This game has had an interesting life. A lukewarm reception when it originally released on Battle.net, followed by a subpar first season, hurt this game immensely. The second season showed signs of improvement, but not enough to get most players back on board. Year 1 of this game's life was enough to make any company think about giving up on it. Bungie persisted though, and the first major expansion, Forsaken, was a welcome addition. The seasonal content throughout year 2 was an interesting mixture of hit or miss events, but for the most part, it showed that the game was continuing to improve. And now we come to year 3 with the next big expansion, Shadowkeep, and for PC players, the game's move to Steam. The general consensus so far is that the expansion is good, but the initial seasonal content could be better.

In the end, I think it's important to recognize that this game has been flawed since the beginning, but has shown that Bungie are always trying to improve it, whether they succeed or not with each new piece of content. More importantly, there's no sign of this stopping any time soon. Personally, every year I find something I enjoy about the game, even with the myriad of problems it has had, and whether they affect me specifically, or not. I recommend this game, but only because I enjoy the gameplay loops enough to keep coming back all the time. This game isn't for everyone, and I know many will not enjoy it for what it is, but I do believe, after all these years, that Bungie is trying to create something that they want people to enjoy.

Update (11/25/2020): Just wanted to add that the Beyond Light expansion and current seasonal content seemed a bit lackluster at first, but it feels like more and more gets opened up week after week, so it's slowly becoming better as time goes on. I'm really enjoying the new Stasis class, and I actually like how the system for unlocking new abilities and passives for it is more interesting than the previous system, which was mostly just "use one ability until something new unlocks".
