Remnant II is a really good sequel and a really good Souls-like game that emphasizes co-op play!

Remnant II is basically Dark Souls, but with heavy focus on ranged, gun-based combat. There is close combat with melee weapons as well, but it is not very useful in every situation or boss fight.

The co-op in this game is amazing, just like in the first Remnant. It has a much better co-op system than Dark Souls. You can play up to 3 players in a party. If you plan on playing through the whole game with a couple of friends, you don’t have to replay every area and boss for the other player in their own world in order to progress and keep playing together, like you have to do in Dark Souls. You can do everything in the worlds of your friends that you can do in your own. Like upgrading your gear, rest at checkpoints together, fast travel, you name it. You even share all loot, so if your friend picks up gear and other stuff, you will also get it! You can stay in your friends game as long as you want to, you don’t get automatically thrown out after you have killed a boss together like in Dark Souls.

This game does not have New Game+. Instead you can reroll your campaign with new areas and bosses. This will reroll every world in the campaign though. However, you can also play something called Adventure Mode. Here you can choose one of the worlds you want to reroll and play again, with randomized areas and bosses for that world. This way you can easier farm specific items, weapons or traits that you are looking for. You also get to choose which difficulty to play at when rerolling a world; Survivor, Veteran, Nightmare or Apocalypse. However, right now you can only reroll 3 of the 5 worlds in Adventure Mode. The 2 worlds that you can't play in Adventure Mode are The Labyrinth and Root Earth. The Labyrinth makes a comeback from the first game, but this time it's a little bit bigger and has enemies and a couple of bosses. The Labyrinth and Root Earth are always the same with the same bosses, items etc. I hope they change that in the future, because Root Earth is kinda cool and has amazing boss fights. Too bad you have to play through the entire campaign again just to play Root Earth again, since Root Earth is the last world.

The story was very bland and uninteresting in the first game, so I did not care much about it. Same goes for Remnant II.

And now some of the major changes and improvements compared to the first game.

Co-Op play.
The Co-Op play is the same as in the first game, with one improvement. When someone joins your game in Remnant II they spawn right next to you. You don't have to run back or to the next world stone to make them spawn!

The map.
Every world consists of several areas. On the map in the first game you could only see the area that you are currently in. You could not do much with the map except seeing where you have been and where your friends are. If you open up the map in the Overworld (between dungeons) and want to know which entrance is which and which exit is which, you could not see that on the map. You had to go back into the dungeon in order to see which dungeon it is, which was a bit annoying. This is not the case anymore! You could not interact much with the map, but now you can. You can turn the map in all directions to see different floors, hover over things with the mouse cursor to see what they are, like dungeons, world stones, etc.

The inventory.
Your inventory is still endless and can’t really become full. This can still be a bit annoying as you still don’t have a stash where you can put things you don’t need at the moment. The layout for the inventory/equipment screen is slightly different and better now though. But I would still like to have a stash. It’s just nice to have the option of putting things in a stash that you don't need at the moment and don’t want to throw away either, because you might wanna use it later on.

Archetypes, Traits and XP.
In the first Remnant, there were only 3 classes to choose from. In Remnant II, you now choose between different Archetypes (classes), a total of 11, but not all are available from the start. Some of them are very hidden and secretive. Each Archetype has unique Skills, Traits, Perks, Prime Perks and more. You choose not just one Archetype, but 2! However, the Archetype in your second slot will not have the benefit of its Prime Perk.

In the first game you got a Trait Point every time you leveled up, or if you found a Tome of Knowledge, where the max lvl was 1000, which is 1000 Trait Points. In Remnant II you can only get Trait Points from killing bosses, Aberrations (mini bosses) and if you find a Tome of Knowledge, each giving one Trait Point. Now you only get 65 Trait Points as a maximum, so you have to think about where you want to put the points when you build your character. You can no longer max all Traits like in the first game. You can use an Orb of Undoing later if you want, to reset all Trait Points.

The XP you get from killing enemies now goes to your Archetypes instead. Max lvl for each Archetype is 10. There are 3 different skills to choose from in each Archetype. You start with the first skill, the second unlocks at lvl 5, and the third unlocks at lvl 10.

Enemies & Bosses.
The enemy variety is good. There are Elite enemies in this game as well, which also has a good variety. The boss fights are more fun and more complex in this game than in the first, which is really good.

The World.
The environment is beautiful and varied, just like in the first game. It feels like this game has a bit more variety on the level generation, but I’m not sure. There are 5 very different worlds in total. After you have completed the campaign/story, you have only killed about a third or half of all the bosses. I just wish that they add Root Earth to Adventure Mode in a future update.

Weapons, Mods, Mutators, Relics & Loadouts.
The weapons and weapon mods are a lot of fun and there are many to choose from. There are many new weapons and new mods, and many weapons and a few mods make a comeback from the first game, which is nice. In this game there are also Mutators. Mutators are a specific type of item with the unique ability to enhance your Weapons significantly. They introduce additional stats or passive abilities that can bolster your arsenal, making them a valuable asset in your journey. Weapons have one mod slot and one mutator slot.

Your primary consumable for healing in the first game was your Dragon Heart. In this game the Dragon Heart still exists, but it belongs to a category of Relics this time. You can say that Relics are different versions of the Dragon Heart. Relics has limited number of charges that are used to heal players, as well as granting different bonuses. Some Relics can provide bursts of healing, other heals over time, or it is even possible to receive some bonuses when activating them, like increasing your damage dealt.

Also, they just added loadouts in the latest patch, so it's much easier to switch between different builds! The loadouts include weapons, mods, mutators, archetypes, skills, relics, and fragments. Additionally, loadouts will save and recall Traits, but will only recall them if you have the Orb of Undoing in your inventory.

One last thing.
There is just one thing that I did not like in Remnant II, and that is that there are a lot of places where you can fall to your death, which was a bit annoying at times. However, after a while you learn where those dangerous holes are, so it's just a minor thing. I also want them to add more worlds to play in Adventure Mode in the future, like some DLC's! That's it!

The Verdict.
All and all, Remnant II is a fantastic game that I strongly recommend. Especially if you are looking for a game to play in co-op with some friends! 4.5/5.
