I wanted to like this game based on style, but the core beat-em-up mechanics are awful. Slow default character speed, hard to grab enemies when you want, hard to just beat up downed enemies, enemies can just eternal block with no obvious counter option. Maybe more moves are unlocked to make the game tolerable, but I don't care at this point.
Final Fight (30+ years old) had way less moves yet somehow plays 100% better.

I've been a long time XCOM fan since the beginning and I like the overall direction Chimera Squad is headed. It perhaps could be called a XCOM2 branch spinoff since so similar in assets and engine, but it definitely stands on its own so not just some chump DLC. One of the core differences is starting conflicts as breach based entry with overall much more compact maps that really keeps the action going. This addresses one of my main complaints with XCOM2 is that basically you wander around maps to trigger enemies to surprise pop out of no where. It kept the action going, but ripped out a lot of strategy that the XCOM original series had. Instead of setting up interesting troop positions one just had to keep in mind how best to exploit enemy spawn trigger points.

Back to Chimera Squad, as result of the smaller maps they go quicker and there is no sniper rifle which makes sense. Maps typically vary from 1 to 3 parts which is an interesting way to expand how levels play and strategy considerations. Also worth mentioning is the game is played in a new per unit timeline instead of each side taking a whole turn. New stuff may sound scarry, but I didn't think much about it and I didn't have any problem with it at all. It certainly keeps player interest better instead of being forced to watch 1 big long boring enemy turn on previous XCOMS.

Chimera Squad mixes up the story side look by using 2D art instead of 3D cut scenes, likely to keep the budget down and I didn't mind. The voice acting and plot kept my interest sneaking in some bits of humor without being too over the top. That said there were definitely a couple times where the responses seemed pretty childish when the context is talking to criminals causing mayhem in the city. I don't get the backlash on other reviews since XCOM has always been on the cartoony side of presentation even if not cell-shading everything. Perhaps hard to perfectly describe, but XCOM has never been cyberpunk level serious in presentation.

Another big change is the characters have their own preset personalities instead being more generic soldiers you can customize. Additionally the level will be considered failed if any soldiers outright die which I'm fine with since I think most people who played XCOM were save ♥♥♥♥♥♥ anyway. The ironman playthrough I think is a road much less traveled when it comes to the overall XCOM playerbase. People like to talk about perma-death being cool, then when it actually happens they seem to change their mind :P

The game allows quite a mix playable soldier races which I enjoyed to offer something new and expand upon play styles. The enemies are a good mix of old and new as well. As usual it will take more than one play through to know which characters work exactly for your play style and once you know what all is possible in the game. It can seem like one character is pretty meh at first, but then greatly grows in strength as their abilities are unlocked. For example I saw someone complain about Zephyr on their review, but they were a straight up murder machine on my game. Torque on the other hand seemed pretty crap-tastic without high tier abilities.

The logistical side is minimized where there isn't a bunch of base building or UFO hunting, instead there is just some strategy on setting up influence on city districts for resource perks and anarchy management. Like in earlier XCOM games, if you let places get too bad off it will cause the big ol' game over.

My play through wasn't bug free where I saw some visual glitches with damage popups and got stuck not being able to move 1 time, but overall nothing to make me rage as the auto save system is robust. Loading a recent auto save fixed the stuck in place bug BTW. Sometimes camera angles during breaching are not so great, and in general I think doing a split-screen when doing multiple breach points would really up improve the visual flair.

Overall if you like the meat and potatoes of blasting aliens in XCOM, Chimera Squad likely is for you. However, If you miss talking long treks on bigger maps and want to play more with logistics and customization, then you should stick with XCOM2 stuff. For $10 on sale Chimera Squad was a no brainer for me compared to XCOM 2: War of the Chosen which still tries to sell for $40 and is basically meh DLC.

Botvice delivered everything I hoped out of it. Being able to move, cover, roll, and slash takes some getting used to yet provides plenty of options for a new player while also room to perfect skills. The cut scenes are bit cheezy, likely on purpose for the retro feel, but I appreciated how each level felt unique along with pretty good enemy variety.
Overall solid professional look and gameplay feel.
