My expectations for Remember Me were lower than how I ended up feeling about it. I completely forgot that this same dev developed Life Is Strange and is working on the upcoming Vampyr.

From other reviews, my expectations were that the story, gameplay, and design choices weren't that great. In my opinion, I think the story is ambitious and, in many ways, unique. While the combat is certainly repetitive, the story is in no way generic. The idea of a mega corporation controlling peoples' memories by altering the bad ones in order to preserve happiness is a bizarre concept. And the fallout of it makes sense as it crosses so many laws of reality. It's hard to talk about the story without spoiling anything, but Nilin, the protagonist, is an "errorist" and a memory hunter. She ends up finding it to be her goal to put an end to the corporation that has caused so much damage to society with their inhumane treatment of both patients and prisoners. By the end, I was actually impressed with the overall story and direction of it.

What makes the combat unique is the complete lack of weaponry for Nilin and the abilities she possesses in terms of hand to hand combat and the technical abilities she has as an errorist. She can cause glitches in robots, turn invisible, etc. While this combat system is different, it does become repitive rather quickly as there isn't much variance in the enemies and the enemies are incredibly predictable, making fighting a bit easy.

While I love the world design of Neo-Paris in 2084, the level design is only okay. There are eight chapters in the game and a lot of them revisit the same places, making it feel reptitive. The only difference in the locations you come back to is that they might be destroyed. And despite being set in Paris, the game didn't feel like Paris at all, aside from some of the first few chapters where you do walk through the "St. Michel" district. The rest of the game is set in slum, a futuristic version of Bastille, various futuristic buildings, technical labs and biological labs, etc. The backdrop of Neo-Paris really only serves as that, a back-drop.

I will say that the music, voice acting and writing, cut scene direction, and the animation in this game are incredible. The music especially.

Overall, this game was pretty good. The only downsides really were some of the level designs and the combat, which was often times repetitive. And those two do take up a lot when it comes to video games.

If you like the other Batman: Arkham games, you'll certainly enjoy Origins.

For starters, my expectations weren't as high as the reviews weren't as high as either Asylum or City. But I was really impressed with how strong the story is, specifically with the bond Batman and The Joker share and how the similarities between the two are explored. The development and admiration Batman and Gordon have for each other is also explored, as it starts with Gordon having serious disdain for Batman. I think the only weak point might be some of the assassins/super villains in that are introduced from the Blagckgate Prison breakout and aren't utilized as well. They're introduced as part of the story, so you'd think they'd be part of the main story. There's also a huge array of characters in the game.

The assassins include Killer Croc, Deathstroke, Firefly, Copperhead, Deadshot, Electrocutioner, Lady Shiva, and Bane. Of those, I would say Deathstroke, Firefly and Bane were used in the best way possible. The rest either don't add much to the story, or you rather hunt them down in various side quests. And as far as the side quests go, there are a lot. You ultimately end up taking down most of the villains in side quests after they serve their role in the main story. I can understand some of the reasoning for that, as it is an open world game. But making it optional seems like something Batman wouldn't do.

I will say that the game runs really well. The graphics are really great. The music and original score is a highlight, especially with the orchestral Christmas themes that mix in with the stylistic Batman music. Using snow was a really interesting game design choice, but I'm glad they did it, it lets the world look really interesting. The expanded Gotham City from Arkham City is also great as glding around can be rather enjoyful. The direction in the cutscenes is also something I noticed to be incredible, they're very cinematic, well animated and acted. The voice acting is amazing from Troy Baker, he does a great Joker. Overall, I really enjoyed this game.

Modern Warfare 3 concludes the Modern Warfare trilogy and it really comes to a crazy explosive ending. Your favorite characters come and go, the Russian tensions with the US finally lead things into a massive world war, WWIII, and the Yankees and the SAS (Task Force 141) are here to save things. It's pretty much what you'd expect if you'd played the first two.

Set immediately after MW2 where Soap is injured and needs to be evacuated, you primarily play as Yuri, a former Spetsnaz that's associated with Nikola and cooperates with Price and Soap as he has a grudge against Makarov, and Frost, an American that's part of Operation Kingfish and the Metal 0-1 team. The missions range from in your face action to some forms of quick paced stealth, as they were in the prior games. The world is in turmoil due to the aftermath of the bomb that went off in Paris and the Russian invasion. The Ultranationalist Russians are setting off chemical attacks too and end up taking the Russian president hostage. This leads the Delta Force team, Metal, and the Task Force team to cooperate with each other as they're in different locations in Europe to track down different targets that'll lead them to Makarov and the Russian president. Locations include NYC, London, Paris, Prague, Siberia, Berlin, Hamburg, somewhere in northern India, Somalia, and Dubai.

