I probably paid somewhere around $10 for this game when it was actively being worked on. It was one of the first early access games that I purchased and my friend and I had a blast killing dinosaurs. You used to be able to purchase vehicles as well as weapons. For whatever reason they took out the vehicle purchasing building. There are still vehicles, but they are spread out across the map in little outpost like areas. You could say it makes it more challenging. I would say it takes away a bit of the tactical choices and freedom of playing the game the way you like. When I played the community wasn't huge, but usually saw a pretty high uptick in players when it went on sale. There are a lot worse games for $0.99 or less. I would recommend this game, if you you have a friend that would like to blow away a bunch of dinosaurs with you. Well worth the $0.99.

Fun Arcade Style scrolling Fighter Plane Game. Best Played with a Friend. You can customize your fighter between levels with the points you earn. You also unlock weapon slots as you level up. Played with a friend pretty much 3 hours straight the first night and nearly unlocked all of the weapon slots. That really opens you up to tweaking your build to what works for you. The way it was designed you just about have to switch to some skirmish games between some of the campaign levels. You will find you just need a bit more points to unlock some things, so you can make it through the next campaign level. You have to complete a level to actually earn points to buy things, but you get to keep your experience. The game play is fairly fast paced compared to a classic like 1942.

Current Review:
I recently go back to playing Starbound after it left Early Access and they have done a great job. There's a story, quests, side quests, you can build your own bases and Now you can build your own Space Station! I look forward to playing many more hours of Starbound. :-)

Early Access Review:
I have enjoyed my experience playing Starbound. They have an interesting spin on the sandbox genre and they keep adding more stuff. There are a ton of awesome things they could do with this game. It does feel unfinished / unpolished, but it's currently in Early Access, so that's somewhat to be expected. Hopefully they end up making this game as addictive as Terraria has been for me.

1.0: Wow, they made it! I was beginning to wonder, if they'd ever officially get to 1.0. While $44.99 is a bit on the "expensive" side for a game. In the event that you play it to death like I've done, you would be getting a super good deal. This is one of my most played games and I've kept coming back for a new release. It's so much better with friends, but just hopping on a PvE multiplayer server is a lot of fun as well. While you can play singleplayer and that's an extremely awesome thing that you can do. The best fun that will keep you going in the long run is playing with other people who enjoy playing. The game is more polished than ever and while some things could be better, they've done a pretty good job. Now, if they'd just add a bit more to the quests/storylines/things to do other than just killing zombies. Also, would be super awesome, if they added some of the nice features that you get with the 3rd party bots that you see on a bunch of multiplayer servers. (In-game shortcuts for warping to places, etc., especially home is super convenient!)
A21: A++ Things are just generally getting better. Though, they keep overhauling the skills/books/etc. Nice that they added a new quest type and a difficulty tier to trader quests. I've played pretty much every update since A11, going on 8 years ago. Bring a friend and enjoy. Definitely helps to split the skill responsibilities with a friend as well.
A19 Update: LL Cool J, Cool. Looking Better than Ever. Loving the new build!
A17 Experimental update: Looking better than ever with the updated engine. POIs are like mini dungeons now and they've introduced actual quests. Still can use a lot of work, especially what with all the bugs for the new release, but it's been a blast so far. Haven't even gotten to the new vehicles, but am having lots of fun. Have to rethink base design with the updated Zombie AI that aims for your weak points, Doors and / or poorer quality construction.
A16 update: Sleeper Zombies are awesome. Generally, you're seeing the Zs get up instead of popping into existence and in the case of POIs you can take out some or all of the Zs in a house, before they get up. You just have to be silent about doing it. Generally, that means headshot with an arrow. A17 still feels like forever and a day away, but hopefully should be coming out any time now. One can almost forgive the extreme delay with the upgrade to the game engine, but we'll see how the new update works.
Updated Review: (A15?) The game is still in Alpha, but there are no more Hornets or Pigs. However, they have added Boars, Vultures, Wolves, Dire Wolves, and Snakes. They've also done significant work on the Zombie Models and have implemented the Hot/Cold environmental effects. Now, your Snow base, Desert Base, etc. will each have their own conditions that you have to survive. The skills have had a huge overhaul, challenges ("quests"), and Treasure Maps are in as well as random NPC Trading Posts. You can sell some stuff to the Trader and buy things from him. The trader isn't essential to the game, but can be useful. Please note, the Trader kicks you out at Night Time (You get warped outside). The trader takes those gold coins / tokens as currency. I would recommend this game even more than before and hope they continue to add awesome stuff in the future. :-) Seriously, I would love some "real quests", actually camps of NPCs, roving bands, bandits, Traveling Traders, the possibilities are endless! Who knows how much more energy is left in 7DTDs engine, but here's hoping, they continue to deliver awesome updates. Almost forgot about the sleeper zombie system! Now, POIs should have zombies that "wake up" when you get nearby, instead of just straight up spawning behind you. There may still be some of that, but it's a lot less noticeable. :-)

