Gunslinger is one of the best western style games that I've played in quite some time. The game perfectly catches the flavor and the atmosphere of the old west without it coming off too forced or too contrived.

The atmosphere and the sound are spot on for the game. The graphics look very good with the skyboxes creating great settings. The gunplay felt natural and the differing weapons had their own value in terms of speed, accuracy, and function. This is the kind of game that doesn't need a dozen weapons and did great with the selection it does give you. The method the game uses to tell the story was also very well done. I personally loved the on going narration as things happened or would go back and be gone over again as a correction.

But there are some downsides. One of the repeating issues I've found with Gunslinger was the ambush scenarios that it kept throwing the protagonist into. You had these open arenas with guys shooting at you from every ledge and sometimes you would die to fast to understand where and how many of the differing points of dangers there were. In addition, the bosses with the shotguns had a serious clipping problem with walking through terrain that the player has to navigate around. While one is just a gameplay issue the other is a bug that makes those kinds of boss fights much more difficult than they should be. Lastly the special items that were scattered on the boards in some cases, were too out of the way for a casual player to locate. This is a shooting game first and not every level rewards exploration and punishes you for straying too far off the path by resetting to your last checkpoint.

Overall, Gunslinger is a great game if you can get it at a cheap buy. It is satisfying to play through and those who like games that ramp up difficulty will have lots of fun with the New Game+ and the True Western difficulty mode.

Spec Ops: The Line, was a breath of fresh air in the FPS genre for me. The interactive terrain was enjoyable and the use of it could have a dramatic impact on how many of the firefights turned out. The Suicide Mode was suitably hard and challenging - and the game play mechancs were smooth and made the game fluid and fun to play.

The biggest pro of the game is the story. It is an enjoyable story with elements that many FPS games don't touch on and this was the best part about the game in my opinion. When you hit the end of the game, those final moments, it really makes you reflect on what you did earlier in the game and wonder - did I make that choice? I also enjoyed the fact that there was no best weapon that could be picked up and used the rest of the game. That different weapons and your own stock of ammunition, called and sometime required switching up. I think the toughest choice I had to make was do I keep the AR that I had finally fully loaded with extra ammo - or swap to the much needed RPG to take out hardened targets? These choices matter.

Lastly, another big pro is the AI teammates you have aren't stupid. Their kills matter and they will kill things. It was great to see that.

The biggest con I had of the game was that even on max settings it was still sometimes hard to spot enemies in medium range locations. And there was some wall clipping that AI bullets seemed to do that were inexplicable. This could be because of terrain design with the levels. But it happened enough that it caused me moments of intense frustration.

Overall, I'd recommend Spec Ops: The Line as a cheap buy and a great game for a play through.

I picked up this game on a discount and I'm quite happy with the purchase. The gameplay really takes me back to the Mandate of Heaven days and filled me with quite a bit of nostalgia.

The pros of the game are that it is very like old Might and Magic with wonderous places to go and fun dungeons to explore. The music is good, the gameplay is good, and I found the game to keep me interested through to the end.

The cons of the game is that the developers have abandoned it after one DLC. I also discovered that the DLC purchase I made for the game on Steam didn't apply once you moved to UPlay where you are required to launch the game from. I still had to spend UPlay points to unlock my DLC.

But at less than five bucks the game was worth a play. Buy it on deep discount and you won't be disappointed.

Tomb Raider has been a game that I've enjoyed for decades before this new reboot came out. And I will say that I am impressed. It was a fun game with an enjoyable storyline that really lead us up to believing that the Lara we started with and ended with had a very natural progression into what we would know her as. Ubisoft could learn a lot with this for their Far Cry games to be honest.

All the of the Tomb Raider mechanics for platforming and movement were present and the game location was not only atmospheric but lent well to the use of the mechanics, supporting their need instead of being some kind of out of place justification for them.

Now the cons. The gun combat in the game is pretty terrible. While it has a lot of common FPS elements it also tries to poorly integrate a melee combat system with a bad movement/dodge mechanic that at times can get you hung up on walls or doesn't quite dodge in the way you intend to go. The cover mechanic is neat at first but when you realize that autofire weapons are still grazing you - it becomes deterimental to gameplay since Lara takes only a handful of hits before the screen goes black and white and you die.