Being that it's the Call of Duty games, the gameplay is incredibly well developed, it's well optimized, it still looks quite good for being a game from 2011, the audio design is pretty great, the music might be a bit much (hint to developers: sometimes less action music is better), and the voice acting is solid. I didn't even realize the top notch cast they got too, Timothy Olyphant, Idris Elba, and William Fitchner play some of the Delta Force ops, while Kevin McKidd and Billy Murray return for Soap and Price.

Overall, it's a pretty good game. I didn't try out the multiplayer, but I'm sure it's pretty great.

Mafia II is pretty great. For starters, the story is incredibly well written. I'd expect it to be considering how well written the first game was. It plays like a crime novel and the cut scenes are incredibly cinematic in the sense that they feel like cut scenes from a Scorsese film. And for the time, the graphics were pretty tight. It has a few shortcomings, mainly with the open world aspect of the game.

Mafia II is a sequel to the first one, but the location, cast of characters, and timeline is evidently different. Instead of Lost Heaven, the sequel takes place in Empire Bay, which is clearly heavily influenced by New York City. The Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Brooklyn Bridge, and a version of Central Park all make appearances. And the rest of the map has influences from the rest of Manhattan, parts of what are likely New Jersey and probably Long Island. I really liked the map and when you're not on a mission, you are able to drive around and check it out. But that is only interesting for such a period of time. Because aside from the main story, there isn't anything else to do, unless you like drinking at bars alone, going to a gun store, going to a clothing store, or scrapping or porting out cars. Those are the only other "activities", so it makes the world feel kind of dull.

The story revolves around Vito Scaletta, an Italian who recently served in WWII in Italy, discharged after being injured in battle. He had joined the Army instead of going to jail after being arrested for a botched robbery. When he returns from the war, he ends up reconnecting with his childhood friend and fellow delinquent, Joe Barbaro, who's involved with some Mafia types. Joe introduces Vito to some of the gang members and Vito takes on some jobs with him. The game takes place at first in 1943 and 1945, but that's just the first few chapters. (Spoilers) Vito is sent to jail after a ration stamp heist and the game skips ahead to 1951. Vito and Joe work for a few different families but their story ultimately goes awol. It's really great.

If there's one thing this game really nailed, it's the music selection on the radio stations.

Great story, great music, great direction, great world, but a serious lack of activities.

Assassin's Creed Rogue was pretty good. I actually liked it more than I was expecting to. And I think that is largely because of the varying ways you can explore the world. I can't say if I liked it more than Unity or not, as the story is pretty short. If you're not doing any of the side content, naval missions, running around and clearing areas of Assassin gangs, the story could probably be beat in just under six hours. But because it's just like the more recent Assassin's Creed gangs, where there's various side quests and all of this exploring and collecting treasures, you can spend a lot of time playing this game. I got to the point where I did tire myself from constantly going from location to location, collecting treasures, sea shanty lyrics, prosperity (raises your income), renovating buildings, treasure maps, and I think it's because they tried to fill in as much as they could. It just got repetitive after a while. It would have been nice if Ubisoft actually utilized all of these locations they'd made for the seperate worlds instead of just throwing them there and adding all of these collectables. Outside of the main story, some of these locations are completely pointless and don't require a second visit. That's my main issue with this game, the surmounting amount of locations that are ultimately irrelevant.

The story is pretty good. I liked it. I liked the different perspective of how treacherous the Assassins can be, how they'll want to stop the Templars by any means, and to secure the precursor items even if it means destroying a city. That's how Shay Cormac ends up betraying the Assassins; after he's sent to Lisbon to acquire a precursor box, the great Lisbon earthquake of 1751 happens, and the destruction is similar to how it actually did happen in real life. The entire city's infrastructure is destroyed and lopsided, and it angers Shay. After being shot in the back by his fellow Assassins, he falls off a cliff and is left for dead. But the Templars save him and nurture him back to health. Although the Templars can be ruthless, it shows that they do show sympathy and empathy. The story is also great as it covers, at least it tries to cover, the French-Indian War of the 1750's. They could have done a better job of referring to some of the missions and campaigns though. If you do take over the number of forts in the North Atlantic and the River Valley, then you do get a perspective of how it was mostly a naval war, but defeating those forts is pretty much optional. The main story doesn't require it. Still, I did nearly everything, defeated every fort, went to every viewpoint.

