Top-notch character design carries this one.

Legendary and absolutely mogs the remake.

Updating this after giving it more time: it's actually not even close to RE4, unfortunately.
Most bosses are garbage both in terms of design and mechanics, level design and art design are some of the worst I have ever seen. Most levels are literally corridors or military hangars - the first village chapter is the only inspired one. I don't know how they could have downgraded level design so much after amazing and iconic RE4 while having infinitely more power to work with.

The story is very mid overall but having Jill and Wesker it's worth playing through once. The character performances are nowhere near RE4 level with only Wesker carrying that one all by himself.

The gameplay is a clunky mess. I still couldn't get used to it after hours trying. Mind you I'm someone who thinks RE4 controls are perfection. This doesn't have the same fluidity. You feel heavy, immobile and clunky. Real time inventory is not Resident Evil and never will be. The only good thing about the gameplay is the expanded melee system which was introduced in RE4.

Replacing merchant with a menu is another ridiculous design choice.

Overall I didn't enjoy my story playthrough at all, unfortunately.

Good game but a terrible RE2make. Character writing and personalization is some of the worst in Resident Evil.

Gameplay, world design and art design are amazing. Character writing took a big hit compared to the original game.
