Updated graphics. Same old game. DLC adds enough to make the vanilla not worth playing.

This is the game they should have made to start with. There was little reason to make and now little reason to play the game this DLC expands upon.

If you can get past the frequently juvenile (of the "what a socially underdeveloped teenager thinks mature means" style) presentation there is some good gameplay to be had here.

Beyond Earth is a good example of what's wrong with modern game development.
These days you buy a "core game" for full retail price and then pay more for DLC to add on all the things that would have been incorporated into the retail version of the game in the old days. The higher prices wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for multiplayer. Multiplayer game mechanics and single player game mechanics are utterly different, particularly for strategy games, and since MP is where the money is you end up with single player experience getting shorted. Beyond Earth doesn't have even half of the personality of Alpha Centauri because why would they bother with depth and richness when you're expected to play against other people? As an integral game component other people suck. They're belligerent and foul mouthed, they cheat and drop connection if things don't go their way, and that's what modern games make their core mechanic. If you have a group of friends who game then you can have a good time with this, if not it is not and will never be worth your time or money.
You pay a lot more for a lot less.

Big open world with lots to explore, myteries to solve, factions to join or alienate, things to collect and of course fighting. The main plot offers decent replayability combined with a mountain of side missions and alignment choices for what if replays. Rarely does the game throw lots of enemies at you at once which lends itself to a variety of tactics based on your gameplay preferences.
Worth getting the DLC.
The game does tend to develop instabilities that can break it. So saving frequently, before and after each mission, in different save spots is useful to avoid losing all progress in a game.

This game is a lot of fun until you have to fight the aliens. The introduction of aliens jarringly alters gameplay by rendering most of what your character can do useless and reducing you to strafing zillions of shots at floaty bullet sponges.
You can have a lot of fun in the first half of the game so it gets a conditional recommendation.

Strealined and dumbed down version of the original in order to promote the all important multiplayer aspect. What remains is a worthwhile singleplayer game. The story continues to ramp ever upward in a way that clearly had more thought put into one-ups-manship than logic. Otherwise more of the same gameplay from the first. In many ways this is a superior game to the first, but it actually feels smaller. More polish and less passion went into this one.

Revisiting this I realize that the characters have abilities. Apparently they have abilities in the first one too but there they are so weak and badly implemented there I ignored them. Here the powers are actually fun. Also more of the cut scenes are skippable.
So better gameplay than the first one, worse story, bigger universe that feels smaller. Worth playing.

Great game. Everything about it is at least above average. Many people will be put off by the scale of character customization which is very much the last time such detail is seen in the RPG genre. Many of the novel and innovative concepts introduced or refined here became genre standards.

Beautiful game. Some of the old car designs are absolutley gorgeous, the city looks great. Takes you through multiple eras that really are evocative of the day they are meant to represent. Good if slightly generic plot. Good voice acting. Good gameplay. Unfortunately if you've played this game once then you've played it all. Zero replayability. It is worth a single play through. Just be aware that you'll never be revisiting it afterwards so get it at a good price. Very little to do outside of the plot.
