Review bomb over, original review below:

Why a long one, or why should you care?
You probably shouldnt care too much! In fact, if you dont read past this sentence and just take 1 thing away, the best advice your going to get for some time is that you shouldnt give too much weight to any internet rando, about anything! Its not going to stop me from giving this review all the same :) As someone who played the ♥♥♥♥ out of the first HD from its launch almost a decade ago and put an unreasonable amount of hours into it, this has been my first month / 100 hrs or so of HD2.

The build up.
As soon as the game is announced I am excited and nervous. This new aspect will change some things. How will it feel, and how many times have I thought of what a sequel would be like never once deviated from the top down of the original... Still, its more HD! Should be fun ^_^

Game launch.
A rocky AF month in short. Technical problems and bugs galore (specifically the ones you cant kill with fire.) So far I have had 15 crashes. 7 server disconnects, approx 2 hours of progress rolled back, several hours of progress not awarded, and maybe 90 mins queuing to get in. Not great from that stand point.

Gameplay.
Its still HD. They have translated from top down to 3rd person well. Dropping in to a planet and guiding your pod down to the ground was genuinely awesome. Its been wild seeing the amount of videos pop up with "Wow HD2 took everyone by surprise!!" No it didnt! Tell me you didnt play the first HD without telling me you didnt play the first HD. It does go to show how many saw the top down view of the first and walked on without pause. That is your own business ofc! But dont go and say nobody saw this game coming. The chaos is still here, the blowing ♥♥♥♥ up with big call-ins is still here, and your still a fragile flesh bag now with 1,000% extra ragdolling.

Cape spinning achievement.
There is none.

Community.
Not as good as the first. Being a niche has its perks. The explosive success of HD2 means the masses are pouring in, and all that entails with it. Its still a Co-Op PvE game, and a good percent of those you play with want to enjoy the game and succeed, but poor behaviour and actions is more common than the extremely rare occurrence you found in HD1.

Performance.
Not bad, unless you find yourself on a bad login. The game has horrific anti-cheat (which doesnt seem to be stopping cheaters btw, do they ever?), however sometimes when you log in you just seem to be in a stuttering hellhole. Your frame times for reasons you cant easily see why end up bouncing up into the 100s of ms. The reason for this, I believe, is BS networking. Arrowhead have been scrambling to cope with the surge in playerbase, and it seems that on some logins you will get a dud placement. Your CPU will be cranking extra hard, but to no avail as it chokes. This seems to happen less now, but it can still happen. Logging out and trying again in a bit is about all you can do. Otherwise, its performance is fair. I still see higher powerdraw from the CPU (at least some of that is thanks to the AC), games generally range from 30-70w typical from the indie stuff to AAAs. Going over that level of power is only seen in ray/path traced titles. HD2 however has no problem pushing into triple digits!! The GPU is much more reserved, weirdly the clocks dont boost and are at HALF what you would see in even moderately demanding stuff. At 4K maxed out a 4090 capped at 90fps will draw roughly 200w (this does move about with action), but thats easy going and it does so solidly (outside of dud logins.)

Other thoughts and issues
(honestly, oouf! Lots! Ill try condense, but I got some opinions!)
  • I dont love the new currency model or the caps.
  • Ive been stuck under the terrain a few too many times, at least it can also happen to the enemies :s
  • The bug which doesnt allow you select certain weapons is annoying - you need respawn [die] to resolve it.
  • When your precious samples drop under a mob corpse it is very frustrating (can these get a bigger pickup box, PLEASE)
  • If(/when) you disconnect (from this ALWAYS ONLINE) game, there is no system in place to try give you what you would have been awarded. The first game at least tried to do this, even if it didnt always work.
  • A lack of gun upgradability is sorely missed from the first
  • I could keep going, but time is fluttering away and I need to talk about the balance patch...