I really don't get the people whining about how they lost their base due to the new patch A11, A12, whatever. The Game is in Early Access, the Developers are churning out Awesome content, and there are xml files that you can use to tweak the game in just about any way you want. Servers can change the files or you can just change them on your computer for single player or games that you host.

+ Can change biome file, so you can re-add ore everywhere in the random gen maps.
+ Can modify Zombie Spawning, Recipes, Biomes (How much ore, what kinds of ore, what kind of blocks, water, etc.), pretty much anything someone is complaining about can be tweaked.
+ Zombies, lots of Zombies, They can walk all the time, Run only at Night, or Run all the time.

I actually tweaked the spawner, so that it just spawned animals and I had a fun and rather peaceful time of looting, building and just dinking around. I added a bunch of Hornet Spawns and those things are blighted evil. They bide their time in the sky and swoop down at you when you least expect them to. I did that, before they added the bears. Could have a lot more fun adding them and making your Zombie Survival Game into a "Non-Zombie" Survival Game.

+ Can hunt Rabbits, Pigs, Deer (Stags only), Giant Hornets, and Bears. Yes, Bears. (Dogs are actually "Zombie Dogs".) The Hornets Drop Honey which is odd, but then again they are Giant Hornets. Who knows how they actually became gigantic, mabye they are mutated / crossbred with bees.

+ Need to eat and Drink to Survive. *Plans to add hot / cold survival features.* Desert/Snow Biomes should become a lot more interesting to deal with.
+ Various food items, can cook, can grow crops. Just missing an option to capture and breed animals, that would make the farming experience complete, but still great without it. Can gather crops, make seed of some of your crops, replant your entire field, and have crops left over to use.

The game is an Alpha release. So far the Developers have been doing an awesome job and usually release a hotfix fairly quickly after a major release to take care of the worst bugs.

I got this game during a sale. I would have got this game a lot sooner, if I knew how awesome it was.

I would whole heartedly recommend this game. Assuming, you don't mind re-building bases, starting over after each major update, and a few minor annoyances caused by this game being an Early Access Alpha Release. Personally, I like starting over every now and again just to see a new map or to try once again to see how long I can go, before my first death.

The game never starts, if there aren't enough players on each side. The controls / mechanics for building are a bit off. Will give it a try with a friend, but the game just doesn't feel polished.

Final Review--09/08/2020:
I had a lot of fun with this game, before they added the "Riot Cop Zombie". Unloading a full clip of machine gun fire into said Z's helmeted head, does nothing. Every other Z instantly drops with 1 shot to the head. The game is unplayable, unless you kite the stupid Z. Which is stupid. They killed their own game. Good luck finding anyone to play with.
Original Review: Crazy Zombie Game, where your allegiance may chance at any moment. XD
Updated Review: I played this for a long time during the early release stage. It was awesome, fun, and only getting better. Then they added Riot Cop Zombies, who you can barely kill, and spawn at random. The Riot Cop Zombies are a horrible unbalanced addition to an otherwise fun game.
Second Update to Review: After a fairly long absence of playing Contagion and a number of updates / fixes later, I figured I would give it a try. Every single annoyance / unbalanced issue I had with the game remains unchanged. Not sure what all they've been working on, but it's still a horribly broken mess. They are releasing the new free DLC with even more fixes / updates. I may give it another go, but it'll probably be a while.

