Early Access Review
Its a good game, but in its current state, I cannot recommend it. There is such a thing as Too Early access and this is the text-book definition of it. I have no doubt that in 6 months to a year of constant development this game will be something special. But until then avoid.

Let me phrase that I actually do like this game. It took a bit for the mechanics to click, mostly because the control system is kinda unintuitive. Which is where most of my grievances with the game lies.

The gameplay feels kinda static, like I don't feel like a competant swordsman but some schmuck who picked up a sword and is now killing people. There is a cool mechanic where if you have blood on your sword you can flick it at your enemy to temporarily stun them, opening them up for an attack. But the problem is that half the time, you are either too close and they counter swing thus wasting the blood. Or they are too far away and recover too quickly for you to capitalize on that.

The AI is widely inconsistent with some enemies being so braindead I wonder how they function in the world the game is set in. And other times every enemy is the reincarnation of Miyamoto Musashi himself come to drain a comical amount of blood in from my veins with a well place slash.

I've beaten the first 4 bosses and man they are not made equal in terms of enjoyment. The first boss is a bandit leader at his hut surrounded by several of his boys who come at you from both directions. Wasn't as bad but it took more tries than I feel it should have. Sidenote: Nightfall mission was a pain in the ass but honestly kinda sick with the whole fighting bandit remnants in the pooring rain at night.

The Dojo boss is so far the absolute worst. He parries and dodges practically every attack I threw at him. Which wouldn't be too bad if his sword reach wasn't unrealistically long. Seriously, he killed me from like 10 feet away with a katana. I only beat him out of luck not skill and that really soured my taste for the game.

The next two bosses, one an insane bandit leader in a cave and another a samurai lord in his castle during a siege by rebels. I actually enjoyed both of them cause they didn't have some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gimmick. The samurai lord is backed up by his bodyguard but honestly they both felt pretty fair to fight.

Would I recommend this game, ehhh, it depends. Be prepared for some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ deaths and a hard challenge ahead.

Spread Democracy to these Godless Bugs and Socialist Automatons.

Edit: Sony decided to be penises and force a PSN requirement so if you don't have PSN in your country ♥♥♥♥ you.

Double Edit: Sony backed down the PSN changes thanks to Managed Democracy!

Edit from 08/06/2024:

It is honestly with a heavy heart I have to say I genuinely cannot recommend the game in it's current state. Despite Arrowhead, promising to revert and stop nerfing fan favorite weapons for the crime of being fun, they did so again in the most recent update. Until Arrowhead gets it's ♥♥♥♥ together and completely overhaul's their balance philosophy, stay away from this game.

Edit from 11/02/2024:

Forgot to update, but this game is back. Arrowhead have completely reversed course on their balance philosophy and made the game enjoyable again. Now all we need is Sony to stop being penises and put the game on Xbox and let people around the world play again.

It's a good base, but this game was honestly released way too early. Few maps that get stale quick, lack of autobalance results in one team dominating for the entire match, shields with oversized hitboxes, armor being completely useless despite being advertised as "realistic". That's not even getting into the fact that unless your using a rapier, a spear, or a greatsword your not gonna have a good time cause these weapons are the meta right now. Will change if the game improves later on but for right now I'd spend your 30 dollars elsewhere.

EDIT 5/16: Thankfully the devs have taken steps to decrease the usage of thrust weapons without going too overboard. I'll still keep this negative as I don't think this game is worth the 30 dollars right now due to lack of content affecting its staying power. Will change if this game gets updated

If this was the Blitzkrieg mod that I knew and loved 6 years ago I would have absolutely recommended it. But know it seems the mod developers have decided to take a near perfect formula of a mod with a realism focus and turned it into an utter mess. Lots of changes (mostly nerfs) have made this once balanced mod into an unbalanced unfun overall experience. I would recommend Europe At War at this point as it still has the realism, historical accuracy, and damage system of BKMOD but without most of the frustration.