The world's design, well, I have complaints. The north Atlantic is okay. They at least tried to design Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, and the southern shore of Quebec, and the various small islands in the area. But it's scaled down so much and the only relevant areas are, more or less, Halifax, St. John's, and Anticosti, plus some of the wilderness areas. It's not and the area is quite big in terms of square miles, not as big as the West Indies in Black Flag, obviously, but still kind of big. The textures are nice. I definitely liked the weather system. It was a lot better than the River Valley area, which was my biggest complaint in this game. I don't know who laid out that area, but they should be fired. I've never seen something so dumb. It's a stupid combustion of river valley land in a square, that ranges from Mount Vernon, Virginia, to southern Quebec. None of that makes sense. Mount Vernon is directly west of Sleepy Hollow, NY. And Sleepy Hollow is basically just west-south-west of Albany, NY. Who designed this? I live not to far from the Genesee river and have explored most of its length and I can tell you that the Genesee region shown in the game looks nothing like how it should. There are high mountains in what should be the Catskills, but the Catskills look nothing like how they do in the game. Hell, they threw in some landmarks on some made up geography in scattered locations, some of them cities that aren't accurate to history, and called it a day. This is basically the opposite of what Ubisoft does for their other games. They've at least attempted to treat cities with some historical accuracy. What they did in the River Valley was a joke. It's not like the story in the River Valley part was bad, just awful design.

Overall, this game was good, but not great. 7.9/10

Dishonored 2 is a great sequel to what was my personal favorite in 2012.

It takes place several years after the first game and Emily Kaldwin is the Empress of the Isles. Her father, Corvo, the player character in the first game, continues his role as Royal Protector. Dunwall has prospered under her reign, however, a serial killer with the name "Crown Killer" has been brutally murdering critics of Emily, leading many to believe her and her father are the culprit. During a ceremony celebrating Jessmine's life, Emily's mother, a witch by the name of Delilah Copperspoon and the Duke of Serkonos, Luca Abele, barge in and Delilah claims to be Jessamine's older sister and the rightful heir to the throne. The coup is successful and, depending on who you decide to play as, either Corvo or Emily are turned to stone. I chose to play as Emily.

Emily escapes her house arrest and flees Dunwall on a ship with Meagan Foster, heading south to Karnaca in the Serkonos region. It is here that Emily will find out and get to the bottom of who the Crown Killer is, who is behind the conspiracy to usurp her leadership.

It's a classic stealth game with an incredibly developed world and lore to go with it. The graphics are generally great, the world design of the buildings are classically Victorian. The somewhat steampunk/industrialist technology continues, especially with Jindosh's home. It's just a great game really. Depending on what choices you make, the game's ending can also be drastically different.

I will say that PC performance can vary. I turned off v-sync in game and opted to use AMD driver's v-sync. I also turned off Bloom in game as it just wasn't that great and really detered performance at some points. Otherwise, I hadn't had too many issues.

I really liked Far Cry 3. For a while, I didn't think it would be better than Far Cry 2, which I thought was better than the first one. And I think some aspects of Far Cry 3 are better, specifically the crafting, the strongholds you can take over, and some of the characters. But what separates the two is the fact that this story centers on Jason Brody and his friends as he tries to save them, while Far Cry 2 is about accepting a job to assassinate someone whom you basically play cat and mouse with. And the cat and mouse aspect allured me in. While Jason Brody and his friends made the mistake of trusting someone who tricked them in to sky diving to Rook Islands, in terms of real life, the whole thing could have been avoided.

Still, the game has a strong story and strong character development for the protagonist. Jason Brody starts the game as an innocent (maybe not innocent, but not violent) 24 year old from California, and after he escapes from Vaas, a drug runner and slave trader, after watching his older brother get murdered, Brody ends up becoming a warrior of the Rakyat. The game plays like the first two Far Cry games in terms of the driving and shooting. But the mission layouts are different in that you take missions from a few different main characters that direct you to your friends as you try to rescue them. And as you eventually do, they take notice to the changes that Jason is going through. They can tell he's become a killer, but still human. Anyway, the game has a strong story and without going into details, it can be pretty surreal, especially when you meet Citra.

There are plenty of side missions that involve turning on radio towers that'll unlock more content on the map, hunting animals, killing specific people, random NPC story missions, poker games, races, basically Ubisoft made this into a big action adventure open world game while keeping it a solid first person shooter. It works well.

Great game. 9.2/10

Overall, I liked The Walking Dead: Season 2. I have my criticisms, of course, but Telltale's main thing to boast is with their stories and the characters in them. In the second game of Telltale's take of The Walking Dead universe, you play as Clementine, the little girl who grew attached to Lee in the first game.

