Hank's love for propane is the perfect allegory to show his deep unfaultering loyalty as well as a physical manifestation of who he is. Hanks devotion to propane runs deep. It has provided his lifestyle for the past twenty years, not just financially, but it has warmed his home, gave him hot showers, and cooked nearly all of his food during that time. He sees charcoal as the anti-propane, below even butane. To use charcoal is not only an affront to propane, but also to Hank. To who he is as a person. To all that he has become because of propane (and to a lesser extent propane accessories). To not only use charcoal, but to tell Hank that it is BETTER tells Hank that his life's work and his life has been a sham. It tells him he is worthless. It tells him everything his father has been telling him his whole life.
