The poster child of what an HD remake should be.

Path of Exile (PoE) seems to be introduced to most as the real Diablo II sequel. For this reason, I will compare it to Diablo III (D3). This review was made 12/26/13.

The length of the game. PoE take much longer to beat than D3 and there is no shortage of side quests.

The talent tree in PoE is much more complex than most games and is one of the most interesting and unique elements of the game. You have a lot of viable choices here. The only disappointing part is that while you can respec talents one by one with certain items and quest rewards, respeccing completely if you don't like your current tree/play style seems like it would take too much effort. Though more interesting, it lacks the flexibility to openly change playstyles, unlike D3.

Itemization: Itemization is surely better than D3 and many other RPGs. As the game is new it will continue to get better. The gems that fit into sockets also dictate what spells you have which is neat at first but can become annoying after a time.

Sound and Graphics: As far as sound and graphics, PoE is not horrible but not exactly up to date either. Most modern RPGs have better graphics, though most of the music is good in my opinon. If compared to D3, PoE certainly gets blown out of the water in this category.

Story: The story seems somewhat lacking, though there are little lore fragments you can discover on your adventure. The story in most other RPGs are considerably better in my opinon. Not to mention PoE has little for cinematics.

Microtransactions: There is no pay to win here. The microtransactions are purely cosmetic and pets.

Overall, PoE can be fun but is also frusterating at times. Being new, there are some bugs such as occasionally not getting quest credit (happened to me twice) but I'm sure they will be fixed over time. Additionally, at first the game appeared to flow sluggishly but I stopped noticing it after a few hours. On a positive note, there is certainly replayability with 3 long acts and plenty of farming to be had. The talent tree, items, and abilities are interesting as well. I expect this game to get a lot better with upcoming patches in the coming months. As of now, I personally prefer the Diablo series but PoE shows promise. If you're into this type of RPG, I certainly recommend giving it a shot.
