This was a negative review but it is now positive because the very first beta branch patch is amazing, bringing lots of QoL fixes that were sorely needed. Everything is not fixed, of course, but it suggests that the devs understand what they need to do to improve their game.

Have you always wanted to play a game where the consequences of your choices will always be explained AFTER ITS TOO LATE, and then when you reload you find out it wasn't a choice at all but a forced action that the game then wants you to feel guilty for taking even though you had no other option?

Everything in this game feels like a 'good idea' a brand new game developer would have without any actually enjoyable game-play. Every time I describe it conceptually, I love this game. Every time I play it I'm bored to tears immediately.

Also, the writing is just absolutely the most D- dialogue I've read in a game in a long time.

This was once a recommend and it will be again if they ever add in perks and fix the absolutely awful sieges. Never thought I'd see another franchise somehow beat Total War for having awful siege pathing.

I wish there was an option other than 'No' or 'Yes'. This game has gorgeous visuals, excellent voice acting, and a compelling drama to it that made me keep playing long after I was bored of the simplistic and stale mechanics. Which was, unfortunately, about five minutes into the game. Eventually I did give up when the game put me in the most unoriginal and tedious "sneak past patrolling guards" bit for the 3rd time in a row and I realized that I had no interest in waiting to see if they would come up with something new or interesting(using a torch to hold back darkness definitely doesn't count despite being well-visualized with rats).

The sound design works quite well, as does pretty much every part of this "game" except the game part. Which is why I wish I could pick something other than "yes" or "no". If you're looking for a visual novel or interactive movie then this game will probably scratch that itch for you. I was looking for a game and did not find it here, and so I recommend "no" for others like me despite the many fine qualities this game has.

1/10 = Garbage
5/10 = Average
10/10 = Genius

Visuals = 5/10
Mechanics - 6/10
Class Management - 7.5/10
Story - 8/10 on quality, 9/10 on detail
Progression/Difficulty - 6/10
Controls - 6/10
Satisfying Gameplay Feedback - 8/10

A less grindy(comparatively) take on the ARPG genre with more story content than most, condensed into a briefer game experience. This game will not sink endless hours like PoE or D3, doesn't have the same level of player base, and its mechanical complexity falls roughly in the middle between those two. It does play like a real RPG with story and interesting characters, however. No cutscenes, but the text that drives the story often peaks into excellence with very few immersion-breaking dips below average.

Solid example of a 4x game and easily the best 40k game since the first DoW. There are some definite balance issues between the factions at higher levels of play.

EDIT: Patches are frequent, but balance is as likely to get worse with each one as it is to get better, and many balance issues that have been in since launch have gone entirely unaddressed. I still recommend because it's a fun game until you understand it(and it's complex enough that you'll get a couple hundred hours in before you do understand it).

I love this game. Some people are upset that their cheese strats aren't working anymore so they're trying to review-bomb this game. +1 for a game that actually balances its metagame post-launch instead of letting it stagnate as a B-list multiplayer game because a portion of the fanbase are mad they can't use mindless, overpowered tactics anymore

In before I get lynched, but I was unable to enjoy this game. No, not because of the ports controls. I have a controller for my computer, so a lot of those problems weren't a huge issue. Minor annoyances included being unable to get my mouse cursor to go away, even though I was using a controller, and the lack of Fullscreen Windowed mode which is a really basic game feature in this day and age. But, like I said, these are minor. Hardly enough to derail any game that is otherwise enjoyable.

My real issue with the game was the game itself. I'm sure plenty of people will insist that I'm a casual, or that I didn't play the game enough, and maybe they're right. But here's my experience with Dark Souls...

The low lighting, strange textures, and brutal motionblur(which you will experience constantly because standing still is for very dead people) all combined to make my eyes ache within minutes of starting the game up. As you get used to it, the feeling fades into a minor behind-your-eyes ache that's a tiny and ignorable discomfort, but... The fact that it only hurts a little to look at this game in motion is not a selling point.

