UPDATED 10/15/2024

After putting a few hundred hours into the game I have decided to change my recommendation. The first update for the game was already using already existing assets in the game and was nothing new. The focus of the development team seems to be skins that are mostly oversexualized and/or just bad. If you like repetitive boring content and you are a gooner then then this game is for you. If not then i would just play something else.

Original Review Below....

If your burned out with games like Warframe, Destiny 2, or the Division 2. Then this is a good game to play to fill that looter shooter void. It's free to play which is a plus. Everything can be earned in the game and nothing is forced to be purchased.

The upgrading for characters and weapons is similar to Warframe. So if you are familiar with Warframe's modding system this will not be difficult to figure out.

The micro transaction are a bit more expensive than Warframe, if you compare the same type of things like mod polarities and such.

The gun play is a bit more like Division 2 without the heavy bullet sponge feel, well the bosses can feel kinda spongy. The mobility in the game is better than Division 2 though.

So I think this game does a good job trying to balance things out in comparison to other games in the genre.

Time will tell where this game ends up....most of its competitors had rough starts and grew into good games. So I am hopeful that this game grows and develops in a similar direction.

So I put in another 36 hours or so and I have decided to change to recommending the game. But I would only play on a private server. The game needs some balancing of weapons a bit yet and armor still feels like it needs to be more useful. But I have found exploring the map and hunting in this game is quite enjoyable. I look forward to the developers working out the kinks and a few balance passes. And I do like the concept of playing many different tribesman over the course of the game. It keeps things interesting.

Original Review Below....
I can't recommend the game in it's current state unless your playing on a private server, where you can change a bunch of things that are just ridiculous in design. First problem is durability....weapons and armor wear out way to fast. If your going into a large dungeon you probably should bring a extra weapon and maybe even armor. Tools durability for companions are next level insane. You have a fairly large camp with a few harvesters and the likes and Bam! Guess what sometime overnight they broke every tool they had plus all the tools in storage. So first thing you get to do when you get back online is waste 30 mins to a hour fixing tools. Next we have the animal pens that consume way too much food. Another annoyance that wastes time is crafting excessive amounts of food and making sure if actually gets into the feed troughs cause sometime the guy in charge of feeding your animals is stuck or too busy dancing. Next we have patrols and the wall you hit in the mid game. So you want to move out of the rain forest area and into the hills or somewhere like that right? Well you have two options....waste all your time hauling resources to your new base there, taming new recruits to gather all the time cause the local wildlife kills all your guards and harvesters or babysit the whole base and never leave. Perhaps a single guard on a patrol might be ok in the beginner areas, but in the more difficult areas we need to be able to assign a group of guys to move as a group together. And I am not going to waste more time setting up patrols for every single guard....needs to be streamlined and need patrol groups not individual guards. Also weapons need re-balanced. Armor need to mitigate damage a bit more. Horse mounting and dismounting need to be reworked or there needs to be quick dismount for when you get jumped. I should be able to look back on a mount and see what is still chasing me or if anything is, but current controls do not allow that. And stopping at the wrong time to look will get you killed. The game is ridiculously too grindy....to the point most players have resorted to afk crafting to level. I mean hey if you want players logged in, but not really playing your game...you have succeeded. Ok whats next....losing all progress on tribesman even if they are saved in the stone tablet machine is just stupid. So I capture and tame say a ...level 25 tribesman. I spend the next 2 days or so level up there proficiencies and I get caught in a fight i cant win. I go back to the tablet and go to remodel the saved tribesman to find out they are back and the level and state when i first tamed them. Well there is 2 days wasted. I could list more issues with the game, but this post is getting a bit long. I just mentioned my biggest issues with the game in its current state. So basically here's what it comes down to...Unless you love grindy games and the constant chance of losing your character progression. Don't play anywhere but on a private server with tool durability turned off, perfect remodelling turned on and a bunch of other settings. I was playing on a PVE server, I don't even want to know the hell that playing on a pvp server would bring. My advice to the dev's.....Keep up the good work, Fix the problems you have now and build a solid foundation before adding to it. Don't make mistake like the dev's that made Ark Survival did. Fix the consumption rates on animals, durability of weapons and tools. Tweak the AI tribesmen so they are just a bit smarter. Make armor feel like it actually protects you a bit, if you cant dodge. Make perfect remodeling the standard. Maybe tweak some of the special attacks on some weapons, so they actually feel like they are special. And for the love, do something usefull with our base tribesman besides sit there in a vegetative state not contributing or doing anything at all. That's all I have to say for now, I am sure there is more...I just can't think of it right now. Looking forward to the changes in this game and changing this review to recommended when things get better.

