Doesnt hurt to take a break from cutting blocks or shooting zombies every now and then.

Meditation VR aims to replace zeds with zens :s

The guided "experience" runs approx 15 minutes. Currently there is just one (the island beach setting shown), with another listed as coming soon.
https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2252538231

The game features a few key options, from turning on/off the guide, to adjusting the volume of the music, effects, and dialog separately. And then the graphically options, shown here:
https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2252537470

Post processing and effects both have a large impact on performance, other settings less so, but also dont change the IQ as much either. The game ran at the settings shown on an Index paired with a 9700K & 2080ti at a locked 45fps. CPU usage is low. The GPU was at approx 70% usage on average, meaning it was well short on being able to hit the target of 90fps. An RTX3080 should just mange it. SS was at the default 150% and also has a large impact on performance (requires game restart). 100% looks very blurry, and while 200% does sharpen the image, its incredibly punishing to run ~30fps when maxed out.

I did find it relaxing, and could see therapeutic benefits from such experiences. But on a personal note, I am very conscious (I must be made of weak stuff) of the HMD when I am idle in VR, and for the most relaxing experience would just rather an audio only (ie just headphones).

Currently free, so it cant hurt to try it for yourself.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS (*queue pathetic confetti*) to you! 2020 has failed to kill you so far <3

Im sorry to hear that you are considering suicide (frowny face). And so, before you dip your actual toe into the bath with a toaster, do a test run with your virtual toe. Education is important (unless you are obscenely hot.)

Niceties aside, I played this game on an Index. Game was received for free via *this* curator group.

Ok, so the second first of all is, I dont think you are expecting a masterpiece at €5.99, which would be sound thinking (I am spelling this one out, because if you are contemplating suicide your thinking may not be so sound - ok pinky swear thats the last joke on that.) The premise is however masterpiece adjacent, you are having a bad dream and must wake up in time to stop your beer falling on the ground. I think. Which is kind of amazing.

Gameplay is not bad. This is thanks to the variety on offer, as you jump into one completely disconnected hairbrained scenario after another! There is light puzzle solving, gadgets, and platforming to varying degrees of success.

Controls. Full Index support, good news for those who refuse to buy things they cant wiggle their fingers in! A few typical options are here, smooth/tele/snap. There is some jankiness, clipping into objects is common, and I had to disable vibration as it could get obnoxiously strong. I briefly tried with VIVE wands and it seems ok on those, BUT I was unable to smooth turn! This may be down to the fact that I am switching between controllers and the game is confused (The game was started fresh with either the Index OR VIVE controllers on and the correct controller was shown in game), so if you are a VIVE wand user, you might want to double check before buying if you like smooth turning.

Performance. Its not great news. I played around quite a bit with settings so you dont have to! Presently using a 9700K OC & 2080ti OC, Steam VR SS at default recommended 150%, 120Hz and Ultra + all extras in game. This has no hope of running well! It doesnt seem reasonable for a game with these visuals to be so demanding. Dropping to 90Hz still couldnt keep it solid. The short answer is 'Ambient Occlusion' is a killer here for *very* little difference. 'Bloom' is next, and 'Amplify Color' after that.
I could either play with AO disabled, with enough room to bump SS up to 180% or so and keep things smooth at 90Hz, or as a last resort I did try out Motion Smoothing, which let me keep everything on and play at 120Hz. Its an option most dont seem to like and one I tend to ignore myself as I can usually play anything fine, its only a question of how much can I pump Res and/or Hz.
This kind of bothered me as the Store page has ridiculous system requirements (seems to be copy pasta'd from the pancake version of the game - definitely false for VR!!) However, with the range of settings available, you will be able to run this on entry level (GTX970) hardware.
TL;DR Performance hurting? Try turning off Ambient Occlusion.

The game is average, harmless fun. It has a few hours of content (*as per the dev.) Its fairly priced IMO, so its a thumbs up.

