Compassion, tolerance and patience are key to a better society and a better life.

Compassion is practised by asking what you/others need rather than to criticize.
Tolerance is gained by broadening your horizons so that you can respond calmly to any situation.
Patience is cultivated by sensing negative feelings and letting them pass.

Ok now an actual summary:
My first PC game is Age of Empires, when I was 7. I remember playing it on my sister's PC who often got mad when she needed it. And I'd get hit by my Asian mom whenever that happened.

Later I played Empire Earth on my cousin's PC, and freaking loved that game so much that he gave it to me. I still have that boxed Gold Edition. Also got hit by my mom for playing too long at my cousin's.

The resulting trauma must be one of the reasons I can't handle critique very well. I'm extremely sensitive to people being upset or emotional in any way, which is why I don't VC anymore. The How-to's are how I'm dealing with this.

Rise of Nations came much later. I still have the receipt that shows I paid €2 for it on 5 Apr 2014 10:26 and got €1 in return. Brilliant RTS. I wrote a review for it on Steam, which I'm most proud of. (right now, it's on the 2nd page of my Reviews, if you want to see it.)

When I was about 12, I started playing BF1942 which I think caused myopia as I always sat very close to the monitor trying to see far away enemies. Don't do this guys. Buy a bigger monitor and sit at least 1m away. Epic game though. Totally worth getting near-sighted for (not really).

Friend of mine bought me Empire Total War in 2010, because I kept talking about how much I wanted to play it. And that's how I got on Steam. I didn't intend for that to happen.

Around the same time, I got Section 8. Had huge fun with it, because you can set the map to 2 check points, and raise the amount of bots to 64. It became like a Survival mode. I have a video of this below. There's still a small S8 Discord community.

When I was 17 I stumbled on Mass Effect for €5 which had a huge influence on my life. See my review below.

During Christmas 2013, I got L4D2 for free, and played the crap out of the Survival mode from 2015 onwards. bcs 1. I was getting bored with my Astronomy Research degree (I love learning but hate research). 2. the game is just that good. most of my Steam friends come from L4D2 survival. Played L4D2 for some 10 years, and wrote an epic guide even if I say so myself, before I decided I wanted to give other games a chance as well.

And that's where I am now. Playing games and sharing them.
I also love epic music. See below for more.

Here's a list of the imo* best games/series in each genre/category along with their strong points.
*I'm fond of sci-fi, impactful graphics, fast-paced action, (classical) music, foreign languages. I don't like complicated puzzles, competitive games/people. I avoid supernatural horror to protect my sanity.

My Favorite Video Game Music
The Playlist
I made a youtube playlist for all my favorite songs from video games, excluding those with asterisks as I couldn't find them. will have to upload them myself. Hope you find something interesting in here.
Tracks will be added if something new catches my ears, of course.

https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLPeOtPgD5TbHeAQr3C2aP8F8-a_cywQVP&si=styzuoKSf1AB9Myn

I hope this playlist lives on long long after I'm gone. Well, that sounds kinda morbid.

The Foreword
-A good soundtrack can sometimes carry a game, or make a good game great. Final Fantasy is a game series that I played mostly for the music. Anno would not be so special without its phenomenal orchestral soundtracks. The playlist starts with some very relaxing songs from this series.
-I'm mostly a fan of instrumental music, but there are some really great songs from visual novels in here as well. And even some crazy Cantonese rap songs near the end.
-And yea, I'm a big fan of percussion. Some of the most epic moments for me are when the drums play the lead, like in the intro of Age of Wonders. The playlist has a lot of music from war games that are full of drums.
-I also like music with simple rhythmic melodies. Catch The Rabbit and Neo Industrialist come to mind. The latter has long sustained notes coming from some dramatic wind instrument that I never heard before. Almost sounds like an Erhu. Please tell me if you know what instrument this is.
-In terms of battle music, my favorite subgenre, I think Orcs Must Die! has the most adrenaline-pumping over-the-top headbanging pieces. Besides those, Anno 1701 's Battleground is my favorite. My God, those upward glissandos, and drawn out crescendos. Not to mention the haunting drum & bass line.
-Credit songs are my second favorite category, as they often give that bittersweet feeling of great accomplishment with a hint of sadness knowing that you have nothing to strive for anymore. Best credit song for me is M4 Part 2 from Mass Effect, partly because that's my favorite game of all time. I also like that the vocals are not as pronounced as in most vocal songs. Second favorite is easily Another Heaven.
-Game with the most melancholic songs would be Life is Strange. It was hard to put it in a fitting place, but I found a quiet spot between all the bombastic/orchestral stuff.
-The playlist ends with the happiest song of all, Pancake is Love , not to mention that game is an infinite happiness machine.
-For some titles I give translations, but not all because it takes up a lot of space. Also, the ones from GuJian are hard to translate, for me anyway.
-I really like how Trine, OMD, and FF fit together as medieval fantasy. And Medal of Honor signaling the end of the military theme. 彩樓戀曲 serves as a nice transition between Sword and Fairy and Sleeping Dogs. Bioshock is the most insane soundtrack and game on the list. It ended up after MoH, maybe as a reminder of PTSD?..