And a bit of a big one now, the recent balance patch!
I really, really, dont appreciate the heavy handed and reactionary nature of this one. Blowing things up and killing is fun. When your focus is nerfing that, rather than bringing things up to give more options you are doing it wrong! The game is a bit more complex than a typical shooter, normally you aim for the head or the glowy bit, right? That exists here too, but limb health is a thing. So your natural instinct to pump the bit that doesnt appear protected with bullets is likely not the best choice, because that part of the enemy might have quite high hp. It basically all comes down to armor penetration. This is nice, but the vague gun info and absent bestiary (which the first had) will lead to either much trial and error or good old fashioned spraying and praying.

The 2 big offenders/victims of the latest patch were the Breaker primary and the Railgun support. Both popular (which automatically means they have a target on their back, coz life.) How you choose to address this and bring balance is something that should have been done with more fineness than the devs showed. The Breaker had little downside, its fair to trim that a bit - and what they did was close to what I would think is fair, I perhaps would have just teaked recoil a tad less and gone with 2 less in the clip. Anyway, it is what it is. They did buff some other primaries (thank ♥♥♥♥), which is nice but in a show that the patch in general was reactionary, only some of them got this treatment when many other needed it badly! Ofc they will say its one of many, and they are listening blah blah... We will see. The Railgun got too much of a nerf IMO. They first made it so that you have to switch modes to 'unsafe' to get the armor pen. Good. This makes sense and adds a better justification for doing so rather than just a little more damage. However, the reduction in its effectiveness went too far. Having to go 'unsafe' and having to charge the weapon a further second to get the same effect pre-patch would have been a nice place to leave it. They smashed this thing too hard with the nerf, and honestly here is where the big gulf between myself and the devs come - I want more options to blow ♥♥♥♥ up, *BUFF* the other weapons please.

Even if the mentioned items got no nerf, but the notes read that various other items were buffed. People would be trying them out, and maybe liking them more anyway! Again, I do agree these 2 items specifically were due to be brought down a peg, but the degree of which the devs went and the lack of giving more options is my concern. Time will tell I guess. I mean where is the Recoiless buff? Its comically weak. In HD1 the difference between the Recoiless and the EATs was noteworthy. Currently in HD2, you might as well just take the expendable ones.

Anyway
Its a fun game. You have probably seen plenty about in recent weeks. Ive enjoyed myself more than Ive had frustration, tho there really is/was too much of that. The game is less solo friendly than the first. You can solo, but how you do it is more limited than the HD1. The game is most definitely focused on MP. Actually in my first 30 mins of playing I came across a door which needed 2 people to open - that was a clear forewarning of what to expect. I do recommend it.

I have seen the white shadow!

I was aware of this from PS, but didnt really follow it. Having already played other Housemarque titles, I was pretty sure this was going to be solid. I was hoping it would come to PC, and here we are! It gave me everything I wanted and more.

From the soundtrack, to the menus, to the story, to the gameplay, to how it even loads! It nails almost every aspect for me. I especially appreciate capping the frame rate in menus. Menus with good descriptions, and good array of advanced options. Graphics options which describe what they do, what components they impact and to what degree, and show you them updating in real time.

The game just plays beautifully, designed to give you many adrenaline fuelled moments, it gives some challenge without being too much. On several runs I thought I was done for, chugging along in the red, edge of my seat and then you turn it around and live thru the whole act - incredible! Boss battles are works of art on their own https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2941444274

The story is quite layered. Seems simple at first, then mysterious and vague. I really admire how its drip fed to you, making you scratch your head a bit, and just when you feel you are making sense of it they go lift the curtain on another piece which changes everything.

This is also a rareish occasion that paying an actor seemed to really pay off. Your character Selene is voiced by Jane Perry (who has more VA credits than I realised) fits the role like a glove. A curious and analytical mind, who sold me on her descent into madness.

It took me about 17hrs to finished the main story, but your time will vary. The "real ending" happened for me after 43hrs.

Performance was great (with the exception of RT), tho be aware it doesnt play nice with lower/older CPUs. Stuttering can occur in those occasions. People have had some success with capping it to 60 in those scenarios. Tho high refresh is very nice for this title - but it is key to have a solid frame rate, whatever that may be. HDR is also a standout in this title, being far more impactful than RT. Speaking of RT, this can cause stutters for anyone. It seemed to go after playing for a while, but since solid frame rate was more important I spent a lot of time playing with it off. With all settings maxed, no RT, custom DLSS of 0.85 ("Ultra quality"), this thing stuck to a capped 110fps like glue (12900/4090)

I also appreciate that the DLC (incl here) ties in nicely with the main part of the game. By giving more backround to the character and her story, and on a gameplay front is a great place to permanently unlock traits on your weapons which will apply to the main game too.

