I switched my review from positive to negative after a little over 8 hours of gameplay. I was going to do a discussion about some of the concerns that I had about this game, but I would rather create a review because I don't want to argue with others.

I have played this game quite a bit over the past two days. Cutting to the chase: This game throws MANY unfair curveballs at me, and I feel like I need to address some.

- You cannot grind for money in this game with random encounters. This means that if you need more resources, all that you're left to do are trainer battles, which are not repeatable. Another thing that you can do, is buy a ton of Temcards, catch them, and release them for only a tiny amount of money at the FreeTem! Organization. It would probably take 30 minutes just to get enough money for a revive.

- Speaking of revives, every item that we use in a LOST duel is consumed. This means that we need to either sell items, do quests, or do the FreeTem strategy to gain more money. I used 3 revives (which was all that I could afford) in a dojo, and after I died, I am basically softlocked unless I spend hours just to try and grind more money for more revives.

- There are too many trainer battles and too little random encounters. At times, I would be in a small patch of grass, and every two steps, I would be greeted to a random encounter, and this would happen three times in a row before I can get out of the grass and go back to a healing station for my Temtem. I consider this unfair, because it feels like the encounter algorithm is broken.

- After you have gone so far into the game, you won't have as many trainer battles available to you, thus, leaving yourself with little room to make money.

- I find this game to be a lot more difficult than it needs to be. There are plenty of repetitive battles which make the game annoying. It felt a little uncommon when I came across a trainer in Pokémon, and trainer battles felt more rewarding than the trainer battles in Temtem.

- The in-game economy doesn't quite make sense. A balm is 80 pansuns and it heals 25 health. A balm+ is 325 pansuns and it heals 75 health. If 3 balms heal the same amount as one balm+, then why is it 85 pansuns cheaper? I understand that it heals more health at once, and that it may be useful for trainer/dojo battles, but it doesn't seem right to me. Especially if I could just heal outside of battle.

- Not related to the battles in the game, but why are cosmetics an option if they're too expensive to afford? 4,000 pansuns just to change your hair? 20,000+ just to get a shirt? Not once in the game have I ever made over 4,000 pansuns, and I couldn't imagine how long it would take just to get a cosmetic. It feels like in-game currency will be available to purchase with in-app purchases once it's out of early access. I was reading a discussion about this, and based on someone's math, it looks like you would need to catch and release 400 temtems in order to afford a basic shirt.

---

Either way, I love the game, but I honestly don't know how much more that I would enjoy playing it if I'm getting slapped in the face by some of these unfair scenarios. The concept is great, I love the graphics, and the music is amazing. However, much like everyone else is saying: This is like the PC version of Pokémon, except it's in the style of an MMO game. I wish that the developers would fix how some things work in this game. I am becoming more frustrated than happy while playing the game at this point...

As I have been getting into JRPGs recently, I've been loving how Octopath Traveler is going so far. I was hesitant to get it with the price, but when it's on sale (any sale), I'd definitely say "go for it". The only complains that I have about this game is that it's VERY grindy. Get ready for plenty of difficulty curves, especially towards the beginning of the game. When you get more characters, the game gets a little easier. However, when you're about to move onto the next chapter, you may need to spend several hours grinding in order to make the game a little easier and tolerable to play.

There are four chapters for eight travelers, meaning that there's 32 chapters for you to play. The first chapter of each character is the easiest, obviously. I finished the first chapter for every character and it took me roughly 12 hours (that is, opening every chest I could find, completing every battle I ran into, etc). There is so much content in this game, and if you get a hang of how the game plays, you'll end up playing the game anywhere between 60-100 hours, depending how committed that you are.

The artwork and soundtrack are masterpieces. I ended up finding some of the songs on Spotify and listened to them while I was driving, because the songs just never get old. The artwork doesn't distract you from the content. It may look pixelated, but nonetheless, it's still a really unique style. I wish that I could find more games that had this type of artstyle in the game.

Overall, amazing game. I would rate it a 8.5/10. I would also recommend playing it on a controller.

TL:DR:

Pros - Great art, story, soundtrack, design, graphics, and length of game.

Cons - Difficulty curves, grindy, and cutscenes can be a little long.

I played Grandia II for 6 hours straight today, and I can't bring myself to stop playing it. I've never played this game before, and from a person who's picky with games to play, I haven't been hooked on a game this much throughout 2019. Fantastic game, I'm looking forward to beating it in a few days. Only thing that I dislike is the poor sound quality at times. Other than that, everything else is amazing.

Update: It now earns a star for being one of the very few games that I've ever played that made me cry. That makes it: The Walking Dead, Life is Strange, The Last of Us, and now Grandia II. One of the best games I've ever played...

It's a good game, but just get ready to pay a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of microtransactions and repeat quests over and over and over again.

Oh, and there's 1,827 quests in the main questline, with about 90% of those being battle quests. 10 minutes per quest will set you at 304.5 hours per playthrough. So yeah, get ready to grind...

I've been following this game for over 7 months, had high hopes, then those hopes were crushed after finding out that there's really not much of a reward to playing the game. It's not like Rust, where you get to build a base, raid others, and get loot. But I'm not going to compare Rust and Scum, I was just giving an example, since these are two separate games.

Scum is a running simulator. It's hard as ♥♥♥♥ to figure out what every little stat means or do. Servers lag like hell. Playing in 4K will make the game too big, and you'll have to enter custom start-up commands for the game on Steam in order to get it to work. FPS drops. You can't climb a ladder if you have a gun equipped, and you don't have a holster for it. Just put it in your damn pocket or waist-strap or something. Lastly, it's just so damn repetitive.

I understand that the developers tried going for realistic mechanics in this game, but honestly, it just turns the game off for me. Was a shame, I am glad that preorder wasn't an option.

Refunded.

The game honestly looks super fun...but I cannot run it, due to the poor optimization for Windows 10...and the compatibility mod doesn't work.

What made this game stood out to me, were the graphics and the primary concept of the game. However, everything else was lacking too much for me.

Wall running is broken, enemies react SUPER quickly...some even kill you in one shot. Too short of a game (I heard that it took about 2-1/2 to 3 hours to beat...and the game took almost a decade to be made).

I never finished the game, but I was progressing so quickly that I stopped and decided to not continue. It wasn't going to get better, and I just could NOT continue at all. Looked interesting, but not the game I would spend $30 on. VERY overpriced.