I was able to defeat the Eater of Worlds once on Legendary difficulty. Even with the scarf, I've still been unable to repeat the feat. Also, the same issue with Skeletron essentially insta-killing me and the Wall of Flesh being stupendously awful.

That said, Legendary mode is non-essential to enjoy the game. Would be nice, if it wasn't quite as over-the-top crazy, but I can understand the crazyness.

It could possibly be much more doable with a friend or three.

--v1.4.4.9--03/21/2024
The game is still awesome! The Don't Starve Together content is cool. Legendary is stupidly hard (ForTheWorthy seed on Classic+Master, haven't even tried the everything seed, which has a few more challenges thrown in the mix). Eater of Worlds is near impossible Solo. I have max gear for pre-hardmode and still get instakilled by Skeletron. Wall of Flesh spawns lots of fire imps who shoot fireballs that you can't block. Literally the only boss that I've been able to use a minetrack to beat is the Eye of Cthulu. It's consistent and not horrible. Even the King Slime is harder than the Eye. King Slime is huge and near impossible to defeat without an extraordinarly long flat running surface or great mobility items. I have Terraspark boots (yes, you can get those pre-hardmode), bundle of horseshoe balloons, Molten armor set, Obsidian Armor set, Jungle Armor set, dmg focus accessories, defense focus accessories, red potions (special for the worth potions that help you), all of the potions you need, plus campfires, heart lamps, bast statues, and gnome statues. None of which is good enough to keep me alive long enough to defeat the Eater of Worlds (worm boss). Which I think might be enough to get me over the edge against Skeletron and Wall of flesh (worm scarf for dmg reduction). Then, you would have even tougher enemies (after defeating the Wall of flesh) and I'm thinking it's just not worth it. It's not fun solo and I don't have a group of friends that can help tackle it all. I've come within a few thousand HP of killing the Eater of Worlds a few times, but it's just not working. Also, the typical above ground arena for Eater of Worlds is a non-starter due to it constantly showering you with a boat load of venomous spit. I thought it might be a fun challenge. I've spent 60+ hours on this playthrough and haven't gotten into hardmode and have literally only killed Eye of Cthulu, King Slime, and Deerclops bosses in that order. The Legendary "special difficulty" could be better summed up as "Boss Cheat Mode" or "For the True Sufferers" or "For Parties Only". I'm not horrible at the game, but I'm also not a "min/max everything" / memorize the pattern / practice for hours to defeat one boss kind of gamer. Thankfully there's no achievements associated with Legendary mode and it just seems to be there to give those that need something stupid hard as a challenge. I just wish that there was something that could give me an edge, even if it just took a lot longer to prep/etc than someone who can literally dodge 99.99% of the boss moves/projectiles/enemies spawned around it / from it/etc.

--Don't Starve Together - Crossover Update - 11/20/2021
Played this on the special new "The Constant" seed and it's a fun and fresh Terraria experience. You have hunger like on DST and need to eat every now and again. It can be a bit of a struggle at the start, but once you get setup, it's not too bad. Just remember, trees drop food, then you can move on to fishing. Once you're able to fish, you have all the food you will ever need. Darkness is also dangerous, not just from the I can't see anything aspect. I've played a few hours and haven't found any of the new DST content item wise. I did start over from scratch on a new map with a new character though, so the items may just be coming later on in the game progression. Still, it's a very fun experience. :-)

