I've never seen so many people stab themselves dramatically.

It's (very obviously) a love letter to Chrono Trigger. It innovates enough, gameplay-wise to keep things fresh. That said, there are a lot of areas where you'll fight the same enemy pack 3-4 times and it's functionally no different to the other times you fought that encounter, which makes some areas feel like a slog. In terms of QoL it has basically taken every really obnoxious bit of game design from the 90's era JRPGs and cleaned it up.

The story is pretty fun by way of being completely ridiculous while still taking itself mostly seriously. Despite the game's generally upbeat and comedic tone (again, think Chrono Trigger), it gets so ridiculously dark out of the blue at certain points that it, honestly, comes across as funny. As I led off with, lots of dramatic suicides by stabbing. It is pretty well written and the characters are mostly fun. The overarching story is fairly neat with some neat twists. The game definitely benefits from a second playthrough in that regard. That said, the game reeaaally drags out those twists.

The score is both mediocre and far too small for the length of the game. It definitely needed more variety.

Overall, I definitely enjoyed it. I played through it twice, the second time getting all achievements, etc. If you grew up playing 90's Square games, it's a pretty faithful homage to them while both not completely aping them nor choosing to replicate all the bad design decisions they made back then.

Wow, they're still honestly trying to pass the piece of crap off as a game? Do not buy.
