Take the best parts of Donnie Darko and Butterfly Effect together, add astounding depth by letting the audience interact with events, and give it writing that excels in both tightness and heart: that's Life is Strange.

The story is brilliant on too many levels to list in this short review, especially without spoiling. You will watch your actions shape a unique path for the setting, and somehow, at the same time, nothing you see will be superfluous; everything serves a narrative and artistic purpose. And that purpose is to coalesce into a hard-hitting, beautiful journey.

Gameplay needs to be praised more than it is. I expected a walking sim/glorified point and click. There are brief parts that feel like shoehorned-in PnC puzzles, but aside from these moments, Max's developing ability to manipulate time is used to great gameplay effect. This ability interacts in interesting ways with how puzzles are structured, how you can interact with the world, and even how the player gets to make choices. All of this creates a unique gaming experience not found in a normal PnC.

The main weak point of the game is visual. Although there are some beautiful scenes, and the cinematography is, broadly speaking, very well done, there are serious issues with lip syncing that you will have to learn to ignore, and motion capture is wonky at times. As well, the minimalist style is occasionally to the game's detriment, as images that should be impactful wind up being more confusing. I was able very quickly to adapt to all of this, and it barely affected my experience of the game, especially since sound design and music do so much to make up for this.

I'll end this review in one of those cliches that becomes so because it's true: the first episode is free, so if you're at all unconvinced, go download it and decide for yourself.

Pros:
-Gay magic daughter
-Can make Geralt wear a skirt and ponytail
-Diverse cast includes powerful and interesting women
-A drag queen elf
-Protagonist performs a surprisingly sensitive and emotional manhood
-Gwent
-Unimportant, but worth saying gameplay and setting are the best I've seen in a fantasy game ever

Cons:
-Needed a mod to put the skirt on Geralt without playing suboptimally
-Levelling is annoying and clashes with open world until you find the mod that fixes it
-Takes up all my time
-The drag queen elf is somehow not the main character??

I bet you've heard this game is bad. When you heard that it was probably true, but it's come a long way.

Do you want to play Skyrim with a more interesting story, more people, and *actually engaging gameplay*? You need to play this. Honestly, it holds up even without the MMO features, and succeeds as an MMO too.

Most importantly, I need to recommend the Orsinium DLC. They brought in an outside writing team, and they knocked it out of the park. I am a huge fantasy nerd, and eat up fantasy fiction like hotcakes, and Orsinium is some of the best fantasy writing I've ever seen. The orcs are portrayed in a deep, dynamic way, not only in the main story, but in every single hidden gem of a side quest. If Orsinium was a standalone game with Skyrim's inferior gameplay, you'd have heard of it, and it would be one of Bethesda's top titles. Tragically, it was crafted to try to save their dying, underappreciated MMO, and so lacks the exposure it deserves.

Really disappointing game. Most of the puzzles are more nonsense than abstract, the game's aesthetics are let down by its graphics, and the overall structure demotivates the player. Perhaps it deserves some praise for its ambition, but as it did not come close to reaching this ambition, we should be honest and say it's just not a good game.

Go play The Witness instead. The Witness succeeds everywhere Antichamber tries and fails, and in other places it doesn't even try.

Bastion embodies everything that the phrase "beauty in gaming" can mean.

The narration is unparalleled. The soundtrack is among the greats. You can judge the art style for yourself.

Where Bastion really shines is the way it tells the story. You are always involved directly in the scenery of ruined Caelondia, and uncover more about the riveting Calamity in interesting ways throughout. Toward the end, once the game is done trying to impress you with raw gameplay, it will try to surprise you with a more involved, challenging story than it initially presents itself as having. 75% of the game is scene-setting, and this scene-setting is used well by the last 25%. There are many truly memorable, emotional moments in this game, and although the sound design and fun are the easiest takeaways, nothing really affects one like these moments.

Gameplay is tight, interesting, and dynamic. I'm not a fan of this sort of beat-em-up generally, but Bastion is slick enough to keep this kind of gameplay fun and interesting. It never feels unfair (unless you take on challenges voluntarily), and never gets boring. Absent the things that make Bastion really shine, it would still be a decent game, worth playing.

