Omg this game must have used Rage's id Tech 6 engine. My issues with all Bethesda's games, great games like Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3 was clunky slow disengaged FPS game mechanics. None of that in Fallout 4, smooth, fast, coordinated. Sprinted around + 180 turn/shoot buncha times at power boxes - nice tight centered groupings. No consolitis observed so far, besides having to use glovepie to map keys like R to what I want.

3D Vision - with Felix's I give Excellent compatibility. Slows the game noticeably, though berable on my 970.

Gameplay: ran into buncha roaches n died :) ... typical Fallout for ya. Same feel like in Rage everything was artist-painted, and original. Great athmospheric sumbersion, and did I mention fast n responsive while all those good looks? I am in love. Just started to play 06/28/2018, will update.

Early Access Review
Slow jumpfest. Jumpeddy jump jump, jumpy jump jump jumpy jump.
This is idiocy, magnitude of which I have not been subjected to in a long time. Got Cisco CCENT first attempt no network exposure, learning UE4 and Blender atm, this is insulting level of stupidity.

Don't play this game. Unless you don't mind constantly jumping. When the game's mechanic's are balanced in such way that it all cancels out and jumping adds the most value - no thanks. Oh but its not fast-paced, especially not frenetic. Coming from person who plays Serious Sam 3 on hardest difficulty with just a hammer (take on 30-40 skleer skeletons at once (can't be done??? - side step n angle / concentrate them all in a center mass, then they all do same thing (making dodging them all possible); then just side-step and hammer 1 by 1)).

Major reason_1: just stopped trying - slow, choppy, not sure if it's like that in 3D Vision only, but that's how I play since 2010, and won't play unless it is stereoscopic.

Major reason_2: slow by design. Not frenetic by any stretch of imagination. This is slow. Quake 1, 3, UT 1999 was frenetic. Is this because so console players can have a chance? And to see an essentially slowed down reality all being completely predictable, non-tactical or strategic in any way, AND NOT BEING ABLE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT is a torture in itself. Frustrated I went on to play something frenetic - SS3 or Shadow Warrior 2. Hello id - if I see it, I can hit it in the head; if I can't because you're slowing me down (for some unknown reason (well really known - to give console players a chance)) - you got a deal breaker.

Secondary reason - jumping; everybody is jumping. I mean always, non-stop, and there is no punishment in a game's mechanic against that, moreover - it's the only thing that works. And I understand fully - that I can jump too - I JUST DON'T WANT TO - constantly jump non-stop; but they are all jumping, and it actually works, and it is annoying. This crap would have not worked in new UT: you would have suffered rocked splash while in midair, then have a direct rocket hit waiting for you on your landing.

FINAL VERDICT:

Coming from old UT and Quake vet - spare me this slow jumpfest.

I paid full price because of my respect to John, the brand, and id. $$ is not my issue at all, I was glad to give them 39.99 - just f develop something for me. Something ... fun if you will. Can you? Please???

Will check back in a week, or a month.

Afterthoughts: whish this makes it to Pier Bernard's Recliner of Rage.

I returned it after a brief 1-2 hours of play. I just could not get over those wispering voices. It annoyed me so much I could not play it. Got Dead Souls II instead; still playing - stopped playing other games for now been 2 months.

I recommend you make up your own mind and do give it a try. You might like it.

Bethesda totally backstabbed John Carmack's ideas on this one. He did procrastinate with Doom, but still I would not resort to this.

Not only Bethesda clumped Doom 2016 and Quake 2016 material together, they also recycled crap from ... looks like Oblivion / Skyrim universe - the Argon Tower is a darn Deidra tower (possibly the rays of energy too), just can't miss it if you see it, and many entrances to the caves (into which you can not go in) are the Oblivion quest caves lol - lame; and to insult your intelligence - did you think we would not notice??? Add some s888ty Metal cosmetic and we're done.

I highly dislike how you can tell some enemies are from Quake. Teleporting, flying demon is a Witch from Q4. Machinegunner with a shield - intended for Quake5. Man-made some of them? They're from a hell dimension... Like shape / weight don't even calculate here... wev. Also - lets assume the lab of a crazy scientist (that embraced hell (ok, cool w me)) modyfied some demons, but then why do the UNMODYFIED DEMONS spawn within same bunches as the MODYFIED DEMONS??? I mean I can see some were captured, let's not overthink, ok fine. But 1st type would spawn randomly as you get closer bc they can feel you getting to the root of it all (what ever that is (final teleport to hell? some area on the map they feel most dearest about?)), and the 2nd type is roaming around bc broke loose, or breaks out as you progress through the labs, or maps, the base.

