An outstanding achievement by such a small company. A simple description is "XCOM with giant robots", but even comparing it to that beloved franchise doesn't give the whole picture of what HareBrained Schemes has accomplished in this game. The open-ended campaign is a blast, as you take up mercenary missions for whoever will pay, engage in detailed tactical combat with highly-customizable BattleMechs and salvage or buy ever better equipment and bigger war machines. Then there's the story campaign, which pulls you in and keeps you emotionally invested with every tense standoff or rewarding surprise. And the music, holy cow they really outdid themselves with the music; it gives "Space Opera" a whole new meaning. I hope they make many sequels, and with this IP there's certainly more than enough source material to keep them exploring new stories and new timelines for years to come.