I am extremely grateful to Rucks for continuing to keep me company when I play Dota. His calming Caelondia drawl keeps me from flaming.

Braid deserves its status as the paragon of art games.

One of the greatest strengths of gaming as an artistic medium is the capacity developers have to tell story through interactive gameplay elements. Sadly, to this day, only a handful of games have realized this capacity, and few do so as brilliantly as Braid. One of Braid's greatest triumphs is the way that it draws in a certain kind of person to be particularly compelled by the game throughout its run, and then uses the last level and epilogue to teach a profound and important lesson which is invaluable particularly to that kind of person. I am that kind of person, and I am grateful for reminders like Braid of a lesson which really deserves to be played through to experience.

As for gameplay: I hate platformers. The genre feels lazy and repetitive to me. Braid is neither of these things, and in fact barely feels like a platformer. The real gameplay is not in the platforming but in the puzzles, and the puzzles you encounter in this game are of a unique sort you'd never encounter elsewhere. Anyone who likes a good head-scratching owes it to themselves to play this game, whether you love or hate Mario.

I found this game enjoyable to play, and if you're on the fence, I don't want to be the one to push you against it. However, if there are other walking sims/story games you're interested it, it's not improbable that your money is better spent on them.

Far and away the best part of the game is the opening sequence. The poignance of this sequence carries you through to the more interesting character development in the middle, but then, for the later parts of the game, they try to get you to the end with a lacklustre mystery that cheapens the earlier sections. At all points the game shows serious heart, and the characters are extremely compelling and well-acted, but this is not enough to carry the game. The writers fell short of placing their characters in an interesting scenario, which is tragic because with a better story this game would have been brilliant.

I have nothing against walking sims, and the scenery is nice, but it's still a fact that gameplay is not a redeeming factor.

If you like character studies that are all character and no study, the colour orange, and good acting, play this game. I'm serious, there's nothing wrong with liking these things. If you want to actually play a good game, look elsewhere.

Dark, atmospheric, novel, intriguing, and fun. Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice makes effective use of the proven technique of taking simple, intuitive gameplay and throwing the most challenging curveballs it can find in that simple system at the player. Casual players will not be overwhelmed, and hardcore players will not be bored.

The story is beyond heartbreaking. It is breathtaking, and frankly, showed me truths that nobody else was willing to tell me. Themes of love, mental illness, and perseverence are explored here in ways I've never seen, and this exploration is nothing but successful. Story is not thrust in your face, and doesn't slow down the game—the keywords here are subtlety and density.

Aesthetically the game is challenging, but rewarding. You will want to turn away from the screen, you will have moments where you have to stop and cool down, and like the protagonist, if you push through these moments, you will be given nothing but more of that special kind of hardship that is somehow its own reward. While much of the scenery is breathtaking, and Senua's character design shows unrivalled excellence, these high points are present mostly to make the lows feel lower. You will hurt.

Gameplay is somewhat unique, but nothing to write home about. You've probably heard about the way the voices help you in puzzles and combat in lieu of a HUD or even reliable senses, but beyond this Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice plays like a slightly clunkier, more brutal Arkham game. The puzzles and exploration shine above the combat, though the combat is not out of place, and worthwhile on its own.

(I played the whole game through, mostly without internet connection, so it didn't log my hours. This is not a 0.9 hour game)

This game has left a really lasting influence on me.

The best way to describe this game is "tight." The gameplay is tight. The soundtrack is tight. The overall feel of the game is totally TIGHT.

Gameplay and story aren't anything truly special, but if you're into structuralist art games, this will be right up your alley. The ways Pony Island pushes player interaction and medium as material in gaming are novel even among structuralist games. This game is the right length, giving itself space to explore all of its good ideas without overstaying its welcome.

If you're just looking for an arcade game or a storybook you may be disappointed... but I'd encourage you to take this opportunity to try something different anyway.
