This is a very different animal from the original. It's a good game. This sequel excells at co-op against the AI, and predictably the single player aspect suffers for this. Unit limit caps are much lower, maps are smaller, options are fewer, and everything is simplified and streamlined to make for faster gameplay in the multiplayer environment. With all that said it is a superior entry into the RTS feild even if it doesn't scratch the same itch as the first one.

A bit like old school Sim City back before they stripped out gameplay in favor of political correctness. In addition to traditional city building you have to manage corruption, food production, factional politics, global politcs, and military threats. Unlike Simcity you start on a poverty stricken island so you won't make any money from taxes, you'll have to find ways to bring in funding from the outside, and that's where the challenges really start. Lots of depth and a map editor (challenge editor) add tremendous replayability. Also plenty of old fashioned keyboard cheats to play around with when you feel the need to send in the tornadoes.

Fun little game, but it doesn't allow for much in the way of deck construction which is over half of what MtG is all about. I'm giving it a conditional recommendation because it does play very well - note that I only went through the campaign.

At this point there's no way to get into the game. It's a pure multiplayer experience and if you don't have a group of friends playing the game you'll never have a chance to actually play it. There is no way to play this single player. The "bots" are useless to the point where this game cannot be played without a group, and the learning curve is steep enough that no one wants to play with a new player.

Outstanding BBC quality documentary. Somewhat in the same genre as the also excellent King of Kong without demonizing anyone. You just want to cheer everyone on. I had no idea what DOTA was before watching, doesn't look like something I'd play, but it is a blast to watch them compete - watching people who are really great do what they're great at.
Just a wonderful film experience. Highly recommended.

Continues the trend of simplifying that the series has undergone making it more approachable to the casual player, however this along with major bugs in a primary quest line are addressed by user generated mods.
One issue is that even though this is a "big open world" everything you interact with presents as a "narrow linear path" making the world seem much smaller than it should.

(even more updated) sadly the single player PVE game now has episode breaking glitches in some of the most critical episodes. Enemies spawning in locked rooms. NPCs freezing up. Can no longer recommend until these are fixed and they have now been broken for years.
(updated) Heavily modified from its original release version and constantly being improved. Perfectly playable for free as frequent events pay out ample amounts of in-game cash and rewards. Most of the time the episodes capture the feel of the television shows in an immersive way with many of the missions feeling as if they were adopted from scripts rejected for budget constraints.
(re-updated)
People keep saying it's pay to win. Pay to win... what? The only reasons to put real money into the game is "barbie" to get the look you want and if you're one of the freaks chasing the DPS ring which is a competition external to the game. DPS is pay to win, of course you're also going to need someone to teach you how to play and a bit of luck and then you may claim a top spot on one of the DPS boards for a moment. Whatever.
You get four top tier ships every year from events. Between gear unlocked from leveling reputations, completing episodes and what you can craft you have access to most of the best and all of the second best gear in the game with less than a percentage point of performance difference between the two. So what advantage can you pay for? Skipping grind mainly.
Admittedly I've put too much money into the game in pursuit of the perfect look aka barbie.
If you just want to play the PVE game you don't need to put a penny into the game, however the game doesn't teach you how to play it so if you try to bull your way through blindly you're going to explode... a lot. There are free guides everywhere free guides exist, but it is going to take time to learn as the real game mechanics are very counter intuitive.
Just don't get caught up in the DPS nonsense, learn how to play and you'll be fine. Also there's not any reason to play through the nuTrek episodes as the stories don't fit Star Trek, the gameplay "innovations" they did for those are bad, and the rewards are absolute garbage. Skip those.

Fun even if only a short single player story. The button combos are a bit too consol-ish. Fine for light entertainment. The DLC is worthless bling to impress the easily impressed.

Visually beautiful.
Kinda pointless.
It's hard to point to exactly what is wrong with this one. For being set in such a traumatic period the setting is dull. Alternate history where no matter what happens it changes nothing because the differences between the factions are negligable. It's a tiny map and each faction has the exact same objective so you'll be doing the same things in each playthrough. This makes the gamepaly repetitive. The units and cultures are generic to all factions with only slight variations. The samurai units are so grossly overpriced you can only justfy training them to have a prettier army.
The AI does not exist. Spawned stacks of troops march towards you in response to your progress. This provides the exact same experience each time you play with only slight variations. Tactically the "AI" responds to your mouse clicks rather than actual troop movements in a most unnatural way.
Naval warfare is extremely unexciting. Nearly all engagements, even with overwhelming force, are inconclusive draws that end when one side decides to leave the itty bitty map.
They did fix seiges which have always been broken in the series, but they did so by basically getting rid of them, all walls can be climbed and seige weapons are so rare you're likely to never see them.
I understand that the multiplayer is good.
I typically get hundreds of hours out of Total War games, this one I got one enjoyable campaign and a hundred hours trying to figure out why it's so incredibly not fun.