If you like games like this then it's a nice addition to the genre. I find the game getting better with each update. My only problem with the game is the DLC's. They seem a bit pricey for the added content and or added feature's that should be in the base game.(Warlords) I wouldn't buy the DLC's unless they are on sale or if you have no problem supporting the development team.

I wish I could give this game a positive review, but I can't. I enjoy the fallout franchise in general and there is plenty to do in this game as far as content. But the underlying annoyance of inventory management at every turn, wasting my valuable play time has gotten old. My guess is that of the 252 hours that I put into this game as of this review, I bet more than half that time was wasted trying to organize the tiny amount of inventory and bank space they do give you. Mind you I also had the 1st subscription that also give you a scrap storage and a ammo storage that are both unlimited. I have no idea how anyone can plan this game without those items to be honest. To have to pay a subscription for a game so your not annoyed with inventory space is bad design. Perhaps I am a hoarder in games like these, but I am sick a tired of game developers using inventory management as a key element in the content of their games. Hence when I see a game wasting my time with UN-FUN things like inventory management I always will write a bad reviews. Stop wasting my time organizing things and let me play the game.

So I payed $30 for a DLC that I have yet to even be able to experience. The cues for most the servers are ridiculous. This is just poor deployment of a update without infrastructure to support it. Everyone should just boycott this game and send this developer a real message about bad business practices like this. I can't even refund the DLC because it literally said it was a non refundable purchase. Which seems like a scam to me. Amazon Games just burned another bridge with me and will not be receiving any money for anything ever again.

Updated....

I had to change my review to negative. While I tried to give Bethesda the benefit of the doubt and hope that they just launched a half baked product like most game developers do these days. I had hopes they might fix the problems with this game. But I fear that the problems with this game are core problems and cannot be fixed. The loading screens ruin any immersion, the story lines are marginally interesting. There is no replay-ability in this game at all. The new game plus is so redundant that I just gave up trying to unlock all the powers to their max and truth be told most the powers are useless or uninteresting. The concept of unlock other abilities and skills for different dialog on play throughs is next to pointless and really adds nothing new to the game except for some extra dialog with conversations with npc's. So procedural generated planets are just boring and there should have been more variations with the customs POI that are generated within the planetary playfields. I really can't believe they spent years developing this as the next big franchise for them, when there really is nothing there besides some generic content. Another reviewer said it best with "Starfield is a mile wide and a inch deep"....Nothing rings more truly after putting hundreds of hours into this game and looking for something that I thought was there, but just isn't.

Original Review -

I think the game is a nice addition to a long line of games in the general genre. I think most people are trying to compare it to No Man's Sky or Elite: Dangerous or perhaps games that are not even near completion (Star Citizen). But each of those games does certain things very well. If you just play Starfield and take it for what it is and stop complaining about what it isn't. You will enjoy it. I don't think Starfield really brings anything new to these kind of games, but its a new world to explore and that's good enough. I don't understand all the technical issues and bugs that I hear about. I don't have a top end machine and I have had no problems in 80 hours of game play. So to say the game is buggy from my perceptive is incorrect. I'll just assume people are playing on machine's not designed for gaming or some machine from the late 90's. Oh.. I can say do not install it on anything less than a SSD drive or you will probably have all kinds of problems. Without being long winded about my thought of the game....It's basically not the worst or the best but falls at about a solid 7/10. After the modding community works their magic I am sure it will be a 8 or 9. I think everyone that loves the idea of space exploration and starship's should at least try the game and make up their own mind.