There were a few things that could have been done better.

The Coop (which I didnt try) is not well implemented. As I understand it, you can only invite someone at the white orb at the start of the level, all drops are shared, and if someone disconnects they cannot rejoin. To be honest tho, I was more than happy to play this solo - it would change the vibe a lot with another player. Sounds like some fun now, but I wanted to experience this first alone.

How certain things work. Mild mechanic spoiler -> The Reconstructor (which I didnt know the name of when I first came across it) only works for that specific level. So not only are you not aware initially what it does (which np), the only way you might find out about its short comings is the hard way!

The map could be better. Identifying certain things as malignant would be nice. I would also like it if used devices icons faded out.

Limiting datacubes to only allow 1 being carried at a time seemed pointless. At least half the devices that you feed them to are in spots you can travel to/from, so all they are doing is wasting your time going back to pickup one u left behind.

Pure banger of a game. Worth every cent. HDR, great sound, DS5 controller with advanced haptics all take this thing to a new level. Very easy to play, its one of the best games Ive played in the last year. Damn near perfect.

Decent game, altho Im not sure I experienced it the way the devs might have wanted.

A little my fault, there are a few categories which you can select difficulties for and I typically leave stuff at default (medium). In this game I decided to go for 'easy' for whatever the option was for resources as I thought I didnt feel like doing any grinding. After 3 maps, coming away swimming in materials, I decided that easy was too easy! It is great that you can adjust the difficulty after starting, but even medium was too easy. It just trivialized many aspects of the game. I never had to worry about food, ammo, gear, upgrades, and barely had to wait to build anything I wanted - which meant I was getting end game stuff in very little time.

I dont know how the higher difficulties fare, but I would suggest going to at least Hard initially - you can always bring it down later.

The game is combat light (which I didnt like), and over the course of the campaign you will revisit the same half dozen or so maps. This does get tedious, and even more so in my case as I kept getting 1 particular quest offered to me over and over again. One of several bugs which took from the experience. Getting stuck in the terrain, falling under the world, crashes, and the biggest annoyance of them all - quest/dialog *stacking*

Something really bugged in my playthru, my typical session went as follows. Start up game, load into base, be greeted with the same "hallucination" which had you fixed in place (tho you could spam enter to speed it up), the camera pointing towards said event - even if it meant you staring at a door/wall! Walk towards mission start and be stopped by the radio which played 2 different pieces of dialog, be stopped by multiple people on my team because they had dialog (which I had heard over and over), sometimes more than 1 piece... so you would have the same person say "Igor, you got a minute..... <followed by their whole bit>" spam enter, and then SAME person again "Igor, I need to talk to you about something.... <followed by their another quest>" spam enter, spam enter, spam enter...............

On the plus side, its a pretty ambitious game. The world was nice looking, the story was ok, decisions did matter (double edged sword that one, as some of them had very needless extremes and it did bother me that you didnt want to say any) As an example !Story Spoiler! You are asked if you want to kill a person, or let them go. You are in a place where time basically doesnt matter.... yet you have no option to let him go - but in a week maybe after you have done what you need to do! Seems like that would be the no brainer. Of course that didnt feed into the story that follows There is a mechanic to let you revisit and alter decisions, which is nice. I like that you are given a few categories to tailor the difficulty of the game (even if it seems badly balanced at default). Altho base building is basic, thats not always a bad thing! Sometimes I dont want to engage my brain that much - so its just a nice addon here.

You could probably beat this game A LOT quicker than I did. I really combed maps initially and because of the bugs I had to replay a bunch of the same content.

Performance was ok. Game could be played at max settings, without RT at 4K on a 4090 with high refresh. RT is very demanding and not all that transformative - the base game had decent lights/shadows and typical SSR. If you wanted to use RT you basically had to use DLSS and not even quality in order to keep a good frame rate. Not worth it IMO. Also the game is over sharpened with Native + normal AA methods. I would recommend looking up DLSS tweaks to allow you either force DLAA or use a custom % DLSS.

