Originally this was one of those seemingly "unneeded programs" that I bought on a whim because it was affordably cheap. However, it has proved it's worth and has ended up as one of my "must-haves" on Steam.

It does its job almost seamlessly in the background, even with animated and interactive wallpapers, though that does depend on the wallpaper, settings and computer you're using. It also has settings you can play around with to help out with that too. I have had a couple of moments where it has crashed or has not been able to find Steam (as it has booted up first). However, a quick refresh of the program is easy and has fixed it 100% of the time, and it's uncommon. The customisation is also easy to use and large, plus it is also synced to the Steam Workshop making the choices near-endless. Another thing to note is that the filter system has considered those worried about anime/NSFW wallpapers as there are multiple filters to clear out those if you don't want to see them.

I wholly recommend this. For the price, you're getting an excellent program that many companies would've made you pay tons a month via subscription.

Note: This is my first review, my first time playing any Nexomon game - I wasn't aware there was a prequel - therefore I'm a complete newbie both game/review wise, however it made a new fan in me and made me want to backtrack to it's prequel so I wrote this.

If you love the handheld Pokémon games it is very likely you will enjoy Nexomon: Extinction as game-play wise it has similarities to Pokémon and could almost be called the meme version of Pokémon thanks to it's running commentary of fourth-wall jokes. However the two games are not the same as Nexomon: Extinction stands on it's own feet as a traditional RPG, and does so successfully, but happily flaunts that it was very likely inspired by Pokémon with it's critter catcher base. Instead I'd recommend people to try not to go in expecting it to be exactly the as Pokémon same mechanics wise, but instead to expect it to have similarities and give you some nostalgia - especially difficulty wise - whilst being an entirely different game.

Pros:
✔️ It's a game that is fairly cheap and overall will be smooth running game even for lower spec users like myself. (I do find when I boot up the game and use my first attack against an opponent in a battle it freezes for a short time, but it unfreezes pretty quick and runs perfectly fine after that so it's minor.)
✔️ It's both colourful and visually appealing in all aspects. In particular I like the backgrounds over the Nexomon but the designs of the Nexomon are also well done. (And yes shiny ones are available and are called "cosmic".)
✔️ The main story is fairly large (I completed it in about 30+ hours) and well paced. The world is also a nice size and very explorable as it's a semi open world from the get go.
✔️ All the characters are likeable and I love the silly fourth wall breaking humour. I have laughed at this game several times. However this will very much depends on the player though and will get old for some.
✔️ Alongside your main slot there are 3 extra save slots for multiple playthroughs.
✔️ It's fairly difficult and doesn't hand everything to you on a spoon. Be prepared for some grinding, buying potions, running back to the Nexostop (health centre) and the opponents switching out Nexomon strong against yours.
✔️ Additional side quests are not only there but they don't feel forced into the game for no reason. There's also plenty of them as well which makes the game fairly playable even after finishing.
✔️ All Nexomon, including starters, can be caught in the game and the game certainly makes it feel doable. No DLCs or anything of the sorts are needed.
✔️ Level scaling can be a make or break feature for some, but I personally enjoyed that the Nexomon and Tamers (who you can re-battle anytime) in world got tougher and it increased the difficulty nicely.
✔️ Customisation is pretty good. You can customise your character whenever you want with a nice selection of sprite choices, find a few different Nexomon sprites that can follow you if you wish (and is entirely optional) and use a custom mode once you complete the game to change the game-play entirely.

Cons:
❌ No ability to change the keyboard mapping made it much more awkward for playing on a keyboard as did have odd controls. When I switched to controller I found it far easier for this game in particular.
❌ Whilst I enjoyed them at first and they're not terrible, some of the mechanisms got a bit repetitive for me. The mini game as you catch the Nexomon, the boulder smashing to farm shards and looking for higher percentages when throwing food at the Nexomon are some that just got repetitive after a while.
❌ There was no tutorial about the type and status system so knowing what they did was pretty much a guessing game unless you googled it. An NPC or something explaining what the all types and status system are would've been really helpful for both old and new players.
❌ Exploring is fun but without an on the go in-game map and no route names I found it hard to find/remember places sometimes (warpstones do help but you have to find it first). Maybe my sense of direction is bad though.
❌ There just seemed like a lot of scrolling. Need to buy 50 potions? You're adding all of them 1 at a time. Same goes for things like throwing food at Nexomon and searching for a Nexomon in the Database. I personally think a bulk option and a few shortcuts would help out for some of it.
❌ For those collecting them all there is no feature in the Database telling you where Nexomon was last seen/where to find them or any sort of hint. Right now it's a lot of wandering aimlessly and/or being reliant on online guides.
❌ Move pool was fairly small but it felt even smaller since many of the non attacking moves just don't feel worth the slot they take up because the percentage of them hitting is just so low. Sadly this made the Nexomon kinda feel the same strategy wise for me since they also didn't have any unique abilities, stats and whatnot, then also all had similar move pools.
❌ Minor but no selling items at the store was a shame. It would've been nice to be able to sell those excess Nexotraps I wasn't using for some money.

All in all it very much embraces the fact it is Pokémon like but manages to change up those core features a just tad bit to make them feel different for both new and old players of the critter catcher genre. The game is most certainly not a masterpiece and could use with some things changing up a little, however considering how cheap it is and it's still receiving updates regularly I would most certainly recommend this game for anyone who loves critter catcher and RPG games or wants to play a Pokémon-esque game with a different take.
