Fantastic addition to the AC:RPG games, but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ do I resent the fact you have to still use Ubisoft Connect. It's a horrendous platform that continuously logs me out without retaining my log-in details.

Wasn't able to play the game.

I was able to boot it up and select a map tile, but as soon as I selected an HQ i wasn't able to progress. The only thing I could interact with was the ESC key and the menus that brought up. Looking at the command log, there appeared to be a failure with a transmission script.

Did a full file verification and a full reinstall with the same effect. I wasn't able to locate anyone else reporting the same problem. I issued a couple of bug reports and have requested a refund - I will potentially revisit this game in the future once it is stabilised.

The game design is phenomenal in that it looks and feels like a WH40K universe should. The sound design is second to none from the thumping choir beats to the mob cues that are ridiculously accurate in their audio location. The gunplay is surprisingly fun albeit limiting as not every gun is equal. At it's base, this is a very satisfying game.

Why don't I recommend it at this moment in time?

The people running the show do not demonstrate any care to connect with their consumer base. Fatshark have lied consistently about what will be available on release and refuse to provide a time-line for updates and as a result the game feels half-complete with no signposting as to when it's going to be more complete. Regrettably this has meant that while the core content is fun, it is very short-lived and the game play loop gets repetitive very quickly.

A huge point of chagrin for the community just now is the cosmetic shop which includes items paid for with real money. *THAT* appears to be very fleshed out and through data-mining appears to have a robust back-catalogue waiting to be released - so it's hard not to assume that Fatshark have a very clear vision for the direction of the game. I am in no way against a real-cash cosmetic shop HOWEVER when it is clear that this is the most complete portion of the content you can't help but feel utter disdain for Fatshark's priorities.

I am hoping against hope that the game will turn itself around and deliver the bare minimum level of content because it is a genuinely enjoyable game only run by some exceptionally inadequate frontmen.

Edit: As of 28th January 2023 this review has not changed.

Edit2: As of 1st March 2023 I've amended my review from negative to positive.

FatShark have finally released a substantial patch that addresses numerous accessibility issues such as crafting and blessing management. There are still other things to tackle such as resource acquiring but overall the gameplay has become considerably more satisfying.

Not to mention the music still absolutely thumps.

Edit: November 30th 2024
This game has been a long, laborious effort but they're finally getting there. It's far more well rounded with a considerably improved gear and penance system. Cash shop is still aggressively recycled kit but can't have it all. Would recommend this game.

Visually this game is much the same as it's predecessors, meaning it runs pretty damn slick and looks consistent.

Game-play is solid - some interesting mechanics from each of the classes.

Story is... abysmal. The dialogue isn't much better. A victim of their own success, Gearbox made Handsome Jack such a perfect villain that it was always going to be difficult to match him - but the Calypso Twins are god-awful. While I understand that the goal was to tap into the twitch-zeitgeist, it only comes across as obnoxious and falls far short of the mark.

My biggest grievance though is throughout the story the Twins speak out against you as the "Vault Thief" but when it comes to critical cinematics involving other characters that you are absolutely present for, you are completely irrelevant and wholly ignored. There were at least two major events in-cinematic that could have been handled very differently were the player character acknowledged and instead we get some exceptionally ♥♥♥♥♥♥ storytelling, including the loss of a major character from a previous title.

My only reprieve was I first played through as Zane and the majority of chuckles I got were from his dialogue and reactions. I also enjoyed playing as Fl4k for his very dry sense of humour reminiscent of KOTOR's "Die, meatbag".

Of all the DLCs, Love and Tentacles is by far the strongest and I'd even go as far as to say it's superior to the base game in as far as storytelling goes. Wholly revolving around returning characters like Hammerlock and Gaige, of all the DLCs it's the one I enjoyed replaying.

It's a reasonable addition to the franchise though I'd recommend only picking it up at a discounted price.

Of note: BE AWARE OF THE DLC CONTENT. For whatever reason the pricing is incredibly predatory in that a lot of the cosmetics packs are INCLUDED in the Season Passes. To give you an example, each final form skin is 4 x £7.99 but the Season Pass includes ALL of them, PLUS campaigns and is £23.99.

This game is hard. It took me 3 attempts across the space of a year and a half to get into this game without despairing.

Is it souls-like? To an extent. You will die a lot and you will die easily. Even basic mobs are unforgiving and will punish you if you misstep.

Are the mechanics complex? Yes. Very. They are complex, thorough and absolutely overwhelming and new things get thrown at you throughout the game.

Do I recommend it? Absolutely.

When I first saw this game on release I was drawn in by the character customisation and the art-style in general, because it looks pretty damn cool and beautiful all at once. The mechanics are robust and will make you feel like an idiot to begin with because there's that much to learn - but know this, you do NOT need to learn it all in one go.

Once you get relatively good at some basics like blocking, dodging and using the ki-pulse to get your stamina back up, you'll get through some of the early content. After a few stages you'll get more comfortable with your chosen weapon and the moves available with it. A few more and you'll be experimenting with stances. There will be regular mobs that will kill you endlessly, never mind bosses, but once you work out their patterns and move sets you learn what to expect and it'll become second nature.

I'm 141 hours in, feeling like I've barely scratched the surface of this game and i'm still getting plastered on the walls by the bosses. There are episodes where I have to turn the game off and walk away but the satisfaction of FINALLY getting that boss down is an actual sense of achievement and you'll find yourself punching the air and telling it to f*ck right off.

