Not super inspired, but you can do a lot worse than Flying Medievil Mega Man.

As with all JRPGs, it runs twice as long as it should, but still fun. I would love to have been at the pitch meeting where they couldn't decide if the bad guy should be Angel-Hitler trying to hypnotise the world or Elf-Malcom X trying to save his sister, so they just did both.

I love the premise, the visuals, the character design, the sex-positive-while-not-exploitative lead. The problems are that the game is hard enough not to be fun, and the control scheme seems deliberately obtuse.

I don't know what the fanboys are complaining about. This is one of the best games ever made, and now I have it on my computer.

It's Mega Man X as a roguelike: Kill bosses, steal their powers, bite off more than you can chew, die horribly, repeat.

FFX still everything I loved and hated when first I played it - great story, simple combat with rock hard boss battles, too much emphasis on minigames.

FFX-2 may indulge in some of the ickier aspects of anime (there's a hotspring episode, for God's sake) but the gameplay is good, and it really hammers home that Yuna is a teenager trying to find her way in a new world.

I found Last Mission to actually be the most fun in the moment to moment gameplay, and again I found that it had some surprisingly deep things to say about growing up and growing apart from old friends.

A mashup of Zelda and God of War, without the charm of the former or the scale of the latter.

What else needs to be said? Easy enough to jump into, hard enough to lose yourself in. It's Sid Meier.

Playing this game is basically like owning a succulent: just check in on it. Like, ever. And you're winning. There's nothing like coming home after a long day at work and discovering that you can level up your entire party.
