the final bossfight sours the entire experience:

1) for some reason, the "spirits summoned" sound effect plays about 100x louder than any other sound effect in the entire game -- when that sound effect is just a wretched "SKREE", the result is not unlike trying to operate a power tool next to your (unprotected) ear. I chose to take off my headphones halfway through the bossfight. In a series that's lauded for its soundtrack, this is particularly unacceptable.

2) the bossfight combat loop consists of: wait for green eye flash -> shoot -> hammer -> weapon cycle -> wait for guy to summon puppies so you can kill them and recharge the hammer -> repeat. The fact that there are two "wait" steps there, and both of them are triggered at random, means that you're going to spend an awful lot of time shuffling around waiting for him to *allow* you to proceed. It's like if the marauder did his eyes-flash-green shtick ten times less often, and you needed to do it 10-15 times, and you also don't have anything else interesting to do in the meantime.

3) the arena for the final fight is a circle with no distinguishing features. So was the arena for the Gladiator fight, but at least that boss wasn't a boring pain in the ass.

The rest of the dlc was (mostly) fine, but the final fight just represents a clear and profound lack of understanding of what makes these games fun to play.

It's like Left 4 Dead but they took out all the interesting gameplay elements and replaced them with working netcode.

So... it's an improvement?
