*** Campaign only review: ***

Different from Halo 1,2 and 3, do not expect something like this. These feel like a very intense, thrilling movie without the possibility to take a breath, which had very compelling story telling. This was due to their relative linear level design (not linear compared to other games) and the developers very able to create a more vivid atmosphere with more details.

Halo Infinite on the other hand has more freedom and liberty, since it basically is a sandbox game, and gives you the ability to take different approaches on missions and quests. Like long range combat? Take the Sniper rifle! Do you want to cuddle with your enemies? Get the shotgun! Tired of these lone wolf one man army missions and need some company? Get 5 marines in the warthog light em up as a team! Halo's level always were big, this is a new dimension. 343 Industries went in a different direction here. Daring choice, but successful choice!

Storywise H I , still feels like a movie, but far less linear and does not feel so intense, compared to its predecessors, which really captivated one because of their stories. Do not expect "more of the same" and something similiar to Halo 1,2 and 3. However the story stands out on its own and portrays Masterchief as human with feelings behind the armor and his connection to Cortana is also presented well. The Masterchief hardly talks, but when he talks it is short, precisely and clear, where some words say more then some people with 100 words and in H I he talks a lot for his standards. There are also other characters portray and this time not as super cool killing machines, now simply humans with goals, wishes, fears and feelings. 343 Industries did a different, but very good job here. Refreshing to see something like this.

The regions you play in on the Halo ring "Zeta" have not much diversity. There is always the same mountainous region with some trees of a temperate broadleaf and mixed forests region, but no desert region, snowy region or urban region. there are many indoor levels, but after some missions they get repetitive again and after some time you get a "Deja Vu". There are no outstanding POI worth of exploring or one would like to return to which stick to your mind, like Groove street in GTA San Andreas.

A main problem are also the repetitive tasks, e.g. you have to rescue marines, kill an enemy squad and its leaders or have to free an outpost.

For the gameplay the best description for H I is "if the Halo and Far Cry series would have a child, this would be the result." In Far Cry you had to liberate outposts and had a lot of freedom and an open world, so it feels very similiar to Far Cry, but shares it main weakness, that some of the quests become repetitive and annoying at one point.

There is also a nice variety of weapons and vehicles, but no possibility to dual wield guns. This feature was present in previous games, so it is not understandable, why it was cut.
The new special abilities feature is really cool and also offers more and new approaches in combat situations, but the grappling hook is the dominant ability and the one which is used the most of the time.

The dialogs people have and things they day are probably one of the best from the entire franchise. The smalltalk between NPCs humans and aliens and what they say during battle or while roaming are hilarious and humorous, even without Sgt. Johnson, but take away a bit of the serious, stifling atmosphere. The main enemies, the Brutes feel like stupid Gorillas. Depends on if you like this approach to portray enemies. The Elites also do no feel quite Elite anymore. They feel dumber and their combat tactics are by far less sophisticated. Back then they felt like an honorable, intelligent enemy, but an enemy one must respect and likes to have. Maybe their portrayal is part of the story, since Brutes and Elites are basically religious fanatics.

NPCs are not very intelligent in this game and hardly use the environment to their advantage.

Personal sidenote, the music is not as good as in the predecessors, but this also falls into the category storytelling, where the predecessors where by far more intense and you literally felt the seriousness and hopelessness of the situation.

The graphics are above average, but it is satisfying to look at the game. It still has got its classic timeless look.

Recommended if:
o You are an old Halo veteran and want to continue Masterchief's adventures
o Like open world shooters and want to decide on your own how you play missions

Not recommended if:
o You do not like repetitive environment and tasks

Did I have fun playing it? Yes! It has got its flaws, but it is funny and one of the games one like to play, when you get home after a hard day at work and which keeps you occupied.

I still have not played the MP and will then update my review.

Sorry for any spelling and grammar mistakes made. it is 2 am, and English is not my native language. I will correct them in the future.

How can someone release such an unfinished game? The other question is: Why am I such an idiot and bought it? Hopefully the refund works.

Edit: playtime 2h 3min, I got a refund.
