Judgment: 95/100
  • An excellent cooperative objective based shooter with tremendous replay value. The developers' ongoing commitment to providing regular content updates is commendable.
  • Without question, a full price game. A must have for those who enjoy cooperative shooters.
Objective Pros:
  • The game's engaging blend of cooperative gameplay, procedurally generated environments, and challenging missions provides a consistently enjoyable experience.
  • In-game progression feels tangible; along with the progression of your skills as a player.
  • Cooperative play with friends is one of the most enjoyable video game experiences I have ever had.
  • Procedural generation of maps and challenges adds tremendous replay value.
  • The developers are consistently adding new gameplay content for FREE.
  • Art direction, technical graphics, audio, and music are all excellent.
Objective Cons:
  • Despite procedural generation, the game can start to feel stale, but this after MANY hours of enjoyment. This also doesn’t stop you from coming back after a break and having the game still feel great.
  • (Minor) Solo play, while possible, is significantly less enjoyable than both online with friends and strangers. This is made less significant by how easy it is to play with friends and strangers.
  • (Minor): Rare bugs and glitches. These have been stamped out at the time of writing but were present in the early builds of the full release.
Personal Pros:
  • The setting is unique and intriguing.
  • Community is largely helpful and friendly.
Personal Cons:
  • While the game's progression system is initially rewarding, it could benefit from additional incentives to maintain player interest in the long term.
Story/Setting:
There really isn’t much of a story, but certainly a light narrative that keeps you curious. The setting is the real star, with a unique take on a spacefaring civilization. You are simply miners working for a mega corporation, mining a hostile planet of its valuable resources. The “story” of why you are there, and what makes the planet so hostile gets some hints, but a lot is left to the imagination, in a good way.. It’s a game where the story doesn’t matter as much as the setting, and the setting is excellent.
Presentation:
Visually, it’s not a technical marvel. However, it nails the important components, especially the lighting. Sound and music are top notch, along with some of the best voice lines in gaming.
Gameplay:
At its core, Deep Rock Galactic is a cooperative objective centric first person shooter. The weapons and other equipment are all unique to each of the 4 in game classes. Each class has a specific role to play. Cooperating with your teammates to use your unique weapons and equipment is the key to success. Missions are randomly created, and rotated. Your only choices are the difficulty, and which randomly created mission you want to play.. The missions you embark on have great pacing. Slower segments involving exploration and mining, and these are interjected by frantic fights against the locals, as well as mission specific objectives. Effective team play is rewarded, while running off solo is punished. Missions grant rewards, which are then used to progress your characters. This is all done via a space station hub, where you can tweak your character, choose missions, and engage in other shenanigans. Overall, the gameplay hits the right balance of easy to pick up, but difficult to master. Everything is explained clearly and concisely in game, so there is no need to do outside research. There is an emphasis on creativity on how you build out your character before a mission, encouraging you to experiment with different builds. My only gripe is the absence of some sort of shooting range in the central hub to test your loadouts.
Value and Replayability:
Value here is top tier thanks to the high replayability. You might do the same mission types, but the variables that get modified (the environment, difficulty, your class, procedural generation, etc.) make it a new experience every time. On top of this, the developers introduce new gear, missions, enemies, and other items nearly twice a year, all for free.
Multiplayer:
While you can certainly play solo, the game is multiplayer only in the cooperative sense. End mission stats give you a means of comparing your performance to your teammates, but nothing more.
DLC/Paid Content:
DLC does exist, but purely in the form of cosmetics. This is how DLC should be done. Mods also exist, for those who want even more variety.
