You truly do not understand the hype for this series until you play Mass Effect 2. The game has been completely revamped (which is a good and bad thing, but mostly good) with a new combat system, better graphics, and a much better storyline. Combat is actually fun now and pretty inense at times, surprisingly good for a third person shooter. The music is pretty sweet too and can really pump you up, but at times it falls flat just like its predecessor. There is never a dull moment in the story either, which is more than the first Mass Effect can say (Presidium and Wards anybody?). The only complaint I have is the dumbing down of the RPG elements (far less leveling options and specials) and the complete ousting of an inventory system, which is a total WTF. Luckily, you'll hardly notice as what passes for the inventory is seamlessly integrated. This game is amazing, there really is no other way to describe it. 10/10

Complete with "hardcore" swearing, more action, a talking Isaac, and even a multipayer feature, the sequel has been thoroughly "EAified". Surprisingly, this isnt so much of a bad thing. Single player is much more entertaining and noticably less spooky than the original, with more customization options. Isaac speaking works well too, even if he doesnt have much of a personality. Game looks beautiful as well. Multiplayer however, is a total piece of crap. It looks good on paper, but fails hard in execution. Teams are usually horribly imbalanced with all the high levels on one side, and the newbs on the other. The game doesnt even bother to mix up the teams after each round. Its like high school gym all over again with the fatties on one side and the jocks on the other. When you're not being farmed though its pretty fun. Overall, very entertaining. While the first was something you'd only want to experience once, this one is good for a couple of replays. 8/10

A very entertaining game. It has a great, haunting and depressing plot that will stick with you (it was based on a Russian book) but unfortunately, even with alternate endings, the game seems to kind of "fizzle out". Its pretty immersive, without many of the HUD elements that are so common of most FPS' these days. Some parts are pretty spooky as well, but nothing bad enough to put the less brave souls off. The game is difficult too; 2-3 shots are often more than enough to kill you, and you'll be sneaking around areas infested with enemies. Unfortunately, the game does suffer from a few glaring issues. First, swinging your weapon around to shoot isnt as smooth as it could be. Second, its incredibly frustrating at parts as it is so easy to die and the auto-save compounds the issue by saving or not saving at incredibly inopportune moments. Also, the stealh element can be frustrating and sometimes seems broken. Despite these issues, I highly reccomend Metro; its a great game. 8/10

Believe the hype. This game is TERRIFYING. So terrifying in fact, that I had to take month long breaks at certain parts of the game. A true horror game in every aspect. There's no way to fight back (you can only run and hide), and the game does not rely upon cheap or jump scares. It builds up suspense to the point of it being unbearable, immerses you, and instills a sense of isolation and helplessness. Its the kind of game that you hate to play but hate even more to be away from. It sucks you back in every time until you brave every second of it; Amnesia takes hold and won't let you go. Its enough to make you afraid of the dark again. Besides this, the game is quite technically impressive, especially for an indie game. The main story isn't too long, but alternate endings, custom stories, and the new Justine content assures you get all the bang for your $20 buck. Not for the faint of heart; you know they've done it right when you have to constantly remind yourself its only a game. 10/10

Not your average action game. In fact, its just plain amazing: surprising for a super hero game. Arkham Asylum manages to capture the stealth, detective, and flat out brawl aspects that are all so integral to Batman. I could beat up thugs all day with this combat system, it literally never gets old... there's a certain thrill to watching Batman flip around, punch, counter, throw, takedown, and unleash combo moves upon his enemies (victims really). Leaving a goon for his buddies to find is especially entertaining as they begin to panic and Joker taunts them over the intercom. The visuals are also great as Batman stalks through a dark Arkham Island that's been taken over by Joker and his cronies... but they will soon learn the real one to fear on this crazy island is you. I can find no fault with this game, it has depth and substance which is not something you see often from games in this genre nowadays. 10/10

The much more frightening sequel to Penumbra: Overture. This game is terrifying: crawling around in the darkness hiding from enemies, the music, the feeling of isolation and helplessness, it all comes together well in this title. The story here is also good; not only about a man's will to survive and his search for answers but also exploring the depths of human nature (you may ask yourself "who's really the bad guy here?" more than once while playing). You might also doubt your eyes as your character hallcuinates occasionally. Basically the game screws with you a lot. Although as the game progresses you grow more and more accustomed to these aspects and will not scare quite as easily (this can be both a good and bad thing). The game is fun and well worth the money, although it is scary enough to put off some gamers... you've been warned. 8/10

My new favorite. Amazing, eerie and distrubing. A great adventure game in its own right with enough horror mixed in to satisfy those expressly looking for it and without making the game too scary for the casual gamer (although it certainly has its "crap your pants" moments). The game engine is very realistic and the controls are intuitive unlike anything I have ever seen before. The story is mysterious and gripping, drawing you in from the very start. While a common criticism is that the story kind of drops off in the game, thats kind of the point as it shifts from Philip's search for answers to a struggle to survive and escape (and the fact that this is the first installment in a two game series). The audio is well done, the story is great, the controls are impressive and the game is incredily immersive (perhaps too immersive...). I would reccomend this game to adventure and horror fans as well as anyone looking for something different. Short, but worth the money. 9/10

Although certainly unpleasant (and with some jump scares), not exactly what I'd call "horrifying" (because I could actually finish it!). Its still a great action game though with an engaging story and characters. It also has a nice replay option. I really enjoyed this game, 9/10.

Can be a little repetitive with wave after wave of the same enemies, but really you can not help but enjoy yourself as you slice, shoot, and detonate your way through hordes of enemies, even after the 20th+ time.