The first thing that needs to be said about HORIZON VANGUARD (not shouting), other than I played it on an Index, is this game is tough. If you dont like games in which you die a lot and start over, this probably is not for you.

Playing this really reminded me of various games of the 80s and 90s, not even specifically of this genre, but ones that had you face off against bosses with bullet-hell style action. It had a nostalgic feel, even tho I wasnt thinking about any particular game. On the subject of difficulty, there are no settings per se, however there are cheat-like options if you wish.
https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2174739969
I played for the most part at defaults, at which it took me a good 10 attempts to complete the first level! I tried briefly with invincibility on and its exactly as exciting as you can imagine! The speed options is kind of interesting, I tried 80% (enjoyed it) and 20% (stoooopidly slow.))

Gameplay, its straight out of a 90s arcade. SEGA-virtua-somethingsomething-crisis-cop-on-rails-4. You can maneuver
around a square area, while you fire a laser from your bike and wield a pistol in your dominant hand. You will need to watch not only your front, but also your sides and overhead (and even behind in select encounters.) Lives are limited and extremely rare (too rare IMO!). There are some basic pickups, beefing up your bikes laser, "intel" which unlocks alternative routes should you collect them on within a single run, etc.

Performance is interesting. I monitored 2 sessions. The 1st with everything turned on, MSAAx4, res shown in game was 4936*2740 and a refresh target of 120Hz - this had my 2080ti being well pushed, but it was smooth with no noticeable drops. The 2nd I left things at default, everything on, MSAAx2, res scale set to 0.8 and a target refresh of 90Hz - this had my GPU asleep, it was at about ~30% usage with passive cooling. Thats a bit of a difference in performance! I cant say there was a huge difference between the 2 during play, apart from aliasing being unpleasant on the horizon, I wasnt feeling like I was missing out otherwise. The takeaway is, without needing to butcher settings, entry level VR hardware will run this fine.

Its a thumbs up, but not an overly enthusiastic one. It feels a bit too "gen1", I was wanting a little bit more of a spectacle. Not everyone will care/miss this of course. I do like my flashy bangy OTT effects and positively ridiculous Michael Bay level explosions and this game wasnt giving that to me. But it does deliver that punishing shmup formula, if thats what you are after ;)

This game was received free via *this* VR group.

Quickie review, as its the last day of the sales and this thing deserves more love.

Played on Index with Index controllers.

Saw this deeply discounted and figured why not. I honestly wasnt expecting much. Right off the bat, thing didnt want to start (launching from within VR dashboard)! Tried twice, then decided to launch from desktop where I was presented with a few options - this way worked, yay!

There was a little intro, small flair which plenty of indie games forgo (for better or worse). When greeted with the menu I wasnt completely liking the navigation. You had to point and hold aim for a second to select things, felt like a Vive 2016 tech demo, my expectations were dropping >_<;

Into the game I go. Controls are a little odd on Index - you are shown what look like Vive prompts - with you needing to press the little trackpad (or you can use the thumbsticks) to change the colour of the ball. At this point I am thinking I will probably attempt a few levels and just bail...

Within minutes, I was getting used to the controls and new mechanics were being introduced, I found myself getting a bit sucked in TBH! After clearing 14 or so levels, I had such a smile on my face from my brain being fried and laughing at my successes and many failures. This game is actually *a lot of fun*. Fair warning, it does get harder and HaRder anD HARDeRR >_<;

Big thumbs up from me.

I received this product for free via this VR curator group.

I played predominantly on the Index with a gamepad, but also tried out motion controllers, and on desktop too.

Mini Motor Racing X is a great and welcome entry for RC type racers in the VR space. Its easy to pick up and packs a nice amount of content. There is a demo available, and your progress from that is carried over to the full version - nice!