All in all, I enjoyed it. Am a little annoyed I got that close to 100% but the thing that I was missing just wouldnt trigger and because of the mentioned bugs I just got fed up and went to the final heist as I didnt have confidence I would be able to get it to trigger.

Junk game. Dont even feel like giving a full break down, because even if some aspects got an average/above average score, its controls are so ♥♥♥♥ it completely kills the game.

I dont mean the controls are weird, or not how I would do them, or better in X game. I mean, they are pure garbage.

Bought for €1 on Fanatical (so expectations were low.) I overpaid!!

Early Access Review
After taking a break from the open world genre (mostly Ark), I got the itch once again, and after hearing so many people go on about this game I took the plunge.

I played it briefly in 2021 (a couple of hours), and didnt know what to make of it. Its a slow starter, but the world felt very lonely and I thought Id wait til I had a coop buddy before really going on. Well, earlier this year (2022) it popped back into my head and I asked a friend if they wanted to give it a try. A crazy journey lay ahead, which as I write this review had me sink over 300 hours (doing 2 playthrus) into the game - and they flew by!!

The game despite being in EA has a good amount of content and is stable. Its not completely bug free, or without its issues tho. And once you have played thru it all - you might find yourself very hungry for more content and joining the opinion of many that the devs are slow to move this forward to 1.0

All aboard the MOD train . . .
I must say that mods have played a LARGE role in my enjoyment of this game. The base game either feels poorly balanced or that the devs DGAF about your time. This community does have its fair share of purists that will bash you for not either playing the game a ton before trying them, or maybe even that you do at all o.0 Of course, the irony is that if you were to ask for a mod that takes away your minimap because you find it more immersive you will not get the same push back as if you were to ask for a mod that gives you armor slots (...yeah, there is no armor slots lol!), that is illegal in their mind!!!

Thankfully on the back of modding the ♥♥♥♥ out of Ark, I didnt waste too much time playing vanilla before diving into the healthy mod scene this game has. Simple things like auto open/close doors, speeding up farming (AoE collection/planting), giving paths speed bumps so they have a more meaningful impact and purpose, adding passive skills like building - the more you build the more hp the parts have, a build cam (SO nice), being able to craft from mats in nearby chests (SOOO nice), being able to quick stack (SOOOOOOOO nice....)... the list goes on and on (about 3 dozen mods used currently). From the simple to the major, from QoL to new content, Mods are a freaking god send and dont listen to anyone that tells you otherwise.

Graphics overhaul - So pretty!

Forget the food pyramid, you only need mods as part of a well balanced diet.

As much as this review is starting to be more about the mods than the game, I do really want to say how awesome the modders out there are. The tweakability of them, and thoughtful implementation of many are outstanding. That loot mod (which I only added on my 2nd playthru) I was afraid it would break the games progression, but its so well done I worried for nothing. By default only items you know the recipe for will drop, so you dont need to worry about leaping over content. You can adjust it so that its only things you have actually made, or go the other way and let anything drop from anything! Options are nice, and that level of control is excellent. The VR mod is S-tier, seriously. It is so good that it puts many legit VR games to shame, genuinely. The only reason I didnt play too much in VR is the performance, which shouldnt be too much of a secret that VR is tough to run, but game itself has a chunk of the blame too, so lets talk about that next.

The performance isnt great. The game could really use more optimization. I cant delve too far into it however, because I know the mods I use have an impact - and just as your mod list grows, and your base grows, and crap you drop (which lasts many hours or infinitely if its anywhere in the vicinity of things you build) and your army of tames you might have...... ooouf. Its choked by the CPU. But I do know its not all the mods fault, as even when I first installed the game and started fresh, I didnt think my FPS was great. 3090/12900k, 4K max, FPS was kinda all over the place 70-120+, on an unmodded empty world thats quite the range, and it was only downhill from there.

