Like most fighting games, DBFZ is most fun:
(A) When you have friends who want to play with you, OR
(B) If you take the game seriously enough to compete and/or play the online mode.

If you have (A) or (B), go wild & enjoy!
You are probably already a fan of fighting games and you will enjoy what the game has to offer.
There is more than enough depth to keep you and your friends busy.

BUT, If you don't have (A) or (B), then I do not recommend buying this game.

1. The online is horrible.
2. The DLC structure is horrible.
3. The "campaign" and other PvE elements are not worth mentioning.

Although it is relatively easy for beginners to get into this game due to auto-combos, and the graphics/animations are very pleasing to the senses, once you peel back the onion it is just like any other fighting game wherein it is very difficult & frustrating to compete against someone with a skill disparity. You need to dedicate a LOT of time in order to fully appreciate & understand the cast of characters and how they play in battle (outside of tapping Light Attack ad nauseam). If you don't have the time, you will never enjoy the game and you will waste your money.

Yes, this is basically true of virtually any fighting game, but in DBFZ it is especially true. DBFZ is very fast and unforgiving (for better or for worse, depending on the skill disparity). This does not bode well with the online play, which, again, is absolutely horrible. So, unless you and your friend(s) are relatively matched in skill/knowledge, AND you are local, you probably won't play for very long before someone quits out of frustration, helplessness, or boredom.

Once you give up on trying to convince your friends to play, you are then stuck trying to compete online. And, well, like I said, the online is horrible.

It was fun while it lasted but in [current year] you shouldn't subject yourself to this.

Basically an assortment of unique, colorful, & polygonal obstacle courses filled w/ cute lil' monster baddies to take down.

This is one of those games that you want to play the same level over & over again just to optimize your run-time an perfect your aim.

It's challenging enough if you push yourself, yet still accessible to virtually anyone.

It's cute. It's simple. It runs well. It feels good.

While this game is short, it's crafted very well.
The entire aesthetic & theme are always on point.
The narrative is kick ass and the writing is hilarious.
The game never takes itself too seriously.
The gunplay is satisfying, fun, and relatively intuitive.
Totally worth it.

At it's core, the game is most fun when played with friends in local multiplayer. I would say it is a fantastic game for kids, siblings, and playing with your kids.

Its simple mechanics, however, means the experience can become very dull and uninteresting relatively quickly.

If I play for more than 20 minutes at a time I find myself on brain-dead auto-pilot just mashing the attack buttons and spamming strong magic attacks ad nauseum. There is no risk/reward mechanics, there is no real combo system, and the extremely simple tool-kits for each character means execution is simply not rewarding enough to merit long play sessions.

Each of the base 4 starter character technically has different magic abilities, though they are hardly very unique (mostly just visual differences)... so they still all play essentially the same way.

The most engaging part of this game is finding the vast quantity of weapons to collect and compare (each has different nerfs/buffs to your character's stats), along with unlocking some of the more interesting characters along the way.

I would recommend for the reasons I stated at the top, or if you are desperate for another local multiplayer game to try w/ friends, and if you enjoy the side-scrolling "beat 'em up" genre for what it is.

Early Access Review
Even in the very early stages of Early Access, this game delivers where it needs to. The developers have put together a tightly-knit package. It is a fun & addicting gameplay loop with loads of future potential.

I am very excited to see how the game (content & mechanics) develop within the next year or so.

Highly recommend!

A mechanically challenging yet accessible FPS w/ a sufficient core experience that manages to reward the player just by the nature of its gunplay.

The game has no need to constantly "reward" you with distracting rank-up noises, unlockables, superficial challenges, etc... The experience is compelling & rewarding simply due to the inherent challenge of mastering its mechanics.

Hard to learn. Hard to master.

But when you learn... and when you master... it is extremely fulfilling.

No frills. No BS. A solid FPS.
