The recommendation is a very qualified "yes".

On its own, this game is a very ambitious attempt to combine light RTS, RPG, and base-building elements into one giant sandbox of fun. It succeeds often. It's also very outdated, buggy, and generally a huge mess. It is brutally difficult (unless you learn popular cheesing strats), but incredibly rewarding to persevering players. The tone and style of the game are unique and palpable, the atmosphere set by the music, weather, and architecture is brilliant, and the overall execution of the ideal - when it works - creates an experience you really can't get anywhere else.

Enter mods. As with Bethesda games, the real game is in the mod setup. There are so many to choose from, and many of them fix long-standing issues, or circumvent them entirely, while others add variety, flavor, or complete overhauls. The modding community is fractured, but well-established, and as long as you stay away from commenting (or learn to read the room), your experience will likely be just fine. Be aware that there are more than a few "parlor" mod authors (as opposed to "cathedral" authors) for this game who rule over fiefdoms of their own creation, and your opinion is very unwelcome in their spaces. You've been warned.

My time in this game has been very enjoyable, but I have a very thick skin for loss. Whether it be the loss of a beloved character, the loss of a base established too early in too hostile of territory, or the loss of a save file due to some manner of whoopsie (mine, the devs, or a mod author's), I typically ride it out with no more than a resigned sigh. If you have a tendency to get very attached, the game might not be for you. If you're not interested in ever seeing a dev tool, the game might not be for you. If you're wary of modding, the game might not be for you. All of these are "might" and not "will", because who knows; maybe the issues are below your threshold.

Kenshi 2 development has been announced, and the game will likely exceed the original in every way, since the devs have learned a ton from the first game's development and maintenance, and have taken a fair bit of fan feedback to heart. It might behoove you to wait; however, I've not felt the need to hold off new playthrough ideas when the itch needs scratching.
