What if guitar hero, but beetle and war drums?

Loved this. I played with keyboard, no idea how it feels on controller but would have loved to try this in VR.

I've only heard praise from one person in games media, who happens to be a lifelong drummer, and can absolutely see where that would come in handy in this game. The small uneducated amount of time I've spent banging on an e-kit had me thinking surely someone who can actually drum and is able to follow the bass rhythm while doing everything else, would probably be able to read between the lines in this games beats and rhythms and have an easier time.

I got through the first few stages fine, minimal resets, but from about stage 5 on I was constantly failing probably most if the sections. I think I had the most trouble on 5 but 6 through 9 were still fairly difficult.

For as difficult as it is, the checkpointing system really lets you quickly repeat the section if you fail, if nothing else you can master the pattern and get through it eventually. Really enjoyed this probably in large part thanks to the music, but the gameplay was simple and engaging and super satisfying to pull off.

One of my first games on PC, came with the family computer along with Starsiege and some other random software. Played the hell out of it then, beat both campaigns multiple times. Its a cool mix of FPS and RTS mechanics. The AI is pretty lacking on both sides but the singleplayer is fun enough to revisit.

Bought for under $4. Its fine. You can't 100% the Steam achievements without it. The story was less entertaining than the base game though maybe that's coupled with modern disdain with tiresome conspiracy bs. The overpowered new skills are amusing. I actually found the infamy fights to be interesting, they put up more of a consistent fight than the base game and actually are a bit of a challenge if you do them before getting the full DLC upgrade kit. Once you do its all fairly simple though.

Hate the kill x sailors missions, making you go back through the base game map locations for unmarked collectables, those sailor missions, and the damn time trials, not a lot going on there. Just the base games end game grind added into a small DLC package. End boss was interesting, actually forced you to run and heal if you took damage but with the DLC's upgrade kit you can take him down in a couple activations of the ranged ability.

Didn't hate it, but didn't find it very fun. Really only recommend if you loved every bit of the originals gameplay or if you're stuck trying to get 100% of the achievements.

The main game story is pretty amusing off the start. At first blush most things in this game look really neat and interesting, the upgrade mechanics, the GTA style infamy system and the special hunters, but as you play more everything gets less and less interesting. The combat is fairly repetitive, and while the upgrades can mix things up, I found little reason to change the shark's "build. Stuck with the Shadow upgrades all game until I needed the damage reduction, then you just put on bone and don't look back until the DLC. Within a few hours the game became more of a collectathon, move as fast as you can to get the different collectables in each area, do the arbitrary "kill x humans/fish" fight the apex that you're now overpowered for, and move on with the story.

I figured the game was short and easy enough I'd go for 100%. If you're in the same boat, get the DLC first and progress through that before doing the infamy grind, the DLC upgrades give you an overpowered ranged attack that can just melt the boats and really speed up gaining infamy.

I'd still recommend this as the main games story is fairly amusing, the game looks great besides the super boring "special" hunters. Maybe play in smaller doses and not 3 big play sessions.

First handful of hours are fantastic. The atmosphere really digs into you, the first few runs at night had me on edge thanks to the great sound design and near black nights.

Once you get further in though things settle into a fairly formulaic routine. Granted it was a routine I found fun in for those 20+ hours, but the loop stays pretty much the same throughout the remainder of the game. I only died once in the beginning after forgetting how to link the gateways to leave. Beyond that the dread that the early atmosphere was able to instill just fades and there's not really a lot of worry once you figure things out.

I still found myself enjoying most of the game and look forward to what this dev might do in the future.

Big fan of the radio selection as well!

A bit of a weird recommendation on this one. Overall I'd say I enjoyed my time with XIII even with some aspects I'd view as pretty negative.

The Positives

The game looks great still even being a decade old at this point. The cutscenes are for the most part well done and do a good job of representing the characters, both prerendered and in-game.

The world building may have been my favorite aspect of the game. The world and its lore and backstory were incredibly interesting, and while the story in general didn't quite match up to the quality and interest of the background, it did a good enough job using that background info to weave a mostly compelling narrative and plot.

The combat. This is going to show up in the negatives as well, but for the most part I enjoyed the pacing the combat provided. Being able to dodge battles and having them play out pretty quickly when you did engage helped keep the play time feeling active and flowing compared to FFX where each battle felt much slower to start and finish.

The Negatives

The combat! While I enjoyed the pacing, I felt that the combat in general was pretty lackluster as far as strategy was concerned. I didn't really do any sort of grinding or major character development until nearly 25 hours in. Up to that point each battle was basically mashing the auto-battle button to finish fights and move on. Late in the game the fights more frequently require some better usage of the paradigm system as well as more thoughtful team builds, but that's a lot of gameplay to get through to reach this point. Which leads into my other big negative.

The early game! Boy, those first 25 hours, while some interesting story developments happen and some decent buildup to what becomes of the story in the final third. You spend the vast majority of those 20 to 25 hours walking down straight corridors full of enemies to fight and a whole lot of nothing interesting going on throughout. These felt like massive slogs, and as you spend that time bouncing between characters, each portion is the same. Walk through massive set of corridors with one group, fight boss, switch to next group, do next set of corridors, boss, and eventually join up. Granted the story is pretty slow going at this point but it leads to that bit of gameplay just feeling pointlessly expansive and arduous for the sake of extending playtime. Once the story actually gets going and plot points start moving quicker, it feels like the gameplay and actual challenge start ramping up, but again that's 25 hours of playtime later, just too much.

I can't say I've ever seen people consider the dialogue in any Final Fantasy game to be a strong point, I found some of the dialogue in XIII to be just incredibly cringeworthy. It doesn't wreck the story for me but plenty of it is just eyerollingly bad. Hard to tell if it was an issue of translation or not but many sections just feel like terrible scenes from a soap opera, way overly dramatic and relying on grand messages. I came around on Snow in the end but him being Mr. Hero early on I wanted nothing to do with that goofball character.

Overall I found the final third of the game pretty enjoyable, some of the side quest bosses were interesting and more challenging than anything in the first bit of the game, the end game bosses were decently challenging if a bit BS in one aspect, looking at the final boss, no spoilers, but expect to buy some Death resistance... If you want something that feels pretty mindless for 20+ hours and gets good that far in, then enjoy! Its a tough sell because of that though and unless you are used to the high hour count these games demand, it'll be rough getting through that first portion just to get to the good parts.

Stellar experience with this game. It really shines in the early to mid game. Finding resources and scanning everything you can, finding broken pieces of equipment to then create blueprints from is a great way to encourage exploration and keep you looking in many of the different biomes.

The underwater movement is very enjoyable, the game stumbles over itself once you get on land though, and one of the vehicles that relies on walking also feels a little awkward to control when simply walking.

As far as the end game was concerned, I enjoyed the environments and biomes associated with it, but the end game goals essentially become fetch quests, again asking for you to explore and recall locations of certain plant species, but it requires a bit of backtracking to do so. They try mitigating this with some help precursor help, but its still not great.

In the end it was just a fun enjoyable experience, the game isn't perfect by any means and suffers in some areas while shining in others, but its well worth playing especially if you enjoy survival games and want a different take and different setting than many out there.
