I would argue it was shortly after the addition of the revenant class that the game went from a decent into a nosedive. I forget if that was before or after the lunar lancer. eh.
It was another one of those amazing games that just had a simple joy to it just existing in it. I won't go so far as to call it the best game ever, it never was, it was never meant to be, and the original teams understood that and embraced it, and that's what made it shine.
Shame. Big shame.

Note, before anything else I just want to direct you to this: http://www.secretsofgrindea.com/index.php/dev-blog

This is the dev blog. as you can see, this has been in development for four years, and over the course of these years, they have keeping us up to date, with less the a post per week being non-existent for a long time now. This progect has a very dedicated team working on it. Don't worry, AT ALL, about this game never being finnished. It already almost is, after all.

Now that that's out of the way, There's not much else that I can say which you wouldn't learn by watching the trailer. This is a game inspired by, and fashioned after a lot of the old clasics. A bit of Zelda here, a bit of metroid there, and splashes of a lot of other games. I personnaly have been holding back on this game, waiting for it to be finnished before I continue to the second dungeon, but I've played quite a bit of survival (even if I'm still not that good) and enjoyed every minuet of it. Honestly, I recomend you watch the trailer on the store page, it does a better job then I could showing you what this game is, but if you still have some questions, ask below. I'll answer as best I can.

If your looking for a game with really good gunslinging action, that really makes you feel like the best gunslinger ever, this is not the game for you. In fact, I think the gunplay is the worst part of this game.

But, thats not to say this is a bad game. in fact, it's one of my favorites at the moment. The world, the dialouge, everything else contributes to the feeling that your playing through a classic western flick. I normally would of shrugged this off but with how it was structured, I really got invested as I learned more and more about my family's killer. It gave him a face, a story, it really drew me in and made me feel like I was hunting a criminal to deal justice to rather then another faceless AI I was just going to shoot, and the payoff to this buildup really felt like it was worth it. Admitedly, there were a few silly moments and cliches that were parodied, but I didn't feel like they pushed it too far.

This really rubbed me in all the right ways, and if your a fan of those old movies like True Grit and the like, get this. You won't be disapointed. Just remember this is far more fun because of how cinimatic it is.

I'll keep it short.

At the time of writing, I've only clocked four hours. Yet I still feel confident enough to write a fair review. That's a good sign. It means this game shows you what it wants to be up front.

The natural comparison is the Sonic franchise, but I disagree. I think a better comparison is to that whole era. The speed is front and foremost, while the combat is more akin to a simple beat-em-up. These two feelings blend wonderfully once you gain a bit of an understanding. (Lilac's fight with a specific mini-boss does an amazing job showcasing how perfect it can feel, provided you've gotten skilled enough to earn that feeling, which is how it should be, if you ask me.)

Each of the three characters have varied and different feels to them, the most outstanding of those being a puppy girl who has light puzzle and exploration gameplay. Much more slowed down, which can be a nice change of pace. You wouldn't need to worry about this breaking the feel. Unlike, say, Sonic Adventure 2 where your jumping between three different gameplay modes at the will of the game. Rather, you pick one character and follow them all the way through the story.

To sum up everything, this is psydo-universe Sega that took the Sonic franchise down a different route. One that is, arguably, better. Most people seem to agree.

I have just one problem with ths game.

just one.

Maybe I'm wrong, and if I am I'll change this review in a heartbeat, but once you start playing this game, don't you dare stop. Ever. Break from the game for any length of time and every single one of your territories will be taken over by other player's ascended.

You can't stop. You may never stop.

I backflipped off a wall and delivered a dive kick to my opponent's face, then snapped his neck while down. Cartwheeling over his sword to pick it up, I continued on to the edge of the screen where my foe suddently spawned half a step in front of me. He took advantage of my suprise with a well placed thrust, and took off twords his goal.

I spawned in front of him, instantly throwing my sword while staying close behind it. I jumped up and launched into a dive kick as he was busy deflecting the sword hurtiling twords his face. Killing him and takeing control of the screen, I quickly advanced to the next and final screen, securing my victory.

My prize was to be eaten by a giant worm. I would accept nothing less.

10/10 would snap necks to please worms again.

I've put well over 2000 hours into the games accross the whole series on concol, yet there's nothing I can say that hasent already been preached 1000 times.

So I'll just say that I've never been big on builds in any game yet this is the one that finnaly got me to experament with a few. here's my favorite.

Don't take this game seriously.

No, really, don't.

If you can't tell from the title and the concept of the game, it's a silly game. If you can embrace that, and slog through the mediocre gameplay, it's great for a few laughs. It burns through ALL the fantasy game tropes at a blinding pace, and does so somewhat compitantly. It might not be enough to make up for some of the failings of this game, but it will for some people. so yea, pick it up if your thinking you'll be ok with that.

Don't go in looking for a chalange or anything overly complex. this is not that kind of game.

Play for the sillyness. not much else to it, and I don't think that's necisaraly a bad thing...

Your stuck between two enemies and will take damage no matter what. Which one should you kill first?

Slide across this ice to who knows where, or take a hit that will leave you with only half a heart of health?

So remember back when all we had were flash games that, by today's standards, we would call "simple", or "quaint"?

Don't get me wrong, there were some amazing flash games out there, like thing thing and Sonny, but a lot of them were rather... bleh...

This game's basicly a love letter to top-down shooter flash games, which were one of the more common and usualy simple ones that people made.

Now that can be a good thing, or a bad thing. I'll let you decide.

But TBH I don't give 2 ♥♥♥♥♥ what you think, I'm enjoying it so !@#$ off.
