Having played the original and beaten this, here's what the entire game boils down to:

- Find yourself in an area, move about while killing groups of enemies until you find a button/switch that needs to be pressed to open a door, lift a crane, or toggle power to a piece of machinery;
- Destroy 1-3 waves of enemies so that said switch becomes "operable" and press it;
- Get presented with a few seconds of story dialogue, move to another area, repeat.

Boss fights are: evade attacks of the invincible boss while killing random adds, shoot one of the "highlighed/weakened" body parts of the boss, repeat 5+ times.

Positive:
1. Dececent graphics and smooth performance;
2. About 20min of comic book-like cutscenes between missions to support the story;
3. Fast-paced action.

Negative:
1. Linear level design, levels look like they offer more freedom than they actually do;
2. Oversized weapon models and mostly uninspired weapons (weapon modifications);
3. Unrewarding secrets that do not really offer anything except adding a bit more ingame currency to buy weapon modifications (unless i missed some easter-eggs);
4. Poor variety of enemies;
5. Relatively easy boss fights, usually preceeded by more difficult waves of stronger regular enemies.

Probably the best game dev sim currently available, although lacking some quality of life features.

It's an alright game with repetitive combat, it falls short of UFO, FTL and other game it's being comapred to. It lacks a lot of "Quality of life" features and any considerable depth.
Wait until it receives further update or grab it with a large discount on one of the upcoming sales, but for now stick with FTL.