--Journey's End--Review Update--Sept. 8th, 2020
More like Journey's beginning! The "Journey's End" update added so much. There's even funner modes for those that are just wanting a casual, fun to play experience. A much more difficult mode, with included in-game trophies you can decorate with. They've updated the models / sprites, etc. The massive amount of work done on Terraria is awesome. Highly recommended. While it's unfortunate that the game relies heavily on the wiki for useful information regarding progression, recipes, etc. They've added some very useful in-game tracking of things. Not a replacement for the Wiki, but a huge improvement.
--

This is a fun mining/crafting/survival 2D game. It is a lot of fun, especially when played with a friend. :-)

Review Update:
This game is one of the best games of all time without a doubt. The only downfall is they don't have a good in game "help" kind of system. The wiki is hugely helpful, but without it you may feel a bit lost. Some accessories can only be gained by combining two or more items. Usually directly gaining both benefits, but in a number of cases (especially where % increases are involved) the upgraded item isn't 100% better than both items seperate. Also, You owe it to yourself to play this game in Expert Mode. When playing with friends Everyone gets a Treasure Bag for defeating the boss. (I have had one or two instances where I lost one due to what I am guessing was Lag.) When playing on Expert mode you will get items that you can only get while playing in Expert Mode. All items from Expert Mode can be used in a Non-Expert Mode World, but there is one reward that is Expert Mode only. I love playing this game with friends, by myself, and with my Wife.

Hermit Update! They added a new hero!

2023: True Labor Of Love, devs+communty = best. (6,942.0 hours played says a lot.)

2022 Review Update:
The game is definitely worth the money. Up to a certain point, you can play the game just about any way you want. Once you start getting into the end game, you can start to feel the squeeze. You need certain combinations of heros, defenses, etc. to make the most of all the bonus effects. Like Monk Tower Boost, you may never use it or feel like it's not terribly useful, or Monk Auras, or EV tower buff beams. Once you get to a certain point, those are super useful for helping your build survive and/or do enough dmg. Also, unfortunately, the Apprentice towers are so much more overpowered than Squire towers. Squire towers are very rarely used. About the only thing they're used for nowadays are for the Spring Valley challenge map. Where they're not even really necessary. Summoner is a super great co-op partner to have and/or to get and use, because it doubles your available defenses as Minions have their own set of points to use. Highly recommend joining the Dungeon Defenders Runs and Giveaways Discord as well. It's a bit nutty and somewhat not-child friendly, but the help-chat channel is the best place to get help. Though, the wiki may be getting updated slowly and is still pretty useful for figuring out achievements. Which generally unlock more item space in your forge.

2021 Update:
So, I guess that the last event and what not at the end of 2020 was the last official anything. Dungeon Defenders Runs and Giveaways Discord channel is the active community for Dungeon Defenders. It's where the community development team (The team that released all of "The Lost Quests".) hangs out. Plane has always been the most active, but also seems to be the only one still somewhat active. Still, lots of giveaways and stuff. It's also the best place to learn anything about the game. The game has updated so much, the only thing the wiki is really good for is what's required for all the achievements. This is a super awesome game! Highly recommend it, if you've never played. In the event that you've not played in a while. It's worth getting back into it! There's so much content that's been released, it's awesome.

2020 Update:
So, they've released a new Modded branch of the game. Accessible via the Steam Beta feature. It seems interesting, but I would say it's a good addition for those that have already played Dungeon Defenders to death. xD I may eventually get around to playing it, but from the sound of it, it's pretty nice. It also has separate saves from your normal Dungeon Defenders, but it has a one time import from the Official Multiplayer Server version of Dungeon Defenders. So, likely best to finish DD, then move on to the new modded thing.

The 2019 update was awesome. :-) Seriously, this game is a total blast from start to finish. There are some serious speed bumps along the way, but you can continually get better EQ (to a certain point). It's a great game. I had tons of fun at the very beginning with the slow enemies and intense battles (Which shortly become super easy for you, but still lots of other challenges.), to the hectic pace of Nightmare maps and End Game maps. Great thing about this game is that those "End Game" maps, have kept on getting pushed back. All the way to 2019, with the final community patch.