One of the most surprising aspects for me was just how different it feels on desktop, the camera angles offered are quite different from VR and that really does mix things up. You tend to be more up close and personal on the desktop, with more camera movement, compared to VR which has you by default in a wider overview with a selection of angles which can put you trackside, or even further away!
https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2144896840

There are a good range of options, from audio, graphics, controls, etc. 3 Difficulty settings, and to play with or without weapons.

On the controls side of things, I preferred playing with a gamepad (didnt try with a wheel, who knows that could be fun o.0) With a gamepad you can pick to steer clockwise/anti or have the car point in the direction of your stick. With motion controllers you can pick to steer clockwise/anti, or by pointing the controller, or by twisting the controller. When in cockpit mode, you grab the wheel with motion controller. I tried them all but happily went back to the vanilla thumbstick rotate, but options are always nice!

Performance.
Desktop ran maxed out 4K with MSAAx8 capped at 94fps (gsync) with such little GPU (2080ti) usage the fans didnt even come on. This thing could probably run on good integrated graphics!
VR obviously takes a bit more, but entry level (GTX970) hardware should be fine. I played for a bit using 2 settings to compare data. Default SS (Steam has set to 150%), 90Hz with everything in game at default, which was high and MSAAx4 - with this the GPU was at about 30% usage, and didnt drop any frames. 2nd test was set to 120Hz and in game res scale set to 1.5 - with this the GPU was being quite well used, typically 80%+, and it held the frame rate at all times.

A few things I would like to see added
- Ability to play local coop with one person in VR and the other on desktop
- Track editor (Which I believe its predecessor had :s)
- Slightly wider detection range for showing track outlines. While you can jump about viewing positions during play, I preferred to stay putt, and if your car goes behind a structure you get the outline of the track, but it can be cut pretty close
https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2144899771

This is a lot of fun and an easy recommendation!

When the most frightening thing in a horror game is the textures, you know you are doing something wrong.

I played this game trying various setups. Desktop, and in VR with the Valve Index + Xbox controller, mouse/kb, Index controllers, and Vive wands.

I got this game free more than its worth via the curator program from >THIS< lovely VR group, which usually has a more positively humoured Aussie doing reviews and videos.

Performance is terrible. A 2080ti was unable to keep 120fps in this game at default settings (by that I mean steam VR settings, because this game has no settings), and it was ROUGH, some games I dont mind some droppage but I felt it badly here. On desktop @4K my framerate went between 50 and 300fps (mostly double digits) .... on this mobile game.... on a 2080ti.

Controls are terrible. You feel floaty. You aim as if you are a mannequin. In VR, pushing up on the thumbstick/trackpad is to move forward, but left or right is to open your inventory (which sometimes doesnt want to close). You cannot turn (lets be honest, no ones doing turning anymore!!), so you need to spin in your chair (yes, its listed as seated.) Theres plenty more I can say, but its just all bad. All of it.

Graphics are ... it has graphics - they're fine for the most part. The most interesting thing I have to say about them is how distracting it is to turn your head only to have buildings and landscape come into view (light up) in your periphery.

Even bearing in mind its low price and the fact it is an indie title, I cannot come up with anything good to say about it. Its literally a mobile game which was ported to PC. As if 2020 wasnt going bad enough.

*E: It occurred to me today that there is something good I could say about it. The little I saw of the level showed some effort was made. Its possible this is an ok mobile game - maybe. But most PC users dont like bad console ports, that goes quadrupley so for a mobile port. So while it was ambitious of this dev to try cater to so many platforms, this one I hope was a learning experience and better luck to them in the future.

This game was received for free via the VR curator program from this lovely group >HERE<. It was played on the Valve Index HMD & controllers (and briefly on desktop - I was curious, typical me!)

Right out of the gate I have to say that unfortunately the game just doesnt feel finished, with missing options, bugs, and a general lack of QA.

