The game may not connect with everyone in the same way, but those that it connects with will be reminded of the fun they had back in the day playing Smash Bros with their friends. The roster size more closely resembles the roster of 64 rather than Melee, but at the time of writing this review, there have been three new characters added to the game at no additional cost. The three new characters are: Shredder, Garfield and Jenny XJ9, with two more characters scheduled for later into 2022. The combat leans sharply into Melee rather than any of the other Smash games, with most characters being playable, only two of the characters being considered the worst in the game.

Almost everything this game does, Valheim or some other game in this genre does better. The only area this game excels in, is graphics and audio. Icarus is an example of developers polishing up surface level features such as graphics, sound and UI, while ignoring the possible questions like "is this game fun?" “How rewarding should gameplay be?”

Speaking of fun, let's talk about something that isn't, the XP tree. The XP tree the developers use makes the game artificially slow, forcing you to grind out generic missions to earn two XP per level. I am not sure if these missions were procedurally generated, but after playing a few of the starting ones, my only guess is that they are and that makes them feel forgettable, especially when compared to games with amazing first levels or how games in the same genre of Icarus can give you a feeling of endless possibilities. Meanwhile, my first thoughts in Icarus were “Is it really going to take this long for me to beat these slow missions to even more slowly unlock the knowledge to craft basic items.

Lastly, my biggest regret is putting 2.8 hours into the game, not allowing me to return the game.