Taking place some time after the events of the first game, you're with Christa and Omid, who are still alive. That changes soon, of course, or at well, 16 months later after the incident in the bathroom. You end up with a new crew after running away from a group of attackers. The new crew live in a secluded cabin and aren't sure about you. There's immediate trust and mistrust. But you become attached to these characters as events unfold. You learn about their lives and why they're out there. My favorite of these characters was Luke, whom I'm sure most people agree was the central character and could be the next Lee.

Unfortunately, reality kicks in and you're forced to flee with the group. Basically, they're on the run from Michael Madsen. You eventually reach a lodge after some other unfortunate events and here's where you reunite with Kenny. This is where the heart of the story starts to take place. Clem and Kenny go back a long ways and you have to pick sides. Kenny seems unstable, but Clem is usually able to calm him down. You also have to see things from his point of view, he's a protector and he's caring, and he's selfless. He butts heads with a few other characters further into the game, of which I won't get into for the sake of spoilers. But he still has a big heart in the treacherous world. The other major character that you get to know is Jane. She's introduced after the events at the lodge, but she comes off as the big sister type. But she's also a loner and a bit manipulative. I really liked both Kenny and Jane in this game, so trying to ease tension between them was tough and it does affect a lot of the dialog.

But here's where my criticisms start. While the dialog can be affected, it doesn't change the outcome of most of the scenarios. Telltale's one boast that choices matter, well they don't. Choices ultimately don't matter. The story will still unfold with the same arc. It's just a matter of whether or not a character will die a certain way or how people react to Clem, or how Clem reacts to certain characters. The only major outcome is the final two choices. But if you've gotten to season 3, you'll see that the final two choices also don't really matter. The only thing that matters is if you feel satisfied with your interpretation of the story.

My other criticisms are typical of Telltale. For starters, their engine sucks. For producing licensed products and publishing the games themselves, you'd think they'd be able to spend more money developing a better engine with a better lighting system. I don't mind some of the stylistic choices in order to preserve the comic book feel, but at least give an attempt to make a realistic beard or mustache that isn't just a painted texture. Like Kenny's mustache, it's not great. The animation, while some of the cutscenes are pretty good, a chunk of it is just bad. Like, worse than some stuff I've done. Watching how some of the characters rotate to turn and face someone, or walk, or breathe, you can tell they rushed the animation and didn't bother with polishing it up. It's just so clunky. The fighting and QTE system is fine though.

But yeah, great story, all the feels. Excellent music and voice acting too.

Assassin's Creed: Unity, now, is a pretty good game. I recall when it first came out the number of issues it had. After five patches and a free DLC, I think Ubisoft was satisfied considering the debacle. When it first came out, it was "unplayable", as in the frame rates were incredibly low and there were bugs everywhere. Now, the frame rates are fine. The game is playable, that's for certain. However, there are still issues. The first issue you'll likely notice is the atrocious LOD (Level of Detail) for distant buildings. Basically, the textures and details on distant buildings are incredibly flat. There's also the matter of random NPC's having their outfits change sporadically at times. I tried to not let that deter me as I did enjoy the story and the abundance of side missions available in the game. But it's noticable enough that you have that instinct feeling that Ubisoft gave up on this game after it came out. The executives clearly didn't care enough about delaying the game as 3D programmers could have worked another six months to work on it and polish these issues. But, you know, they gotta get that money$$$.

On the other hand, Unity has a great story. I mean, I'm basically a sucker for the Assassin's Creed games and stories as I really enjoy the historical aspects and exploration of historical cities. Paris is absolutly beautiful, and when you're up close to some of these buildings, you have to respect the attention to detail. Notre Dame is massive as are the other notable landmarks.

The story involves Arno Dorian in a sort of pseudo revenge story. In the beginning of the game, spoilers, his father is assinated by a Templar. But it's not him you're avenging, as you don't really know much about who assassinated him. It's your adoptive father you avenge. Francois De La Serre. Francois took Arno in after the assassination of Arno's father, and you also grow up and fall in love with Elise, Francois' daughter. She knows all about the Templars and Assassins as Francois is a Templar himself. Basically, there's turmoil within the Templar Order, and after breaking out of prison, Arno was blamed for Francois' death, Arno ultimately works with the Assassins to figure out what's going on. You ultimately allign with Elise as, deep down, she knows you didn't kill her father.

It's a great story that did get some comparisons to AC: II, but I felt that it was unique on its own. The DLC, Dead Kings, was okay, but some of the ghost stuff felt a bit off. I just wish the bugs and random issues were resolved.
