Black Mesa’s experiments with resonance cascades in the late ‘90’s had many unexpected results; the best known of these was the opening of a rift in the time-space continuum. Because of the uncertainty of where one would be transported on the globe, the chances of finding the rift and returning through it before it closed were just too slim to make the venture feasible.

One individual did enter this singularity, although instead of entering it from our time, he entered it from an unknown time. From his dress, experts were able to decipher that he was probably of Scandinavian origin. However, the articles he carried were obviously from many varied regions, indicating he was a man of great travel. Within weeks, however, he had mastered English so well that he spoke it as fluently as his own ancient Norse tongue. This baffled our experts, until they discovered that he was a man of some importance in his time, charged with maintaining historical and written records for some time in a country in the east, probably the Ming Dynasty of China.

This man related us stories that many before would have thought only as myths, stories about dragons and sorcerers and many animals that were thought to be extinct by the time of man. He told us his name was Conan The Librarian, and that after his family had been slain by a vicious race who happened to prize minds over steel, he had been taken as a slave and tutored in reading and high art. But his time at this was short, for when he reached adulthood, he rebelled and became a warrior after the nature of his fathers.

The researchers at Black Mesa believed that Conan had great value as a subject, in that he could tell us many things that we had previously not known about his time; but he became unable to control after learning that he was not to be set free and returned to his own time. The Black Ops team was called in after he had bludgeoned several scientists with a crowbar that he probably found in an unlocked toolbox.

After several Black Ops personnel were also killed in this manner, the team was pulled out, and a stand-down and watch was placed on Block 7 of Black Mesa, with the intent of smoking him out with tear gas. Unbeknownst to the team, someone inside aided Conan in his escape, and when they finally did enter Block 7, he was missing. A wide search was put on for him, but despite his large size and strange appearance, he was able to slip the net. A team of g-men finally caught up to him in Oxford, England, where he had attempted to slip onto the faculty of that prestigious University. He was only thwarted by a lack of credible references; apparently he so impressed the regent who interviewed him that he was very nearly hired. When the g-men went to arrest him, however, he beheaded three of them with a broadsword from a display of armor in one of the hallways, and was last seen fleeing the scene of that crime with the weapon in hand.

Later reports of this subject confirm that he was part of a group of outcasts who formed the rogue team of terrorists OTC, and that he remains affiliated with them. There are also reports that his inside knowledge of the operations that created the singularity (the rift in the space-time continuum) has afforded this group access to the rift; that they now know at least how to reopen it, and that they may be working on a way to control where and when one can arrive on the other side of the rift. They may even know how to return. This knowledge, if they do possess it, would make OTC the most dangerous outlaws in the world.