It's tough to write a review for Mass Effect, because, as cheesy as it sounds, words barely suffice. Mass Effect is almost like a religious experience for me, even though I'm an atheist. It allows you to transcend yourself and feel part of the greater universe.
As someone who wonders about the deepest questions of life, Mass Effect rubs me in all the right ways. I mean, isn't it strange that life and the universe exist? We are all here, but nobody really knows why or even just how yet. In Mass Effect, you will not only wonder, but you will actually find out!

Mass Effect has been my favorite game series, ever since I first played it over 10 years ago. It’s the only singleplayer game that I’ve replayed multiple times. It shattered my prejudices against science fiction, and as a result introduced me to some spectacular books like Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and Asimov’s Foundation series, and made reading fun for the first time in my life. It’s given me a future to dream about. Mass Effect feels like a glimpse into a possible future where we'll be traveling amongst the stars. Except, I don’t think FTL travel will ever be possible.

The main theme in Mass Effect is artificial intelligence, but it also explores deep political themes, e.g. how does each race organize their society? Is birth control (ever) the right solution?
The Paragon/Renegade system forces you to make hard decisions. What are you willing to sacrifice? Consequences may carry over to the next game, even all the way to the finale.

Mass Effect is also one of the best in world-building. As you walk around, you’ll often hear people talk about their work, how they view other aliens, etc. Side quests actually contribute to the lore.

That’s the greatness of Mass Effect, now a little bit about the individual games.

ME1
My favorite, and for most people the least favorite. ME1 is a proper introduction to the universe.
Here you can drive on tons of exotic exoplanets (for sidequests and extra credits) each with their unique atmospheres, terrain, and sometimes wildlife living on the large plains and tall mountains. It’s awe-inspiring. The main missions are also much more memorable for me than those in ME2 and ME3, because of the unique environments. (It's the side missions that most people find boring/repetitive.)
In ME1 you learn about the deepest secrets of the Mass Effect universe. The truth keeps getting worse as you find out more. The hallmark of a well-written story.

The prologue and finale of ME1 surpass the other two imo. The bombastic intro sets the stage for the whole trilogy, and the final boss fight was very disturbing. Also, the intro and credits songs are the best pieces of music in the series imo.

ME2
My least favorite, and for most people the favorite. ME2 moves the spotlight towards the shadier parts of the universe, where the law doesn’t reach. I don’t like that a lot of the game takes place in these forgettable poorly-lit corridors, and I don't like having to deal with criminals and mercenaries. It feels weird to be able to convince some of them to change their criminal behavior and lifelong-held beliefs with just a couple Paragon-flavored words.

In ME2 new alien races are introduced along with some 10(!!) new characters. I think the sheer amount of characters is not really a good idea. Combined with the freedom to choose your squad for any mission, the result is that characters don’t have as much dialogue.
There is one loyalty mission for each character. But 1 mission seems very little to gain loyalty of someone. Also, considering how personal the issues are in the missions, I always wonder how can I trust them to be motivated to fight for the fate of humanity? The characters in ME1 seem to have much greater ideals, and you also spend more time with them.
But I admit the loyalty missions are very well written. They all explore some ethical question. Mordin and Samara were my favorites. They were often (un)intentionally funny, because of how radical their views are.

ME2 is much more difficult than ME1, because you don’t have infinite ammo anymore. And the enemies have become more resourceful. They throw grenades now, with 100% accuracy.
The Harbinger enemy always creeps me out, as he slowly walks up to you with huge HP and a very devastating biotic attack that stuns you even when you're behind cover.
I remember when I first played 10 years ago, I'd die a lot in ME2, sometimes like 20-30 times in the same area, and the final Suicide Mission was the only moment in the trilogy I had to lower the difficulty. But playing the Legendary Edition, it was mostly smooth sailing. So you do need some experience in shooters if you want to survive, but it's actually not the hardest game.

I highly recommend people to play the whole trilogy on the highest difficulty, Insanity. For me, it really added to the feeling that you are struggling against the most powerful forces of the universe.

ME3
Nobody’s favorite. But still great in its own right.
The writing is slightly less compared to ME1 and ME2, I guess because the lead writer has been replaced. Shepard feels a bit out of character at the start, but you get used to it.
In ME3 they tried to make things more emotional, but it doesn’t work very well. With how many millions of people have died so far, why am I now supposed to care about this one child?

In ME3 there are almost no more great mysteries, but still a lot of interesting backstory. The Leviathan DLC is really the best DLC of the trilogy. The planet you’ll land on is unlike anything else, terrifyingly vast, in line with the general vibe of Mass Effect. In one of the main missions, you uncover some interesting secrets of Asari culture.
The ultimate fate of many species will depend on your choices in this game!! along with some choices made in the previous two.

ME3 is not as mysterious as ME1 or diverse as ME2, but it is the final climax. The ending is guaranteed to blow you out of your seat, if not move you to tears knowing that you just experienced the most epic story in all of gaming history.

I honestly think people will still be playing Mass Effect in 2183, just as we are still listening to Beethoven now.
And some exoplanets are going to be named after this game’s planets. At least, I think that would be pretty cool.