The actual game itself is good. Its got a good foundation. The styling works (and mods for visuals if you so please) well. It does just throw you to the wolves tho, which you may or may not like. I love it in theory, but a little bit of me wanted some more guidance. However, when you have seen it all - you do wish to have your mind wiped and the chance to start over, coz it is a great experience.

Difficulty wise, it has a bit of a rep for being hard. Its not really! I think perhaps the time consuming nature is being mixed in here a bit, but really the difficulty shows up when you go into a new area unprepared! When you find yourself in the previous biome tier gear and you dont know what to expect - deaths can and do happen! And to a painful degree if you unknowingly go into a much harder biome before you are ready. But thats about it! You will learn how to handle the new mobs, you will improve your gear, and you will enjoy crushing them when you revisit later for mats. Its the circle of life, and it rules us all... :D

The AI needs some work. Path finding for some of the mobs is excellent, and behaviours are fine - but you will find some mobs get horribly stuck even in their own specific environment. This is especially disappointing when a certain boss does this and the fight goes from epic to.... hmmmmmm...

I hope this game makes it to 1.0. The scope is crazy good, and as I briefly mentioned lol mods make it excellent fun even now. Hey devs, seriously consider incorporating some of the more creative and popular ones, it will only make the game better

Its a blast. Its rating is no accident. Cant wait for a proper content update........... .. ..... .. .

Simply put, its one of the best coop games Ive played. A pretty rare occasion that I come away thinking I really wouldnt have minded paying more (Keeping in mind I got it 60% off!)

From the name, and likely you already know, It takes two, takes two. It is splitscreen regardless of local or online, and the friend pass means you only need 1 copy to play it online.

Its a nice mix of puzzle platforming, with an approachable level of challenge to both. Neither myself, or my not-the-best coop partner, were stuck on anything for too long. Interestingly, because of our setup atm, we played without voice chat (he doesnt have a mic - ordinarily we would be in the same room - and having just moved to a new place we are not even on the same floor.) So, if we failed on a boss for eg, without saying anything to each other we just tried again and generally had figured out what went wrong, and then worked together to succeed with many 'nice!' moments.

Game ran fine, and looked very well. In fact part of what made it a blast was each location never overstayed its welcome. The environments all look top notch with great variety too.
https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2801500756
https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2801501511
And each new location was accompanied by a new gameplay mechanic to keep you engaged. On top of this, there are mini games all over the place which you can quickly revisit from the menu too once you discover them. Brilliant stuff.

The story is fine. Its about a failing marriage, which makes for a change from monsters/zombie and good v evil etc. The lead female did come across overly whiny and the child has a very punchable face IMO, but whatever! They are making this into a movie - which is neat, but I cant say Im counting down the days. Also, it was kinda funny that by the end I found their voices were so well paired with their dolls vs their real selves.

Enjoyed it from start to finish, would not have felt bad paying full price honestly. Huge thumbs up :)

Played on the Valve Index HMD/controllers.

Please note, at the time of writing this, finger tracking for the Index is not supported.

Green Hell VR is an open world survival game, ported from the flatscreen version by Publisher Incuvo (who previously ported Layers of Fear VR).

I will start with visuals and performance, as I know its a question a lot of going to be asking about. The game manages to maintain a lot of the visuals from the desktop version and is quite well optimized. That is not to say you wont need good hardware to run it maxed out. I spent a bit of time playing with settings and so forth, and this is what I have found.

Running with a 3090/12900k, Index (@90Hz) with SteamVR SS set at its default of 150%, the game needs to be toned down a bit to hold 90fps. God rays and ambient occlusion are very intensive and need to be turned off if you care about a consistent frame rate. I used 'High' res, and 'Very High' graphics, and moved up the sliders for draw/shadow distance to about 60%, this was the limit of keeping the game held at 90fps. The game wasnt terrible to play fully maxed out, as it stuck to 45fps and only certain types of movement (smooth turning) were unpleasant. And I do just mean, not terrible - so not great either - but it was better than trying to nudge up settings a little which would have my fps bouncing up and down from 45-90. As a further experiment, I found that turning AO to 'medium' while maxing out everything else allowed me to play *mostly* at 60fps (120Hz), but again, more than a few fps wobbles and Id just rather a solid FPS.

