Been playing for 6 Hours. Absolutely love the game so far. I've gotten pretty far on character creation. Rumor is, there is a campaign mode after character creation, I just haven't got there yet.

This is my first Steam review. I felt compelled to write it becasue I went back and forth myself on whether or not to play this game. I'm so glad I did.

Up front, if you are a fan of Gothic I, Gothic II, or Risen I: Then you will likely love this game. It takes all the great things from those games and then improves upon it. I also enjoyed games like Skyrim and The Witcher just to give you an idea of what my taste are.

Elex does a few things absolutely fantastic. First of all your decisions actually matter. You may not see the effects right away, but a lot of your choices will impact the story, quests, and the world in a meaningful way. There are multiple ways to solve quest. Some of them can be solved in 3-4 different ways based on how you develop your character, which gives you the ability to play the game in the way you want to play it. Third up is the Open World. The planet is diverse, just the right size in my opinion, and it is absolutely beautiful. Loot is all hand placed and it's in places that make sense. You'll come accross safes and if you pay attention to the clues in the enviornment you can sometimes figure out the codes to get into them. You'll find literature all over the world that hints at the story of the world before the comet hit. There are legendary weapons hidden throughout the lands that you can find as well as plants that you can use to create potions to permanantly increase your states with the right recipes. The factions are very diverse, but all of them have their strengths and weaknesses.

Some people knock the combat, which ultimately i really don't think its bad. It's no different than Skyrim. You can do a quick or hard attack. You can block, and chain attacks together to make combos. I like that the enemies have different bahaviours and attack in different ways enough so that every fight doesn't feel like a rinse and repeart. Your jetpack and things in the enviornment add an interesting dynamic to combat. It's not fantastic, but overall i don't feel like combat is really the focus of the game. There are also plenty of settings in game to increase or decrease the difficulty of combat depending on your preferences.

The one area, I didn't like about Elex is the end game. By level 30, I had found the best weapons in the game. I had purchased the best armor in the game. At this point i had explored about 2/3s of the world and with the massive amount of money I had and the quality of the loot available in teh world, there just wasn't that much af an incentive to explore this amazingly awesome world to me. So i fiddled around and pushed myself to do it anyways and hit around level 38, but ultimately just decided to go and finish the main story quest without exploring the whole world. Maybe this is a good thing in that it adds to the replayability. But I'm one of those guys that just likes to play through once and explore everything, so i was a little bummed by this.

Overall, Elex is a must for former Gothic Fans. It's true strengths are meaningful decisions, a detailed hand crafted open world to explore with interesting locations and lore throughout the world.
