An absolute must-play for all dwarfcels.

Every time I booted up Valheim, the ol' grumbler in me would mutter, "Aye, this is fine, but I’d rather be a stout dwarf, deep in the belly of a mountain, diggin’ for precious ores and gleamin’ gemstones". And whenever I'd fire up Deep Rock Galactic, I'd sometimes chew over blowing up the drop pod, setting up a beachhead in Hoxxes, and charting a course through the stygian dark in search of the legendary lost dwarf Karl.

Well, RtM is that video game. You get to settle ancient grudges and reclaim the most famous dwarfen lost hold, all the while swinging your mighty pickaxe, singing a medley of mining songs and getting absolutely smashed on first-rate dwarfen brew.

Best way to experience this is to not look anything up. I repeat, do not look anything up. You are an expedition stumbling around in the great unknown, either alone or with your clansdwarfs. Embrace this fully, and rejoice when you accidentally discover a new crafting recipe for the khuzdûl forge or uncover a path that had remained lost for weeks.

If you are not a filthy elf and enjoy dwarf titles, give RtM a shot. If you are still unconvinced, go to my steam profile and click on the featured video: Durin's Lamp Song (minor lore spoiler).

May your hammer strikes reawaken the forge fires of Khazad-dûm, and the flickering candle on your mining helm light the way to the mighty treasure hoard hidden away in Durin's halls.

Darksiders II is a bloated tedious mess of a game, both from the perspective of combat and lvl design/puzzles. The sheer amount of repetitive puzzles in the midgame really wore me down and the pacing is all over the place. The overall art direction in terms of the protagonist, the environment, npcs and bosses is superb and yet the gameplay and level design make me want to retch. The devs had the right idea when you briefly visit Earth and mow down infinite zombies with a heaven-forged repeating arbalest - need more of that. If you are curious about the story, it's decent but I highly recommend watching a youtube lets-play over touching this junkware.

Perfect introduction to tabletop wargaming. SOVL has simplified mechanics and army lists and allows new fans of tabletop to quickly grasp the basics behind various movement and combat phases. The roguelike campaign is also worth checking out.

This free game makes me want to paint up some miniatures and start my own tabletop army.

No Rest for the Wicked is a unique ARPG with souls-like combat system, challenging platforming that opens up myriad exploration routes in a compelling game world and resource gathering reminiscent of survival titles. While the game is still in EA, the devs are very active and are dropping performance patches very regularly. This is a great game to become involved in from the outset and I plan to play a lot more.

The one thing this game is missing is the dwarf race. Devs, please let me play as a Cerim Dwarf.

A real dwarf would never serve filthy gobbos.

Still, super fun with friends, 9/10 with a few bugs.

This one is a stone-cold classic and may have been one of my first played RPGs. My brother and I sunk hundreds of hours into this game as kids. Decades later, Dungeon Siege still holds up as a model RPG with surprisingly great UX design and story. The soundtracks are top-notch that I remembered very clearly from all those years ago - games seldom carry such memorable tracks anymore. 7/10 - it crashes frequently (there might be a patch fix online) but still is a nostalgic title worth the replay. If you have never delved into Dungeon Siege, prepare yourself for an epic journey through Ehb, the kingdom of stars.

Wyrmsun is everything I wanted out of Warcraft II. The dwarf clans are really well fleshed out and the random naming system for buildings and heroes shows how much the devs have researched into dwarf lore. There are units that reference warhammer, and workshops can make artifacts like dwarf fortress. The scenarios and quests, albeit short, are fairly interesting stories. And the cherry on top, this is all completely free - 10/10.

No gruff dwarf voice or dwarf voice in general for BG3's character creation.

For a game that took this long in early access and has some of the most groundbreakingly immersive crpg features, this lack of voice options is clear shortsightedness from Larian that warrants grudgment. Especially since theiir earlier divinity titles had plenty of voice options.

I will hold this review as negative until I stop sounding like an obnoxious human noble or a bloody adventuring pompous elf brat every time I interact with anything for the whole playthrough.

Fix your game Larian.

The first time I heard of Dwarf Fortress, I couldn't grasp how a dated ASCII format video game could tell such notoriously legendary stories. Frankly, I imagined it was all blatant embellishment by DF aficionados to glorify their niche game. After some preliminary research, I downloaded the game from the Bay 12 Games website to find out what all the fuss was about.

After witnessing the glory of DF firsthand, I desperately wanted to build a magnificent mountain fortress with a great story. However, every attempt at playing the game was frustrating. I did not bemoan the lack of good UX but simply my own all-too-human limitations of reading CP437 characters and navigating solely with a keyboard.

But I wouldn't be thwarted so easily. I spent the next decade reading up all the DF sagas on the Bay 12 forums, from the zany accounts of players trying to rule Boatmurdered to Captain Daneken's impossible duel against the fire demon Ashmalice in the ravaged Hamlet of Tyranny. If I couldn't play the dam game, I would live the experience vicariously through the accounts of more intrepid gamers who had fearlessly delved deep into the madness of Dwarf Fortress.

Now, 20 years later, Kitfox Games has given us casuals access to this once-impenetrable, timeless cult classic. The mouse support alone is revolutionary and worth picking up this Steam release, and the game comes with stunning visuals.

Toady, Zach and the Kitfox team have earned their $30 a million times over. Dwarf Fortress truly is a gift to humanity from two brothers who were not afraid to dedicate their lives to their art. There are other building sims out there today, but DF grandfathered them all.

Now go forth dwarf, strike the earth. Send your prayers to Armok. Build, perish, build again. May your craftdwarfship be of the highest quality.

Blade of Darkness (originally "Edge of Darkness") is a 2001 third person action-adventure game of swords, hammers and sorcery. The game is erroneously called the Dark Souls progenitor. As a Dark Souls/Elden Ring veteran, I categorize BoD closer to an action RPG with hilariously easy bossfights but difficult trashfights/level progression. The bossfights will not take hours, and the real challenge dwells in finding the right keys to doors and getting to the bosses.

While the graphics may be extremely dated, the main issue is the translation from keyboard/mouse to controller - the game was originally released without controller support and some of the weapon combos are buggy and difficult to execute on controller. I just finished the storyline with the dwarf Naglfar, and still never managed to get more than one accidental Ice Hammer combo off. The overall plot is also nothing to write home about - find the magic sword and slay the evil necromancer in his high castle.

Dark Souls veterans will also find the weapon swing and dodge delay to be aggravating. Movement tends to be tricky and the dodge/jump button can give you hell.

However, despite its myriad flaws, I would still recommend the game - the obvious flaws of this dated title lend it a challenging reputation. It feels uniquely rewarding to complete the levels. The environs and atmosphere are also top notch and the devs did a brilliant job creating diverse levels that visually resemble different parts of the world, from sandy deserts of Arabia to the frozen and treacherous winding paths of the Himalayas. The soundtracks add to the sense of imminent danger lurking in the next room or hallway - the final score for Dal Gurak is specially memorable with its haunting and repetitive chanting spelling doom for the hero.

If you are a fan of the Souls genre and can adapt to semi-janky controls without too many issues, Blade of Darkness is a very worthy action RPG to play through.