Performance was a surprise. First session was using 120Hz and 180SS, in game settings can be seen here -> https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2086495249 These were the default, everything on and set to High. The only thing I changed was "Detail Distance" from "0" to "X4"
The result was approximately 40% of my time was spent at 60fps. I found it playable, but a surprise that the game required so much power. I tried briefly on desktop, but the game would not save my resolution of 4K, sticking to 1080p. With the same settings shown, I was getting 300fps.
A second session in VR was tried using the default SS of 150%, and default in game settings. This kept me at 120fps 97% of the time. Bottom line, the game needs quite a lot of power to run, but the settings make a strong impact.
I am shocked at the CPU usage! Typical desktop gaming can see an average of 25% usage, VR 33%, VR physics heavy games in the 40%s. This game was bouncing between 50% & 80%!! Mildly OC'd 2080ti and 9700K. The store page does not have VR requirements, I think entry level hardware (GTX970/1060) will need lower settings on 1st gen hardware (*90Hz). I would recommend something stronger if you are past 1st gen HMD. As for the CPU, i7-4970K or better (Anything Ryzen5 and up)

Gameplay - The mechanics and goal of this game are good at times. Think Puzzle bobble in 3D with guns! The truth is, when I play a bad VR game I am often pining to get a review over with and turn it off, but I did find some enjoyment here, with more of a feeling of annoyance that this really could be a decent game with some more development time. As you get into the game more, you unlock more guns and you get introduced to enemies. Shooting an enemy with a like colour bullet with get you a fireball powerup that lets you destroy a bunch of orbs (or damage a boss). I am not sold on the assault rifle which just has you burn ammo firing to destroy orbs - rather than trying to match up colours to chain destroy them.

Bugs are sprinkled all around. You might aim your gun down while at the menu only to have the pointer disappear. Teleporting can lead you in get into some odd places, such as inside a structure. When I was trying this game in desktop mode it wouldnt save my resolution setting - there is no apply button, so even though it did change to 4K, as soon as I backed out of the menu it reverted to 1080p.

Other negatives include the lack of loco options. Its teleport and snap turn only. They do have quick teleport locations in levels to assist you getting around, but adding full free loco would have been so much better.
I found the gun was angled wrong, see here -> https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2086493120 Holding the gun as I would normally had the gun tilted maybe 30 degrees towards the ground.

The fact is, there is a good game in here. It might be worth checking the notes if you are reading this review at a later date for updates/patches, because if the issues I came across are fixed I would say this game should be considered and a fair price too.

Heard lots of good things from people over the years about this one and finally decided to play it recently.

I actually still remember being given the first one on floppy discs! Its a pity I didnt get into it back then because I attempted to play it 2-3 years ago and it was just feeling a bit too old at that stage. I could tell it was a good game, and probably exceptional for its age.

I didnt want history to repeat, so I started up Deus Ex: HR a few weeks ago. Initially I was going to play it in VR (VorpX), but it was being a hog to run with the proper 3D setting, so I settled on monitor. Another annoyance showed up, it really, really doesnt scale well with resolution. Folks on 1080p, or large 1440p will be ok, but small 1440p, or 4K+ will not be ideal. To see what I mean:
https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2081083245
720p - The UI is easily readable!

https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2081083638
5K - The UI around the edges is useless. The elements fixed around the edge are TINY! While oddly enough the elements in the middle are scaling appropriately.

I simply gave up on using the HUD entirely in the early stages! Later when I got the cone vision unlocked for the mini map, I dropped to 1440p so I could make it out.

Other than that, the game was feeling a bit old. The lighting, textures, sound, and pre rendered scenes all actually felt a bit older than the game is.

Thats the negative stuff done with! I actually really enjoyed this. The mix of FPS and 3rd person was interesting. I appreciated the level designs gave you different routes depending on your play style and unlocks. I liked combing areas looking for hidden parts, hacking everything, reading about the world. Skulking about and trolling enemies. The story was good, dialog had its moments, and your replies felt impactful.

