The End of the Sun is a beautifully crafted game set in a Slavic medieval fantasy world. An engaging story filled with magic and mystery.

The Story

You play as an Ashter, a sage sorcerer with the ability to travel through time amongst other rare gifts. You come across a small village where things are not what they seem and all the people are missing, or seem to be. Explore, find clues and solve puzzles to solve the mystery. You can teleport between the four main seasons, each separated by many years. And some things you do in the past have consequences in the future.

The story has many twists and turns and is quite complex. It mainly follows the tale of one family and the events and people that evolve around them. There is a strong magical component to the story with creatures of fantasy and folklore playing an important role.

Gameplay & Features

Settings & features (there are a lot of settings) - Video and graphic settings are extensive. Display options, resolution, brightness, graphic presets, motion blur on or off, anti-aliasing settings. There is also a section for audio controls. Language selection and Controls.

* You can rebind your keys
* Head nod can be turned off
* This game does support wide screen and ultra wide monitors
* Save your game (manually) often. The game also auto saves.

This is a narrative experience first blended with a walking sim. You will walk around quite a bit, finding and exploring objects, solving puzzles and piecing together a mystery. You solve the puzzles by examining points of interest such as footprints, blood and items. Once examined you will gather clues or tips that pieced together will help you solve the puzzles.

How you solve puzzles…

Essentially you're going to interact with bonfires. Some can only be interacted with in certain seasons-you can tell which ones you can interact with as they will have smoke rising from their base. For example in one area in Season Spring Year 1 you interact with 4 bonfires but can only have one active at a time. You activate them and follow the trails of smoke coming from them.

At the end of that trail is a memory to trigger and an item to usually find to mend the memory, so to speak. Once you’ve completed that the smoke path leading to that event turns to a trail of light (kind of like fireflies), and signalling you’ve done that quest. Once all quests associated with that bonfire are complete you can interact with it to make it a time travel spot.

You will need to cleanse all bonfires in a season to complete it fully but you will not have access to all bonfires at once. Some are locked behind story progression and goals in other seasons must be completed first.

Please take note…

You only have one save file so when the game auto saves or you save manually it over-writes the last save so you cannot go back to a certain point in the game if you missed something.

The Visuals & Audio

The developers spent a lot of time crafting the look of this game by scanning authentic props and buildings and adding details that make the scenes more realistic, things like silverware, clothes, decor, candles and foods. When you interact with these items they give you bits of knowledge about them. So the game has an educational element too!

The first thing that caught my attention and drew me to wanting to play this game was the soundtrack playing in the trailer. Inspired by traditional Slavic melodies and interwoven with modern tracks. I love their chants, the vocals are just beautiful. Really infuses the game with a sense of magic.

A shout out to Kinga Rąpała for such a beautiful soundtrack, her work adds so much atmosphere to the game.

Ambient sounds are also well done, the sound of the wind through the trees, birds singing, or water running all add to the environment and make it feel more fleshed out.

The voice acting for English voices is okay but to be honest I much preferred the native language of Polish in the game. I put the subtitles in English but really enjoyed the Polish voice acting. It also made the game much more immersive.

Overall Experience

This game is very well written with a very engaging story told through multiple moments or memories you activate as you explore and solve puzzles. Movement in the game itself feels good, you can run at a good pace or walk but there is no jumping.

I completed the main story but missed a few side events, also I believe a couple of achievements may not have popped for me as well. A small thing that can be easily fixed. Overall I had no bugs or game breaking problems at all in my entire time with the game which lasted almost 14 hours.

I can tell a lot of love went into every detail of making this game. Playing through the character of the Ashter your witness to the unfolding of a story between a family touched by fate at various points in their lives. Engaging, educational and magical. ✨

@Hairy Mary I agree! I actually only heard about the game through my IndieGems review group. Once I heard the music and seen the trailer it drew me in. I loved the idea of a Slavic fantasy game.