Graphics menu (and settings used for 90fps):
https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2818937399
Dont worry too much about the fact that a 3090 isnt able to play this maxed out, here is a side by side of what my 90fps settings looked like against maxed out settings - https://imgsli.com/MTExNjE3
And on a speculatory front, if the flagship (just months away) of the next gen is 60-70% faster, it will run this thing maxed out.

As far as other hardware is concerned. I think Pascal is probably not going to cut it, maybe a 1080ti with very cut down settings (incl Steam VR SS). Since Turing was only a little better, 2080/ti is it for that, again with very cut down settings. Those on a 3070 or better should be able to run the game decently from middling settings (depending on your HMD res). I know some wont be pleased with that, but thats what it is and I think its reasonable for the visuals.

Other than God rays and AO, the 'resolution' setting was the next most intensive option - so try a notch down on that if you are having performance issues.

Movement/comfort options:
https://steamproxy.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2818938524
It supports smooth loco, teleport, and has comfort dials for different movements. Nice to see this. The game can also be handily calibrated (such a simple option, why all games dont do it I dont know) from a button press (hold), to recenter you and adjust for seated play.

Sound is excellent, I had no trouble believing I was in the Amazon! Plenty of detail, from the rustling bushes to the wildlife, you felt on edge and that you-vs-nature that you want from this type of experience.

The game by all accounts seems to be an excellent port. Its content rich and those seeking a survival style game like The Forest etc will be right at home here. Im still getting into it, and should pay more attention to the prompts as I spent 10 minutes gathering palm leaves (why does a basic shelter need 26 of them and not use any other big fine leaves?! I think the devs are in bed with big Palm leaf - actually maybe even literally lol the bed also needs palm leaves) which I was dragging back 1 in each hand til I realised you could attach them together to carry ><; Also, small foul not being able to hurl a rock at a snake :(

Green Hell VR is a fun time and well worth the price of admission.

I got the game free from THIS VR curator group.

Small side note - this is the 1,000th review on the VIVE VR group! (Key obtained via this curator group)

So, I actually got a key the other day for the desktop version(thinking it was a VR key), and it was kind of ringing a bell with me but I just figured I must have seen something about the game somewhere. Turns out I had gotten a VR key last year, but never played it! So here we are!

IRON GUARD VR (Love it when the title is actually all in caps and people think Im screaming lol) has a slighty dated feel to it, I think its the voice acting and sounds that just make me think of games from 2010 or so. Despite that, the game is solid in its presentation overall. Graphically the world is adequate, with nice structures and enemy models.

Gameplay is pretty straight forward. Your left hand controls the building function, and your right hand is your ship which you use during the battle sequences to manually attack. There does appear to be some aim assist in this VR version, which I wont complain about ;p It is a slow starter, with only the most basic of attack and turret available initially. Everything else must be unlocked. There is a decent amount to unlock in the skill tree(s), of course you have a number of different turret types, upgrades for your fighter ship, as well as base defense.

Settings are minimal. There is a single graphical option, 3 audio sliders, and some movement options. The game has loco and teleport, and can be played fine while seated (tho no tweaks are given, it just works fine as is). There is no smooth turning, despite an option for it (its just snap turning, either instant or not).

Performance was a little odd. My first play session I set my refresh to 120Hz and put a small bump on SS (approx 3100x2800) with Ultra setting. With a 12900k/3090, my frame rate was all over the place, it was playable and I actually didnt know how bad the fps was until I checked the graphs afterwards (tho I could tell it was dropping frames for sure). What is strange tho is the fact that neither the CPU or GPU were being well utilised, with the instances of fps in the 60-80 region only using well under half the GPU :S I decided to fire the game up again and try a map using 90Hz and bringing down the SS to near default (about 160%), the game ran perfectly keeping 90 fps (GPU typically @58%/270w).

IRON GUARD VR is a decent TD game. Mechanically it is on the simple side, making it more preferable to newcomers to the genre. The game does have a good amount of content and is fairly priced, so even tho TD is not my favourite genre I feel this is worth the thumbs up. Also note the desktop version is due out later today, if thats your thing!
