I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux! Arch is cool tho.


Head over to the Arch Linux website and grab the ISO. If you can't figure this out, maybe Linux isn't for you.

Use a tool like Rufus or Etcher. If you're asking how to do this, it's time to face the fact that Arch might be out of your league.

Reboot your machine and boot from the USB. If this step confuses you, perhaps stick to your baby distro.

Use fdisk , cfdisk , or another partitioning tool. If this is the part where you start sweating, maybe go back to something simpler.

Format your partitions with mkfs.ext4 or mkfs.fat . Don't forget to set up swap space—though if you're clueless here, just skip it and hope for the best.

Mount your root partition to /mnt . If this sounds like gibberish, maybe reconsider this whole Arch Linux thing.

Run pacstrap /mnt base . If this step is too hard, maybe you're just not cut out for this.

Create your fstab file with genfstab . If this is confusing, maybe stick with a distro that holds your hand.

Chroot into your new system and set up your timezone, locale, and hostname. If you're already lost, Arch isn't for you.

Install GRUB or another bootloader. If you mess this up, enjoy figuring out how to boot into your shiny new brick.

Exit the chroot, unmount everything, and reboot. If it doesn't work, well, welcome to Arch Linux, where the strong survive.

Now you have a bare-bones system. Set up your desktop environment, drivers, and software. If you're overwhelmed, maybe this was like you, a mistake :)
