Is it P2W?) (note this is how it was 13/10/2014)
The short answer is "it is okay, but get's progressively worse when you progress in the game".
While your income/match will grow as you level, the growth is just too minimal compared to the way ship costs go up. 1-60k-180k-270k, while your income will grow more like 18k-20k-23k-26k-28k..., which means progression get's much, much slower after the first hour or two.
Meanwhile, the real money price barely changes, making it more and more tempting to throw a bunch of dollars at the devs. So, at the beginning the game is completely fair (so fair that it wouldn't make sense for the developer to keep updating the game), and in the end game it will (likely, note that I have 3h on record, and IO am assuming the P2W-ratio will keep growing as it has) be very P2W (so unfair that it wouldn't make sense for the player to keep playing)
The game has a premium mebership program, but it is rather expensive compared to it's benefits (50% faster progression). (and yes, the progression get's so bad speeding it up by 50% doesn't cut it)

This is a big problem, and could be fixed with changes to the business model, but as it is, you will likely be having GREAT
time for, depending on your patience, 8-16h, and if you are really a fan of dogfighting, maybe even 40-50h, as the gameplay is truly solid.

The conclusion:

It most likely is worth a download, and you will get some fun out of it, for sure. It has a great AAA-level polish to it, and if you are a VR user, the VR support may very well be a good reason for you to keep playing much longer (the explosion effects seem to have been almost made for VR).
If there is something I could add, it would be a power to pay 29,90€ and get a revamped ship costs (and costs in general), so that the cost goes up much slower. (also making all premium currency transactions to have an option to pay 100x (sounds like a lot, but it isn't) in regular game cash), making it to be kinda "P2P-upgrade". With such I could easily rate this game to last 200-300h, but as it is, I just can't see that happening.
I will give "yes" as my recomendation, but with very heavy reservations. That being said: give it a try!