The lore is interesting enough, I suppose, if a bit... anime-ish. Mythological creatures are introduced, fancy names are dropped, and a bare-bones history of the world is introduced to prop up your starting area. It's decent enough, as these things go, but doesn't give much grounding for why I should care about moving forward other than "because it's my fate". Cliche dying character bestowing a prophecy and cryptic advice to send me on my way, never seen that before. It all gets the job done, and I've definitely seen worse. Once more, not a selling point, but hardly game-breaking.

Tutorials are next to nonexistant. There is some basic info about which buttons do what, but under no circumstances should I have to go to a third-party website to discover what a basic game mechanic is, and that's exactly what Dark Souls made me do several times. This annoyance is made more egregious by the previously mentioned lack of Fullscreen Windowed mode, as the game tries to crash my computer every time I alt-tab to discovered how bleed mechanics work, or decide I want to know what the effects of "Humanity" are. Don't even get me started on how useless the class descriptions are when you're trying to pick which one for your first character. I don't need to know everything, but picking my class is going to dictate a lot of how I experience the early challenges and even a minimal description of the difference between a Warrior and a Knight would have been nice. (Saying that the Knight has more armor is laughably useless information to a newbie.)

See all that up there? Those are minor gripes. They're not fun, but they're hardly going to ruin a game that is otherwise enjoyable. And, honestly, I was relatively enjoying Dark Souls for the first hour. Making me Wiki stuff might not be my idea of fun, but the game has an immersive aesthetic and the immediate brutality where it unapologetically gives you the D for having the raw audacity to try and play it without already knowing all the tricks its going to pull is strangely charming. Dying isn't generally an enjoyable result in a video game, but Dark Souls made me appreciate it. Over. And over. And over. Until I learned not to be such a dumbass. And boy did those early victories taste sweeter because of how many times I died first.

But(and, oh man, is this the Kim Kardashian of buts), once I stopped being truly terrible at the game,(don't get me wrong, I was still bad, just not hilariously so) I started noticing that animations didn't really match hitboxes all the time. Giant mace coming for my face? Ha, dodged you! Oh, wait, I guess the dust cloud from the mace also does damage to me? Fine, fine, I thought, I'm used to weird AoE effects in other games, I'll just work around it. But it's a consistent issue with enemy after enemy and attack after attack. I'm sure that serious Dark Souls players know where the actual hitboxes are for attacks because they've played the game a bunch, and knowing about these hidden hitboxes and avoiding them is obviously enjoyable for some people, but I find myself increasingly frustrated when I'm dodging attacks(I took video of playing the game and replayed some fights in slow motion to make sure it wasn't just my crap reflexes) and I'm still getting hit.

There is a difference between a game being hard, and a game being unfair. A hard game requires split second timing to dodge an attack, so only skilled or lucky players will be able to do so. Dark Souls requires not only split second timing, but also knowledge that the visual animation of the attack DOES NOT always match where the attack will actually hit. I'm sure I could "git gud" and memorized all the innaccurate attack animations and their real effects, but after my seventh or eighth time dying to a sword swing that never touched my character model, or an explosion that visually ended about 3-4 in-game feet away from my character, I tossed the controller onto my couch and uninstalled.

There's a lot to be enjoyed about Dark Souls, from it's quirky atmosphere to its ruthlessness. But not the desync between animations and hitboxes. That was ♥♥♥♥♥♥. It's not all the time, but it's often enough to render the game unenjoyable for me. All my other complaints are minor, but that one is a deal-breaker. Too bad, I would have liked to see more of the cool boss design.

Once upon a time a time this was a long and relatively upbeat positive review. But the lack of support for this game, dishonesty by the developers, and outright lies about "fixed" bugs in their infrequent patch notes is frankly disgusting. The Civ franchise is nothing but a cash-grab these days, and I'm sad to see it go.

There's nothing I can tell you about this game that the other reviews haven't already covered but I'll go ahead and summarize the salient points. It's a lovely game made somewhat intimidating to new players by it's grotesquely long list of DLC. I'll say what others have said; wishlist this game and wait for the inevitable 75% off sales that role around three or four times a year for Paradox games. Then gobble them all up because this game is easily worth it for the time you'll spend playing it.

Other than that, my playtime speaks for itself. Totally a worthwhile buy, even if you don't get the DLC.