The other con is the myriads of quick time events used to get through the game. Some of them are interesting and fun to play through, but the combat versions of them are tedious and should have been left to unique movement and fighting through the gimped combat system instead of trying to forcefeed you more poor melee mechanics.

So all in all I would recommend the game for a one-time playthrough for the story. I wouldn't recommend going back for anything else.

I regret that I did not get this game quite some time ago. It's an addictive fun roguelike that's the fantasy counterpark to The Pit. It's got a wider variety of options though and the RPG elements add a very distinctive feel to the game. The sound track is very good. The game is easy to get the basics of and learning what each options in character selection can do has been a blast.

A good pickup for anyone's library.

Evoland is a smart and intelligently designed game that really showcases some of the historical development of games since the 1980s. I found it to be an enjoyable playthrough that lasted just the right amount of time and didn't overstay its welcome. Every area was designed very well with the accompanying music of the area to fit - and the changes are reflected in a manner that is sometimes subtle.

It really does make me appreciate the rise in retro gaming and the release of old time favorites like Final Fantasy and a host of others.

Come for the history, stay for the game. It's short and fun.

Valkyria Chronicles is not a game that I would usually buy for myself. It was gifted to me when a friend recommend that I give it a try. I will say from the outset I was skeptical but the gameplay is fun. The story is conventional but entertaining, and the premise is rather enjoyable.

The pros of the game is that it's easy to play through a quick mission or two and then put the game down for awhile. You don't have to have a lot of time investment and you can save between episodes. The episodes are a unique feature that's part of the game engine and the watercolor graphics make the game a real joy to watch played out. The music is great and the dialogue barely grazes camp, and tries to treat the material somewhat seriously.

The cons of the game is it isn't as customizable as advertised. As you level up the unit types they unlock random abilities but you do not get to choose which. In addition there seems to be no point to leveling the units except to unlock those random abilities - and not all of them are beneficial. In addition, it is hard to quantify weapon and tank upgrades. How they impact the damage you deal out and receive. The only variety between characters within a single unit type are their personal backstories which sometimes influences the kind of abilities they have.

Lastly, while neither a pro nor con, the missions themselves are based on a graded system that seems to punish the player for defensive play. Within the first ten missions, on more than four of them the only way to earn an A rank would be to do a scout rush to the final objective with such tight command point limitations you can lose the whole attempt with poor accuracy when shooting down vital targets. This could be considered the challenge of the game, but most combat episodes have a 20 turn limit. This would not be an issue if the money and experience you received to level troops and buy upgrades were not tied to this grading system. A second play of the game I ran with my tandem A ranked game, found the classes and the upgrades considerably lagging behind because of a lack of exp or money.

This game is a fun little time waster that can be played casually in about 3 hours. Add in the searching for items and collection you probably get another hourish or so out of it. The story is pretty cut and paste but enjoyable for the way the game plays. Collecting the achievements towards the end, the mushrooms in particular, was difficult because of their lack of distinction from the map pallet colors. Still a fun short game. Sadly not replayable.

Saints Row 2 is a good story wrapped in a flawed clunky game. Gun combat is not too bad but melee/brawling combat is ridiculous with poor hit detection, clunky mechanics, and bad control design; all of which comes from it being a poorly done port from the console to the PC.

As a story I think the writing is well done. The acting is pretty decent. Animation and graphics aren't the best but they are suitable. And the sound selection isn't bad for the era the game came out in. Overall the game is worthwhile if you can get past the horrid mechanics.

For me if this game wasn't free with another game purchase I wouldn't even waste the value of it in the Steam store. There are better GTA-likes out there with far less problems in terms of mechanical gameplay.

I came to this game late and people lauded it for its gameplay, graphics, and story. I found the graphics to be great and the gameplay is pretty enjoyable. But after about 5 hours it gets highly repetitive and the game drags on. To quote a friend, it overstays its welcome. Skip the collectables in the game and just push through the story.
