This game vivisected and bisected me and replaced my bits with perfect shiny screws and set me loose upon the world to teach the song of agony to the flaccid masses

Early Access Review
When you buy a day one Early Access title, you're more or less funding an idea (as opposed to buying a finished product). Does this game have a lot of potential? Yes. Is it fun? Yes, generally. Does it lay the groundwork for lots of unique and exciting mechanics with lots more on the way? Of course! Is it polished? No. Is it finished? No. Does it have lots of issues, some big, most small, that need ironing out? Yes. Do I think that you should buy CONVRGENCE? Yes, I think ideas like this should be supported. Just don't expect Into the Radius levels of gameplay (seriously, the two are totally different) or polish, or you'll be confused.

"But how does the game actually play?"

Rising from the ashes of Paradox of Hope (R.I.P.), CONVRGENCE features an impressively high level of interactivity, especially for a day-one EA title. The player can do all the expected actions, e.g. reloading guns, turning valves, stabbing enemies, throwing knives or grenades, ect. Beyond this, though, is a shockingly high amount of "useless" interactions that serve to spice things up and spark joy for the player: lighting and smoking cigarettes, pressing buttons and levers in the player's loading screen van, flipping lightswitches, lighting candles and oil lamps, shaking a box of bullets to hear the rattling of brass, ect. Certain interactions could still use some work, though; the two-handed weapons don't always play very cleanly, and the poor optimization occasionally makes the interactions feel stuttery and unsatisfying.

The gameplay is currently the largest stumbling block, which, again, as an EA title, isn't unexpected. Large, mazelike maps and dumb, repetitive enemies (for the first map, at least) combined with simple quests (collect X items, find X story object, kill X enemy) make the core gameplay loop deeply uninspired - why would I want to do 4 raids that are all exactly the same so I can unlock a better gun and backpack? That's boring! For the record, the second map is a lot better in this regard - better, smaller, more varied map + much more dangerous enemies. The first one might need some work, though.

The guns range from decent to pretty good. The starting revolver is cool, very interactive and physical (which is what all VR guns should strive to be) although the scope, without any aim stabilization, is next to useless. The PPSh is fun to spray with, but the Tokarev's iron sights are misaligned (causing the player to always shoot high), which isn't fun. The characters are interesting, the main base has a lot of style and little bits that make it feel alive. The VA ranges from pretty good to less than good; when it works, it sounds good, but some lines have really strange delivery/pacing, both from the radio lady and not-Uncle ("keep your balls in LEED"). Russian audio with English subtitles option plz? :)

Either way, keep up the good work! I can't imagine how great this game will come to be, what we have now is an excellent proof of concept.

Tentative yes - it's a pioneer of the genre but is very jank compared to modern VR shooters. You should probably play the second one instead.

The bones are here and the gameplay we currently have is instantly engaging. Hardcore Crusoe VR survival? Sign me up! There isn't a ton here, though. Not entirely unexpected, as the game has only been out for a few weeks, but just be aware that by purchasing the game now (as a very Early Access title) you're buying into a good idea that will continue to grow and change for the better as opposed to a finished product. Excited to see what happens next!