You owe it to yourself to play this game with a friend, if you can find one that enjoys it as well.

2019 Update:
I've yet to play the new update, but a new free community map was released in February of 2019. Complete with new added rewards and a rebalancing of the new Crystalline Dimension Bosses. Hopefully, they're actually doable now. First boss was easy enough, 2nd and 3rd, still haven't beaten on Nightmare Hardcore difficulty.

Dungeon Defenders is in it's own right a classic RPG/FPS/Tower Defense game now. Games will be trying to live up to the awesomeness that is Dungeon Defenders for a long, long time. This game is only surpassed by Terraria. Possibly the best update for Terraria was the new Ethernian Crystal Event. :-) Stupendously awesome game + Stupendously awesome mini-game == 1000% Awesome.

Original Review:
Very good Tower Defense game. :-) Fun by yourself, but best played with a Friend.

-------------------------------------
Updated 4 year old review.
-------------------------------------

The game is still just as awesome as when I reviewed it 4 years ago. The devs have switched their focus to making the new Dungeon Defenders 2 a good game, but there's even more content coming!

There has already been one or two free community updates that have added 3 new maps. There's also another community update that's currently in beta testing. Should be out in January 2018! (Or close to it.)

Dungeon Defenders is still well worth the money. It is a great cross between Fantasy RPG and Tower Defense. This is one of my favorite games of all time.

You can start out in easy, medium, or hard mode. Any of those three should be doable at the start. Insane and Nightmare are meant for more established characters and are completely unplayable by a random starter character.

There is a campaign mode that gives you some interesting story cut scenes. I would say they are pretty good quality. Maybe not stellar, but it really fits the style of the game.

There are dozens of challenge maps in addition to the campaign maps, bonus campaign maps, Lost Eternia Shard pack, new (free community update) Lost Quests pack, and the (free community update) new release in probably Jan. 2018.

Each character has their own set of towers and / or abilities. The barbarian is the only character that can't build any towers and has to join others in order to progress. The other characters could be your own characters as you can have one or multiple builders and swap between characters at will during wave breaks. Be warned that the EV and Huntress towers / traps can't protect against flyers. You don't encounter them in the first couple of maps, but flyers are introduced fairly quickly. Really, it's quite fun to play any of the characters, but I've recently been having a blast with the Jester. The Jester is quicker than most (quickest?), has 2 base towers and random present towers that can be one tower from any other character class. The presents are tiered and Can Spawn an Ogre. This can really screw you up when you're relatively new. So, be careful when placing the presents.

Armor can be worn by any character, but has multiple tiers that require a certain level to use. Max character level is 100.

Accessories can be worn by any character and have the same tier system as armor.

Weapons are character class specific and have the same tier system. Some classes can use multiple types of weapons. If memory serves, EV uses Huntress and Apprentice weapons. Jester can use Any Weapon, which is pretty cool. Though, the Jester doesn't have any of the special combat skills that the other classes have.

"Pets" can be used by any class, but again have the same tier system as all the rest of items / equipment. There are attack, Defense, Combat, Healing, and "builder" pets. They all have thier uses and are quite fun to play with.

Bosses -- Some Bosses will be perferred to have at least one hero boost monk in the party. Hero boost on a monk, makes everyone uber awesome. Like 2 to 4x awesome. xD Though, a Monk isn't necessary as the DPS hero, it's a good choice to make as a DPS hero.

There is so much in this game, strategy, action and story. You can focus on strategy, because well this is a Tower Defense game, but you aren't forced to. You can treat it like a casual hack and slash, just don't get in the way of people building. They will love you, if you help plug holes in their defense, tank a boss, etc. The game can be as hard or as easy as you want. (With a few exceptions, easy isn't easy in some cases, but those are much newer maps.)
