10/6/2024: Despite my cynicism toward Bloober for their past games combined with my adoration of the original Silent Hill 2, this 2024 Remake is doing a lot right to keep me engaged and interested in what's been recreated as well as added or changed...but I have to point out that the current state has some really rough dips in performance, where the game dropped from 50-60FPS to an unplayable sub 20. Really hoping the devs can fix these issues since I'm happily proven wrong about them getting this remake right.

One of the most terrifying and fascinating survival horror games I've played in years.

As a long-time fan of the Silent Hill and Resident Evil franchises, as well as games like Condemned: Criminal Origins, Alien: Isolation, and Murder House, I've gotten really tired of the trend of modern horror games in which you simply run and hide from antagonists that look like people in Halloween costumes, often with a pretty weak narrative that usually demonizes the mentally ill and offers little to no satisfying game mechanics.

Lost in Vivo plays much like a first-person Silent Hill in contrast, forcing you to explore horrific, claustrophobic levels in a downward spiral and fight for your life against various grotesque creatures that should not exist with limited ammunition while solving some simple but interesting puzzles and riddles and experiencing really clever twists on how a standard game would progress (no spoilers but your inventory is used in a very unique way at some points.) Visuals combine more primitive graphics reminiscent of the PS1 era horror titles but with modern touches like reflective surfaces and dynamic lighting. The sound design is equally impressive, filling the air with screeching and grating while you're in peril, and soothing music when you finally have a moment of peace.

The sense of dread is choking but the draw of your own curiosity may be enough to push you through the nightmare like it did me. There are even multiple endings and a handful of mini-games that play differently from the main game to keep you coming for more.

Best of all, this is all in search of your service dog. Dani deserves your help.

An intense and fast-paced action game that reminds me more of Ninja Gaiden on the original Xbox than it does Dark Souls. I do wish there were multiple save slots though, seeing as there's no multiplayer to justify that not being a thing this time. Pretty good performance on my GTX 1660 Ti and i7-4790K with Maximum graphics settings, but some moments do see the usual 60FPS drop down to 50's and even 40's depending on the effects going on (especially one of the late-game boss fights.)

Manages to combine the intense first-person combat of "Condemned: Criminal Origins" with the resource management, intriguing puzzle design and crazy horror + science fiction themes of traditional "Resident Evil" all with a setting new to the RE series: the Bakers' plantation, set in a fictional city of the southern Louisiana, complete with swamps and barns.

Gameplay is a mixture of isolated exploration, crafting ammunition or useful drugs like medication or psychostimulants to highlight items, figuring out puzzles such as rotating objects to cast a specific shape of shadow, and of course fighting back against hideous creatures with your various weapons, generally with less ammunition than you'd feel comfortable with in those situations. Yet the game (at least on Normal difficulty) still feels fair, as you have a very effective block that absorbs most enemy damage, as well as a quick crouch for attacks that are aimed at your upper torso. There were still a few times where I wasn't sure how to avoid damage, but not nearly enough to create frustration.

This game knows how to keep surprising you throughout its generally 7-10 hour campaign (unless you speedrun.) The story is well fleshed out with memorable characters and moments that will stick with you long after the credits roll, and the Bakers' estate feels like a tribute to the original Resident Evil game's Spencer Mansion: an area you'll be exploring for the majority of the game, with various parts locked until you find the right items to gain access. There's even a recreation of the shotgun puzzle from the first game.

The few criticisms I have of the game spur from the sort of rushed sensation the game goes through toward the end, with an unclear point of no return, as well as an ending that feels a bit incomplete. Still, this is a journey worth experiencing, and the cast definitely earn their place among such series manstays as Jill Valentine and Albert Wesker. Of the "Resident Evil" games I've so far completed, which includes REmake, 4, 5, 6, Revelations, and now this title, Resident Evil 7 stands as my second favorite...just because "Resident Evil 4" is literally perfect.

I gave them 33 hours of my time and over $30 of my money, and now they're spitting in the faces of everyone who played their game by locking content behind microtransactions, as if the dozens of pieces of overpriced DLC and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ mechanics like taking forever to drill vaults and grinding to have any decent abilities and lazy shooting mechanics and poor animations and bad damage balancing wasn't bad enough.

The best Alien (read: "Alien", not "Aliens") game I've ever played, and a great survival horror game in its own right. It beautifully emulates that retro low-tech future aesthetic from the original film while adding in great additions like the Working Joes and a crafting system that isn't annoying. The ending is a disappointment, but that's only after an engaging 15+ campaign.

It's the Dante and Vergil I actually want, in an expanded version of a game I already love.

There are five full playable characters (original version had two), each with vastly different playstyles, and each with a few different costumes.

Having just played and finished another playthrough of Devil May Cry 4 on PS3, which still looks great to this day, the Special Edition really improves on those graphics with better textures and effects.

The gamepad support is impeccable, and even includes fully remappable controls for the game (not including menus.)

Issues that were present in the original version still stand however, being the backtracking and somewhat frustrating dice sections. They did improve the speed though, by making characters run sooner than they originally did.

This and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance stand as the best character action games you can get on Steam.

Easily one of the best strategy games I've ever played. Instantly addicting, with satisfying victories and heartbreaking defeats from every battle. You'll learn from each encounter and be forced to adapt to new strategies as you and your enemies both develop into stronger forces. I recommend starting on Classic difficulty (or higher) to really get the best strategic experience.