Now weapons - heavy machine gun is a nail gun. Railgun ... Upgrading your weapons - not sure I like it, but a whole other story (it's just cool these days, lets do it too! (but will you have upgradeable weapons for next Oblivion, Bethesda??? Prob not bc you respect YOUR vision). Also, its either you see the weapon + use onscreen crosshair, or zoom in for "iron sights"; not here - keep wanting to zoom in more, to look through the weapon's sight, sure looks like it was originally intended but scrapped last second (just like the rest of this game's material). Also agree with another review / drawing of FPS view of weapons is regarded*, especially w pathetic zoom attempt; why even bother?! I'd rather have mouse 2 for sprint, than waste it on failed zoom.

I like Doom, but the levels / pattern of enemy presense is more Quake. Much vertical fast-paced movement, small bunches of enemies spawning in medium-sized rooms. They claimed it's more Doom than original, but I don't see huge opened spaces with huge hordes, not once. A few mediocre'ish areas with a similar architecture (... ok for heaven's sake - they're all rectangular - boxes!!!). Don't expect humongous pentagrams / valleys of lava. You got a huge open area Lv1 only, and even at that - it is obvious Q5 material - how you crash on the Strogg planet in beginning. Box after box - great job!

No this is not the best action game of 2016. Just because of how short it was, and how monotonous, and I don't care how advanced the engine technology is. Do a world a favor - give it to some action minds, and away from hands of slow magical games people. I uninstalled every bethesda game... xept for Evil Within for now (was entirely made in Japan anyway). Great engine otherwise, have not seen anything like it. Just wish another team handled ALL of the creative material, from weapons to maps and demons. From handful of demons I do approve are cacodemon and Hell Knight and Baron of Hell.

O.M.G. Demented and sick person made this game. A person like me. Thank you. Long, challenging, fun game that draws you ... into the light ... is this my hand typing?! I... I ... don't know anymore. It's him... must get out... must get out...
You can tell influence from old RE and Silent Hill. This game is brutal and unforgiving, 1 wrong move = grotesque death; like lets say even if the small cockroach killed you, they would zoom all the way in and show it's jaws ripping your flesh apart lol; takes some psychological stamina to finish this game.
To all of you who abandoned it - you don't have what it takes! On a friendlier note - sure the learning curve is humongous for this one, but - you can do it! And then don't blame me for not wanting to stop playing it. Just don't stop sharpening your axe over it, its not worth it. Or is it?
Use matches. Knock one down, wait for others to come - ignite downed one at the right moment. Puff - giant torch... shhh.... stop screaming, you disfigured mongroloidal ... post human thing being type thing - just stop hurting me.

Great game, especially for the price - a steal. Controller - who plays fps w controller? Voice acting - awesome; I mean they are not trying to feed you some crap and being serious about it like others for 59.99. Anyway, it is slightly cheesy, but the characters are fun, great sense of humor - also goes for the remarks / descriptions of stuff (if you get it). Not sure what you're into, but w mouse n kb this game had my reflexes tested for sure. Absolutely can't picture it w controller (same I feel re Doom '16). Great atmosphere of absolute creepiness of being alone on a space ship / what humanity resorted to, like the first one; and the human characters we friends with did not spoil it.
You can develop your character in many ways with many moves / powers; together with many weapons (and their respectable upgrades) you can develop your own strategy style. Like push off the feet w force ability then melee bash mostly, then nade / rocket big clusters of zeds or stronger ones, or pistol then main weapon combo, or put up shield field ability / bullet time + chain / mg the horde and such.
Pros - reflexes, sharp humor (if you get Conan at least), more social w char's n coop, level up / develop char, more weaps = much richer variety of tactics.
Cons - Less creepy than DE1 bc less alone feeling (but in a good way, bc that was one of reasons I would stop playing DE1 and join my KF(1) friends (KF2 is garbage)), door message "access denied" / "access granted" way less sexy > DE1, leveling system sometimes makes everything feel redundant - wep/armor/implants levels vs zed levels vs difficulty setting (said feeling goes away later as you play more).
I highly recommend leveling up to 15 first, for more consistent feeling of challenge, then concentrate on leveling weapons / experimenting on harder difficulty. Get suit parts and/or codexes that say "machine learning" to level faster. I challenge you to take the jumpy one's with 2 horns heads off w that pipboy zapper thingy mid-jump as they rush you. Very satisfying, samurai feeling, kinda like waiting for attack then countering, like in Onimusha or Tekken.
Spoiler: and accuracy improving implant's description "... completely bypasses nervous system and feeds data directly to the brain via tactical chip for improved accuracy".
Other thoughs - was free for my cell, but unplayable/not fun, $6.99 for PC, now its 11.99; interesting, I guess more people are bying it. Oh - and Unity engine is implemented just fine here, no fps spikes; 2 year old PC w GTX 970, i5 DDR3.

Same clunkiness and consolitis and just certain slow clusiness as the other one. Grafix got a very nice update. Simpler char system. Beautiful huge scenery w huge creatures incl dragons w nice cutscenes merging into real-time action.