If I was giving one piece of advice to someone starting this, its visit shops before your go to the main mission! Inventory is tight and you get plenty during the mission, so sell your junk, sell a bit of ammo, sell excess common weaps. Take your weapon of choice (maybe two later as you unlock more space) and just a bit of ammo. Trust you will find toys/weaps/ammo during the mission.

A quick-fire romp into the 8X's

I just randomly decided to pick something from my library and jump in. This thing was a pleasant surprise for the most part. Its a love letter to the 80s(-ish. Graphically leaning to the 90s/16-bit.) I was feeling Final Fight, Gradius, Outrun, Ninja Gaiden (maybe), and whatever the last level was inspired by I didnt play myself.

The main problem I had with it was its length. Every experience was over in a flash and it felt like I was stuck playing level 1 of everything. There are 5 levels, which you can knock out in an hour and change.

On point soundtrack, great art work, overpriced (thankfully I got it in a humble bundle.) I think Id be ok if I bought it half-off, but no more.

Consider this more of a first impressions than a full review. I would have chosen a neutral rating at this point if available, but Ive seen enough to allow a temp thumbs up, which hopefully will become clear why.

I played this on the Index HMD & controllers.

IMO it is a cardinal sin to have pop up windows or anything at all that might require the user to take off their HMD. Considering this is EA, I hope it gets changed at a later time, but upon first launch you will be greeted with a start up settings window (without notice, you will stare at a "Loading" screen in your HMD and eventually realise something isnt happening before going to your desktop - while yes you can do this inside the HMD now, there has been a bug for as long as I can remember that occasionally stops you using the cursor, and in such event you would have to remove your HMD and go back to your desk.)

Ive seen complaints of long load times. It took seconds for me, on a standard SSD.

Ive seen complaints about bad optimization. Index, 2080ti, 9700k, BEST graphical settings, SteamVR SS@200%, 120Hz -- This game ran locked to 120fps, using approx 33% GPU (clocks which are typically near 2K in most games spent most of their time here at just 1350!) CPU in expected parameters, 20%s without action 40%s with action. You should have no problem running this thing on entry level "VR ready" HW.

The controls are at times strange, at times wonky, and sometimes just wrong. I really hope this gets much more attention. In most games you would commonly have a pointer automatically and just point and trigger to select. In this game, you need to hold the trigger just to get the pointer to appear, and then squeeze the grip to select :s That would be like on a traditional pancake game, you need to HOLD A to show whats being highlighted, D-pad to move thru options, and with A still held, press X to select something. I do not understand this.
Jumping is a little odd. The game is trying something interesting, but Im not sure its quite right with this. A lot of movement is based off of press A on your right controller and sliding in a direction, then letting go of A to propel you in the other direction. This is sort of neat when you want to dash/dodge, but the same mechanic for jumping doesnt feel so good. This might be something you could get used to, I need more time with it.
Wall running. Its bad atm. In a game like Sairento, you can wallrun while looking anywhere you want (which is badass!) but in this game you need to be not only looking at the wall, but damn near clipping into it too. I actually spent several minutes in this particular spot on the tutorial, not understanding why I wasnt sticking to the wall.

Thankfully there are options for toggling run and click etc. Dont get an Index user started on "clickgate" !! The default requires you to click and keep it pressed in order to run. There is a debate over whether clicking at all is a good idea, but for me personally after 2 decades of clicking to run on a controller, I dont mind it. I do however hate having to keep it pressed, so thank you devs for that option to toggle it.

Guns were plentiful and fun. Some have attachment options, some have upgradeable stats!
https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2003971812
An option to adjust height (/offset) would be welcome. An option to move(and/or scale) the belt would also be welcome, as I kept grabbing the pickaxe I had holstered, even when I was making an extra effort to stop it from happening, it would jump into my hand.

The game definitely needs more work, but there is enough here for me to say its one to watch and altho I would rather stamp it neutral, it has to be a thumbs up. I will check in again in a few months or so and update this.

This copy was given free in the curator connect program via the VIVEVR group.