I chose a light weight build that relies heavily on dodges and quick blocks so if I get my timing off I'm dead in a matter of hits. But if I get it right and those dodges and blocks land just perfectly and I can get that counter in, I tell you what it feels damn cinematic at times.

I would recommend this game to anyone but even a Souls veteran is going to get caught very off guard by what Nioh 2 presents to them. Enjoy!

I love this game so much that it terrifies me to pick it up and play it. If I start to play I know that the days and nights will blend together and before I know it i'm attempting to skin my neighbours to make a hat.

Knew the ghost was upstairs somewhere. Took the voice box with me and asked if anyone was there.

The word "Behind" crackles through.

I NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE down the stairs, back to the van and out of the game.

Not sure what all the complaints are regarding the game crashing and bugging out. I've had no issues whatsoever and I'm running on a rig that's maybe just a little above average. My specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790K
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1070
SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 250GB
SSD: Samsung 850 Evo 500GB
HDD: WD Blue 1TB (2012)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600 C9 2x8GB
MBD: Asus H97-PLUS

Sitting at the moment with almost 7 hours playtime and had zero issues running on high settings with textures and models tweaked to ultra. No choppiness and no frame-rate issues.

On to the game itself:

I don't own a playstation and for the most part it's never bothered me not having one. However - Horizon Zero Dawn has ALWAYS been a bone of contention for me (Ghost of Tsushima also, as of late). Did I hesitate even briefly to hit that preorder button when I saw it was coming to steam? NOPE.

Absolutely not disappointed.

Visually it's stunning. The world around you is well built and beautiful. The robots integrate into it fantastically. So far the story has been really engaging and keeping me keenly interested.

Not much else to say. I'm going back to get stuck in.

10/10

I've wanted to play this series for a long, long time. I'm glad it finally came to PC because it did not disappoint.

If you enjoyed The Witcher 3 you will enjoy Red Dead 2. It stylishly takes it's time to world build and really draws you in to the characters, pulling you in so deep as to connect with them on an emotional level. You will celebrate, you will smile, you will cry and you will want to murder the sh*tfire out of some folk, I promise you that.

When I say the world building is done stylishly - it comes across like reading a book. Action sequences are glorious and never tedious, but there are also long scenes of exposition. There are events that simply involve you riding your horse and cart across rolling hills while indulging in conversation with another character. You will sit at a campfire and unholster your woes. You'll literally build a house from the foundation up. This game takes it's time but it is glorious for it.

The scenery is utterly stunning - there are occasions when you're riding over the plains or hoofing up the side of a snowy mountain where you'll find yourself beset upon by the kind of panorama we can only dream of having in our stories. The wildlife is also robust, diverse and very much alive. Until you decide you need it's pelt anyways.

From a technical point of view - I have never had any issues running the game or playing in story mode. Never has it crashed on me or has the launcher caused me any problems. I am by no means running a beast of a machine but very much a mid-range set up and I've had no glitches or strenuous load times.

I have however two gripes - Online mode will occasionally bug out with an infinite loading screen. Everyone gets it and apparently the devs are aware of it. It's annoying when it happens as you have to kill the process in the task manager to get out of it. This bug however has NEVER occurred in story mode.

My second gripe is that this game's story broke my heart. Which isn't a real gripe. It's powerful and I want to thank Rockstar for bringing me along for the journey.

This breaks my heart to write.

I loved the Darksiders game when it first came out. Played it to death and back (pun not intended) and then again some. To me it was like reliving my childhood years on the N64 playing Zelda - similar dynamic with combat and puzzles, well balanced, with an element of free-reign exploration.

I waited for years for Darksiders 2 to come out - and it didn't disappoint. I really enjoyed the RPG elements like gear swapping and deciding whether you're a caster or melee dps. It was just a generally well refined game - smooth in every sense.

Darksiders 3 is kind of like those games. But it really kind of isn't. The world building is there - I can't fault that and I love the continuing artistic vibe that runs through the series, 10/10 for that. And Fury's design as well is just brilliant. I like how unique each of the horsemen are and how their "iconography" is built into their character and armour design. Her whip is also pretty sweet, though combat is fairly simplified.

But combat...Combat being a pretty robust part of this game and it's predecessors. Combat is absolutely infuriating in this version of Darksiders and I can't get why they've gotten it so wrong.

The targetting system is a nightmare - you're as well just ignoring it, if not for the fact Fury's most effective dodge is while targetting a mob. But while targetting you've absolutely no idea what else is happening in the environment. And other than bosses, you will rarely be facing just ONE enemy - you'll target one and have two more completely offscreen, charging up attacks and smacking you without you having the faintest inkling.

And while I mention dodge... dear God the dodge mechanic is broken as hell. Mid attack and the big bad takes a swipe at you? Good luck dodging before your attack animation is finished. And Fury has some pretty lengthy attack animations. For some reason, unlike Death and to an extent War, THQ have decided you cannot cancel Fury's animations mid-swing to dodge. Dare I say it's almost Dark Souls-esque that you have to time your dodge to get the maximum effect.

I don't want to play Dark Souls. I want to play Darksiders.

Also you get a refillable flask. With a lengthy animation. That gets you killed half the time trying to heal. Sound familiar?

AND THE TRAVELLING. MY GOD THE TRAVELLING. I've been fighting a boss now where every time it murderstomps me I'm having to walk the equivelant of a country mile to recollect my lost souls. Again that sounds crazy familiar.

THQ what the F*** have you done? Give me back my Gothic Zelda Murderfest! Your world building in this series is amazing and I love the story but you've annihilated the core mechanics!
